§277τινὰ ὑποχωλεύοντα ἰδὼν ἐκ τῶν περὶ τὴν ἕδραν φάναι πρὸς αὐτὸν ὅτι ταῦτα ἡσυχία θεραπεύοι.
Seeing someone limping from among those around the seats, I seemed to say to him that rest would cure these things.
ἐπετάχθη καὶ ἔμετος διὰ πολλῶν· καὶ ἦν αὕτη πέμπτη ἀλουσιῶν ἑξῆς.
Vomiting was also prescribed through many dreams, and this was the fifth day of abstinence from bathing in succession.
ἄξιον δὲ καὶ τὸ πάρεργον τῶν ὀνειράτων εἰπεῖν.
It is also worthwhile to relate the by-product of the dreams.
ἐδόκουν γὰρ ὡς ἐπὶ τῇ εἰωθυίᾳ μελέτῃ τῶν λόγων Δημοσθένη τινὰ μεταχειρίζεσθαι καὶ λέγειν δὴ πρὸς τοὺς Ἀθηναίους ὡς ἐκεῖνος ὤν· ὑμεῖς μὲν οὖν διὰ τοῦ κήρυκος ἐρωτᾶτε τίς ἀγορεύειν βούλεται, ἐγὼ δὲ ὑμᾶς ἡδέως ἂν ἐροίμην τίς ὑμῶν βούλεται πράττειν. ἡ κωμῳδία γε τὸ λοιπόν ἐστιν, ἔλεγον δὲ ἀναφέρων εἰς τοὺς Τελμισσέας τοῦ Ἀριστοφάνους ὡς ἐκεῖ λόγῳ τις ἠγωνίζετο, ἔργῳ δὲ οὔ.
For I seemed, as if in my accustomed practice of speeches, to handle some speech of Demosthenes and to speak to the Athenians as if I were he: "You indeed ask through the herald, 'Who wishes to speak?', but I would gladly ask you, 'Who of you wishes to act?'" "The rest is comedy indeed," I said, referring to the Telmissians of Aristophanes, that there someone contended in word, but not in deed.
ἐνάτῃ δὲ ἐδόκουν ὡς ἐν Σμύρνῃ περὶ ἑσπέραν προσιέναι τῷ ἱερῷ τοῦ Ἀσκληπιοῦ τοῦ ἐν τῷ γυμνασίῳ, προσιέναι δὲ μετὰ Ζήνωνος, καὶ εἶναι τὸν νεὼν μείζω τε καὶ ἐπειληφότα τῆς στοᾶς ὅσον ἐστὶ τὸ ἐστρωμένον.
On the ninth, I seemed, as if in Smyrna, to approach the temple of Asclepius in the gymnasium toward evening, and to approach with Zeno, and that the temple was larger and had encompassed the portico as far as the paved area.
ἅμα δὲ καὶ ὡς περὶ προνάου τούτου διενοούμην.
And at the same time, I thought of this as a vestibule.
προσευχομένου δέ μου καὶ ἀνακαλοῦντος τὸν θεὸν ὁ Ζήνων οὐδὲν ἔφη προσηνέστερον, λέγων δὴ καὶ αὐτὸς τὸν θεὸν, καταφυγήν τε καὶ τοιαῦτα ὠνόμαζε.
While I was praying and calling upon the god, Zeno said nothing was more comforting, himself also naming the god, calling him "refuge" and the like.
περιεσκόπουν δὲ, ὡς ἐν τῷ προνάῳ δὴ τούτῳ, ἀνδριάντα ἐμαυτοῦ· καὶ τότε μέν γε ὡς ἐμαυτοῦ ὄντα ἑώρων, πάλιν δὲ ἐδόκει μοι εἶναι αὐτοῦ τοῦ Ἀσκληπιοῦ μέγας τις καὶ καλός.
I was looking around, as if in this very vestibule, for a statue of myself; and at that time indeed I saw it as being of myself, but again it seemed to me to be of Asclepius himself, large and beautiful.
ταῦτα καὶ ὡς ὄναρ μοι φανθέντα αὖθις διηγεῖσθαι πρὸς αὐτὸν τὸν Ζήνωνα· καὶ ἐδόκει σφόδρα ἔντιμον τὸ τοῦ ἀνδριάντος εἶναι.
I related these things again to Zeno himself as having appeared to me as a dream; and the matter of the statue seemed very honorable.
αὖθις δὲ αὖ τὸν ἀνδριάντα ἑώρων, ὡς ἐν τῇ στοᾷ τῇ προμήκει τοῦ γυμνασίου.
And again I saw the statue, as if in the long portico of the gymnasium.
περὶ δὲ βαλανείου τοιάδε ἔδοξα. πρῶτον μὲν ὡς μεταξὺ ἀνατριβόμενος εἰσελθεῖν εἴς τι βαλανεῖον τῶν ἰδιωτικῶν· ἔπειτα φάναι ὡς ἔλαθον ἐμαυτὸν εἰσελθὼν, ἀλούτων ἡμερῶν ἤδη.
Concerning the bath, I dreamed as follows: first, as if in the midst of being massaged, I entered a certain private bath; then I said that I had entered without realizing it, though it was already days without bathing.
ἔπειτα ἐδόκει μοι παραθαρρύνειν Φοῖβος παρὼν, ὥστε καὶ εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ εἰσέβαινον ἀνυπόπτως ἤδη.
Then Phoebus, being present, seemed to encourage me, so that I entered the water without suspicion now.
αὖθις δὲ ἐδόκουν πρὸς αὐτῷ τῷ Ἀσκληπιῷ νεανίσκον τινὰ τῶν γυμναστικῶν ἔτι ἀγένειον περὶ βαλανείων διαλέγεσθαι, τὰ μεγάλα δὴ ἐπαινοῦντα καὶ τοιαύτας τινὰς τὰς ἀπολαύσεις τοῦ βίου τιθέμενον.
Again I seemed to see, near Asclepius himself, a certain youth among those training, still beardless, conversing about baths, praising large ones indeed and placing them among the enjoyments of life.
δείξας οὖν αὐτῷ τὴν §278θάλατταν ἠρόμην εἰ καὶ ἐνταῦθα ἄμεινον λοῦσθαι, ἢ ἐν μικρῷ.
Having shown him the sea, I asked if it was better to bathe there, or in a small place.
ἐν μικρῷ, ἔφη.
"In a small place," he said.
μετὰ δὲ τοῦτο λίμνην τινὰ ἔδειξα καὶ ἠρόμην εἰ καὶ ἐν λίμνῃ τοσαύτῃ κρεῖττον, ἢ ἐν μικρῷ.
After this, I showed him a certain lake and asked if it was better in such a large lake, or in a small place.
συνεχώρει κἀνταῦθα ὅτι αἱρετώτερον τὸ ἐν μικρῷ.
He agreed here too that bathing in a small place was more desirable.
οὐκ ἄρα, ἔφην, πανταχοῦ τό γε μεῖζον αἱρετώτερον, ἀλλʼ ἔστι τις καὶ μικροῦ χάρις. καὶ ἅμα ἐνενόησα πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν ὡς καὶ ἐπιδεικνυμένῳ ποῦ καλὸν εἰπεῖν ὅτι τῶν μὲν ἄλλων ἀνθρώπων αἱ ἡδοναὶ κινδυνεύουσιν ὑῶν τινῶν εἶναι ἡδοναὶ, ἡ δὲ ἐμὴ καθαρῶς ἄρα ἀνθρώπου εἴη, ὅστις σύνειμί τε καὶ χαίρω λόγοις. ἐδόκει δʼ οὖν ταῦτα λέγειν ὁ νεανίσκος περὶ τοῦ βαλανείου τοῦ πρὸς ταῖς πύλαις ταῖς εἰς Ἔφεσον φερούσαις.
"Not therefore," I said, "is the larger more desirable everywhere, but there is a certain grace also in a small thing." And at the same time, I thought to myself how beautiful it would be, when delivering a speech, to say: "The pleasures of other men run the risk of being the pleasures of certain pigs, but mine would be purely of a human being, who associates with and rejoices in words." At any rate, the youth seemed to say these things about the bath by the gates leading to Ephesus.
καὶ τέλος ἔδοξέ μοι χρῆναι ἀποπειραθῆναι—πότε γὰρ δὴ καὶ ἄλλοτε θαρρῆσαι, εἰ μὴ νῦν; —οὕτω δὴ συνθέσθαι εἰς ὥραν ἕκτην ὡς τηνικαῦτα ἀσφαλέστατον ὂν κινεῖσθαι·
And finally, it seemed to me that I must make a trial—for when else indeed would I take courage, if not now? —so indeed to agree on the sixth hour, as it was then safest to move.
ἐπεὶ δὲ ἀφίκετο ἡ ὥρα, αἰτιᾶσθαι Βάσσον ὡς διατρίβοντα.
But when the hour arrived, I dreamed that I blamed Bassus for delaying.
ὁρᾷς, ἔφην, ὡς καὶ δὴ παρέρχεται ἡ σκιά; δεικνὺς τὴν τῶν κιόνων.
"Do you see," I said, "how indeed the shadow is passing by?" pointing to that of the columns.
ἐπορευόμεθά τε, καὶ ὡς ἠνύσαμεν, ἐπιστὰς τῇ δεξαμενῇ τοῦ ψυχροῦ τοῦ ἔξω ἐπειρώμην τοῦ ὕδατος, καί μοι ἔδοξε παρʼ ἐλπίδας οὐ μάλα ψυχρὸν εἶναι, κυανοῦν δὲ καὶ ἡδὺ ἰδεῖν.
And we went, and when we arrived, standing by the cold basin outside, I tried the water, and it seemed to me, contrary to expectation, not very cold, but deep blue and pleasant to look at.
κἀγὼ, καλὸν, ἔφην, οἷα δὴ γνωρίζων τὸ τοῦ ὕδατος ἀγαθόν.
And I said, "Beautiful," as if indeed recognizing the goodness of the water.
ὡς δὲ παρῆλθον εἴσω, πάλιν εὗρον ἕτερον ἐν θερμοτέρῳ οἴκῳ ἀνειμένον μᾶλλον.
When I went inside, I again found another person more relaxed in a warmer room.
καὶ ἅμα ἐγιγνόμην τε ἐν τῷ θερμῷ καὶ ἀπεδυόμην, ἐλουσάμην καὶ μάλα ἡδέως.
And at the same time, I entered the warm bath and undressed, and bathed very pleasantly.
ὀγδόῃ ἔμετος εἰς ἑσπέραν κατὰ ὄναρ καὶ οὗτος.
On the eighth, there was vomiting toward evening, this too according to a dream.
ἑβδόμῃ ἐδόκουν ἐν ὕδασιν εἶναί που θερμοῖς.
On the seventh, I seemed to be somewhere in warm waters.
τυχεῖν οὖν τινας πλησίον ἀνθρώπους ἐγχειρίδια ἔχοντας καὶ ἄλλως οὐκ ἀνυπόπτους.
It happened indeed that some men were nearby holding daggers and otherwise not free from suspicion.
καὶ δῆτα προσελθεῖν μοί τινας αὐτῶν, ὥς τινος προστασίας χρῄζοντας, ἐγκαλεῖσθαι γὰρ ὑπό τινων.
And indeed some of them approached me, as if needing some protection, for they were accused by some people.
ὡς δʼ ἅπαξ περιεσχέθην, ἐν παντὶ εἶναι, οὔτε πιστεύων ἐνδείξασθαί τε οὐκ ἐθέλων ὅτι ἀπιστοίην.
Once I was surrounded, I was in extreme anxiety, neither trusting them nor wishing to show that I distrusted them.
ἰέναι τε δή τινα ὁδὸν καὶ ἐκδέχεσθαι ψαλίδα πάνυ μακρὰν, ἐν ᾗ καὶ σφόδρα δεῖσαι μὴ ἐπιθεῖντό μοι.
And we went along a certain road and awaited a very long vaulted passage, in which I feared exceedingly lest they should attack me.
ὡς δὲ διεξελθεῖν ἀσμένως, φανῆναί τε ἐν τῇ πόλει τῶν Σμυρναίων ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ καὶ σκοπεῖν ὅπως ὡς τάχιστα πολλοί τε ἀθροισθεῖεν καὶ ἐνδειξαίμην τὸ ὄν.
When I passed through gladly, I appeared in the city of Smyrna in the marketplace, and considered how as quickly as possible many might be gathered and I might show the truth.
κἀκ τούτου αὐτός τε λαμπάδα λαμβάνω
And from this, I myself took a torch...
