§275πρόσθεν ἐμαυτοῦ ῥᾴονος ᾐσθόμην.
I felt easier than before.
διήγαγον δὲ περιπάτῳ χρώμενος κατʼ οἰκίαν, καὶ ἅμα παιδιᾷ, οἷα ἑορτῶν οὐσῶν.
And I passed the time by taking walks in the house, and at the same time with some amusement, as it was a festival.
καὶ γὰρ ἡ τοῦ θεοῦ παννυχὶς ἐγκατειλήφει τὴν προτέραν ἑορτὴν, τὴν τοῦ Ποσειδῶνος.
For the all-night festival of the god had followed upon the previous festival, that of Poseidon.
μετὰ δὲ τοῦτο ὄναρ γίγνεται, ἔχον μέν τινα ἔννοιαν λουτροῦ, οὐ μέντοι χωρίς γε ὑπονοίας· ἀλλʼ ἐδόκουν τι καὶ μολυνθῆναι·
After this, a dream occurred, which had some reference to bathing, yet not indeed without apprehension; rather, I seemed to have been defiled in some way.
ὅμως δὲ ἔδοξε λούσασθαι, πάντως δʼ εἰ καὶ τῷ ὄντι τοῦτʼ ἐπεπόνθειν, ὕδατος δεῖν.
Nevertheless, it was decided that I should bathe, since in any case, even if I had actually suffered this, water was necessary.
εὐθύς τε οὖν οὐχ ὡς ἥδιστα ἔσχον ἐν τῷ βαλανείῳ καὶ ἐπειδὴ ἐπανῆλθον, ἐδόκει πάντα πλήρη εἶναι, καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα οἷον ἀσθμαίνοντος ἦν.
Immediately, then, I did not feel at all well in the bathhouse, and when I returned, everything seemed to be full, and my breath was like that of a gasping man.
ὥστε ἐπʼ ἀρχῇ τῆς τροφῆς εὐθὺς ἐπαυσάμην.
So I stopped immediately at the beginning of my meal.
διαφθορὰ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐκ νυκτὸς, καὶ προῆλθεν εἰς τοῦτο, ὥστε μόλις κατέστη πρὸ μεσημβρίας μικρόν.
After this, a bowel trouble started during the night, and it went so far that it barely settled a little before noon.
ὄψις δὲ ὀνείρατος οὑτωσί πως εἶχεν, ὡς ἄρα εἴην ἐν ὕδασι θερμοῖς, προκεκυφὼς δὲ εἰς τὸ πρόσθεν ὁρῴην τὰ κάτω τῆς κοιλίας ἀτοπώτερον διακείμενα.
The vision of the dream was somewhat as follows: that I was in warm waters, and bending forward, I saw my lower abdomen in a rather strange condition.
ἐβουλευσάμην μὲν δὴ μεῖναι ἐπʼ ἀλουσίας.
I resolved indeed to remain without bathing.
ἔφη δέ τις ὡς οὐκ ἐπʼ αὐτοῦ γε τοῦ λουτροῦ τὸ δυσχερὲς ἦν τὸ φαινόμενον, οὐδʼ εἰκὸς ὡς αἴτιον φυλάξασθαι.
But someone said that the trouble that appeared was not due to the bath itself, nor was it reasonable to guard against it as the cause.
ἐλουσάμην τε εἰς ἑσπέραν, καὶ ἅμα τῷ ὄρθρῳ τὸ ἦτρον ἤλγουν, καὶ ἐπεχώρει τὸ ἄλγημα ἐπὶ δεξιᾷ καὶ μέχρι βουβῶνος κάτω.
So I bathed toward evening, and with the dawn I had pain in my abdomen, and the pain spread to the right and down as far as the groin.
ἑβδόμῃ δʼ ἐπὶ δέκα ἀλουσία ἐξ ὀνείρατος, ὀγδόῃ δʼ ἐπὶ δέκα ἀλουσία.
On the seventeenth, there was abstinence from bathing because of a dream, and on the eighteenth, abstinence from bathing.
ἐνάτῃ ἐπὶ δέκα δʼ ἔδοξά τινας τῶν βαρβάρων ἐγκρατεῖς γεγενῆσθαί μου, καί τινα αὐτῶν ἐπιέναι μοι καὶ δόξαν παρασχεῖν ὡς στίξοντα· ἔπειτα καθεῖναι τὸν δάκτυλον οὑτωσὶ μέχρι τοῦ λαιμοῦ, καί τι ἐγχέαι, κατὰ δή τινα ἐπιχώριον νόμον, ὀνομάσαι δὲ αὐτὸ ὀξυσιτίαν· ταῦτα δὲ ὕστερον ὡς ὄναρ διηγεῖσθαι καὶ τοὺς ἀκούοντας θαυμάζειν καὶ λέγειν ὡς ἄρα τοῦτο αἴτιον εἴη τοῦ διψῆν μὲν, μὴ δύνασθαι δὲ πιεῖν, τὸ τρέπεσθαι εἰς ὄξος τὰ σιτία.
On the nineteenth, I dreamed that some barbarians had got me in their power, and that one of them approached me and gave the impression that he was going to brand me; then he let down his finger like this as far as my throat, and poured something in, indeed according to some local custom, and called it "acid indigestion"; and that I afterwards related these things as a dream, and those who heard wondered and said that this was surely the cause of my being thirsty but unable to drink, namely, that the food turned into acid.
ἐκ δὴ τούτου ἔμετός τε ἐδείκνυτο καὶ προσέταξεν ὁ βάρβαρος λουτροῦ τε ἀποσχέσθαι καὶ διάκονον ἕνα παραστήσασθαι.
From this, vomiting was indicated, and the barbarian ordered me to abstain from bathing and to keep one servant at my side.
τὸ τήμερον εἶναι ἀλουσία καὶ ἔμετος μετὰ ῥᾳστώνης, ὡς εἰκάσαι ἐδόκουν ἐν προπυλαίοις εἶναι τοῦ Ἀσκληπιοῦ, καί τινα τῶν ἐπιτηδείων ἐντυχόντα μοι περιβάλλειν καὶ φιλοφρονεῖσθαι, οἷα δὴ διὰ χρόνου ἑορακότα· εἰπεῖν δὴ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὡς ἐν ἀηδίᾳ τε εἴην γεγονὼς §276καὶ προϊόντος τοῦ λόγου μνησθῆναι ὅσα δὴ καὶ περὶ τὸ ἱερὸν τυγχάνοι κεκινημένα.
For today, there was abstinence from bathing and vomiting with relief, and I seemed, as I might conjecture, to be in the propylaea of Asclepius, and that one of my acquaintances met me, embraced me, and welcomed me warmly, as if seeing me after a long time; and that I said to him that I had been in an unpleasant state, and as our conversation went on, I mentioned all the things that happened to have been changed around the temple.
καὶ ἅμα ταῦτα λέγοντες εἰσῄειμεν εἴσω.
And while saying these things, we went inside.
ὡς δὲ ἐγενόμεθα οὗ ἡ ἀγαθὴ τύχη καὶ ὁ ἀγαθὸς δαίμων ἐπιστάντες, ἔτι διελεγόμεθα.
And when we came to where "Good Fortune" and the "Good Daemon" stand, we were still conversing.
καί τινα τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἰδὼν τῶν περὶ τὸ ἱερὸν ἠρόμην ὅπου ὁ ἱερεὺς εἴη.
And seeing one of the attendants around the temple, I asked where the priest was.
ὁ δʼ ἔφη, ἐξόπισθε τοῦ νεώ· καὶ γὰρ εἶναι περὶ λύχνους ἤδη τοὺς ἱεροὺς, τάς τε δὴ κλεῖς ἀνακομίζειν τὸν νεωκόρον· καὶ τυχεῖν ἐν τούτῳ κλεισθὲν τὸ ἱερὸν, οὕτω μέντοι ὥστε καὶ συγκεκλεισμένου εἴσοδόν τέ τινα λείπεσθαι καὶ τὰ ἔνδον ὁρᾶσθαι.
And he said, "Behind the temple; for he is already busy with the sacred lamps, and the temple warden is bringing up the keys." And it happened that at this time the temple was closed, yet in such a way that, even though it was closed, a certain entrance was left and the interior could be seen.
προσῆλθόν τε δὴ ταῖς θύραις καὶ ὁρῶ ἄγαλμα ἕτερον ἀντὶ τοῦ παλαιοῦ κατηφές.
And I went up to the doors and saw another statue, dejected, in place of the old one.
θαυμάζοντι δέ μοι καὶ ζητοῦντι τὸ ἀρχαῖον οὗ εἴη, προσφέρει τις, καὶ οὐδʼ αὐτὸ πάνυ ἔδοξα γνωρίσαι, προσεκύνησα δʼ οὖν σπουδῇ.
And while I was wondering and searching where the ancient one was, someone brought it, and I did not seem to recognize it very well either, but nevertheless I worshipped it with devotion.
μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα περιελθόντες ἐντυγχάνομεν τῷ ἱερεῖ καὶ ἠρχόμην ἐγὼ πρὸς αὐτὸν λόγου τοιοῦδε· ἐμοὶ καὶ ἐν Σμύρνῃ ὀνείρατα ἐγίγνετο διαλεχθῆναί σοι περὶ τοῦ ἱεροῦ, καὶ νομίσας τὸ πρᾶγμα μεῖζον εἶναι ἢ κατʼ ἐμὲ ἐσιώπησα· καὶ νῦν ἔναγχός μοι περὶ αὐτῶν τούτων γεγένηται. καὶ ἅμα ἐν νῷ εἶχον λέγειν περὶ τοῦ τὸ ἕδος εἰς τὴν ἀρχαίαν χώραν καταστῆσαι.
After these things, walking around, we met the priest, and I began a conversation with him as follows: "To me, even in Smyrna, dreams occurred that I should converse with you about the temple, and thinking the matter to be too great for me, I kept silent; and now recently, about these very things, a dream has occurred to me." And at the same time I had in mind to speak about restoring the statue to its ancient place.
περιπατοῦντος δέ μου ἀποπίπτει τὸ διάβαθρον τοῦ ἑτέρου ποδὸς, καὶ ὁ ἱερεὺς ἀνελόμενος προσφέρει.
But as I was walking, the sandal of my other foot fell off, and the priest picked it up and brought it to me.
κἀγὼ τῆς μὲν τιμῆς ἕνεκα ἥσθην, βουλόμενος δὲ αὐτὸν οἷον ἀμείβεσθαι καὶ δεξιοῦσθαι κύψας λαμβάνω.
And I was pleased because of the honor, and wishing to return the favor, as it were, and to greet him, I bent down and took it.
κἀν τούτῳ ταῦρός τις ἐπῄει μοι κατʼ αὐτὰς τὰς ἀκοὰς τοῦ θεοῦ.
And in the meantime a bull came toward me, right at the hearing-place of the god.
κἀγὼ ἐδεδοίκειν τε καί πως ἐπειρώμην φυλάττεσθαι.
And I was afraid and tried somehow to protect myself.
ὁ δʼ ἄλλο μὲν οὐδὲν ἔδρασεν, ὑπὸ δὲ τὸ γόνυ τὸ δεξιὸν ἐνέθλασεν.
But he did nothing else, only struck me violently under my right knee.
ὁ δὲ Θεόδοτος σμίλην τινὰ λαβὼν ἀνεκάθαρεν· ὥστε ἔμελλον πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐρεῖν ὅτι σὺ αὐτὸ ἐποίησας ἕλκος. ταῦτʼ ἦν τὰ φανθέντα καὶ ἐνταῦθα ἔληξεν ὁ φόβος καὶ ἐγένετο ὑπὸ τὸ γόνυ τὸ δεξιὸν ἑλκύδιον ἄνθρακι ἐοικὸς, καὶ ἐδόκει ἀγαθὸν εἶναι πρὸς τὰ ἄνω.
And Theodotus, taking a scalpel, cleaned it out; so that I was about to say to him, "You yourself have made it a wound." These were the things shown, and there the fear ended, and a small ulcer like a carbuncle formed under my right knee, and it seemed to be good for the upper parts.
δεκάτῃ δʼ ὑστέρᾳ ἐδόκουν ἐσθῆτα ἔχειν ἱερέως καὶ αὐτὸν παρόντα ὁρᾶν τὸν ἱερέα· ἐδόκουν δὲ καὶ τῶν ἐπιτηδείων
On the twentieth, I seemed to have the garment of a priest and to see the priest himself present; and I seemed also to see some of my acquaintances...
