§279καὶ πάντες ἐλαμπαδηφόρουν οἱ ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ, καὶ τὸ Εὐριπίδειον τοῦτο ἔλεγον
"Ἥλιε θοαῖς ἵπποισιν εἱλίσσων φλόγα· "
καὶ γὰρ ἅμα ἡλίου ἀνατολῇ ἐδόκουν εἰσελθεῖν.
And everyone in the marketplace was carrying torches, and they were reciting this verse of Euripides: "O Sun, who rollest thy flame with swift steeds;" for indeed, I seemed to enter at the very rising of the sun.
ταῦτα καὶ ὕστερον πρὸς Κοδρᾶτον τὸν ἡγεμόνα ἐδόκουν ὡς ὄναρ διηγεῖσθαι, καὶ τὸν εἰπεῖν, ποίησον οὕτω· καὶ ἡ λαμπὰς ἤρθη.
Later, I seemed to relate these things to Quadratus the governor as a dream, and he seemed to say, "Do so"; and the torch was lifted.
ἕκτῃ ἐδόκουν ἅμα Ἀλεξάνδρῳ τῷ διδασκάλῳ προσιέναι τῷ αὐτοκράτορι, καθέζεσθαι δʼ αὐτὸν ἐπί τινος βήματος.
On the sixth, I seemed, along with Alexander my teacher, to approach the emperor, and he was sitting on a certain tribunal.
προσειπόντος δὲ αὐτὸν τοῦ Ἀλεξάνδρου προτέρου καὶ προσρηθέντος ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ τε καὶ τῶν περὶ αὐτὸν, ἅτε καὶ ἐκ πολλοῦ γνωρίμου καὶ συνήθους ὄντος, μετὰ τοῦτο προσῄειν ἐγώ.
After Alexander had greeted him first and had been greeted in turn by him and those around him, since he was an acquaintance and intimate friend of long standing, after this I approached.
προσειπόντος δὲ κἀμοῦ καὶ στάντος ἐθαύμασεν ὁ αὐτοκράτωρ, ὡς οὐ καὶ αὐτὸς προσελθὼν φιλήσαιμι.
And when I too had greeted him and stood there, the emperor wondered why I did not also go up and kiss him.
κἀγὼ εἶπον ὅτι ὁ θεραπευτὴς εἴην ὁ τοῦ Ἀσκληπιοῦ· τοσοῦτον γάρ μοι ἤρκεσεν εἰπεῖν περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ.
And I said that I was the attendant of Asclepius; for it was enough for me to say this much about myself.
πρὸς οὖν τοῖς ἄλλοις, ἔφην, καὶ τοῦτο ὁ θεός μοι παρήγγειλε μὴ φιλεῖν οὑτωσί· καὶ ὃς, ἀρκεῖ, ἔφη. κἀγὼ ἐσίγησα.
"In addition to other things," I said, "the god commanded me this also, not to kiss in this manner." And he said, "It is enough." And I fell silent.
καὶ ὃς ἔφη, καὶ μὴν θεραπεύειν γε παντὸς κρείττων ὁ Ἀσκληπιός. πέμπτῃ ἐφαίνετο μὲν τὸ ἱερὸν τοῦ Ἀπόλλωνος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὄρει τῷ Μιλύᾳ· ἐδόκει δὲ οἰκήματα ἄττα προσγεγενῆσθαι, καὶ ὄνομα εἶναι τῷ χωρίῳ Ἐλεφαντίνη ἀπὸ Ἐλεφαντίνης τῆς ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ.
And he said, "And indeed, Asclepius is better than anyone at healing." On the fifth, the temple of Apollo on Mount Milyas appeared; and certain buildings seemed to have been added, and the name of the place was Elephantine, after the Elephantine in Egypt.
ἔχαιρον δὴ καὶ κατʼ αὐτὰ τὰ οἰκήματα καὶ κατὰ τὴν οἰκειότητα τοῦ τόπου τῷ τόπῳ· καὶ δὴ καὶ ἱερέα εἶναι τοῦ θεοῦ τὸν τῆς Ἴσιδος τῆς ἐν Σμύρνῃ ἱερέα, παρʼ ᾧπερ καὶ κατάγεσθαι καὶ ἐνθυμεῖσθαι πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν ὅτι πολλά μοι πρὸς αὐτὸν οἰκεῖα ὑπάρχοι ἐκ πολλοῦ· καί τι καὶ τυγχάνειν παρʼ αὐτοῦ πρόσθεν ἐωνημένος, ἔπειτα ὑπόλοιπόν τι ἔχων ἐθέλειν ἀλλάξασθαι.
I rejoiced indeed both in the buildings themselves and in the affinity of the place to that place; and indeed, that the priest of the god was the priest of Isis in Smyrna, with whom indeed I lodged, and I reflected to myself that many close relations had existed between me and him of old; and that I happened to have bought something from him previously, and then having some remainder left, I wished to exchange it.
κἀκ τούτου δὴ ἐδόκουν εἰπεῖν τινὰ κοιφὶ μετὰ οἴνου· λαβεῖν τε δὴ εὐθὺς αὐτὸ ὡς ἴαμα καὶ σκοπεῖν εἴτε τῷ προσώπῳ δέοι προσθέσθαι εἴτε καὶ τοῖς ἐντός.
And after this indeed I seemed to tell someone to give me a certain kuphi with wine; and indeed to take it at once as a remedy and to consider whether it should be applied to the face or to the internal parts.
καί τινος εἰπόντος ὅτι ἐπικάοι ὅπου ἐπιτεθείη, ἐνθυμηθῆναι ὡς ἐπιτηδείως ἔχοι παντὸς μᾶλλον ψύξεως εἶναι φάρμακον.
And when someone said that it would burn wherever it was applied, I reflected how extremely suitable it would be as a remedy for cooling.
καί πως ἐκ τούτων εἰπεῖν πρὸς τὸν ἱερέα §280ὅτι δῆλον ἦν ἐξ ὧν ἀνεγίγνωσκον ὅτι οὐχὶ δεήσοι φαγεῖν.
And somehow from these things I seemed to say to the priest that it was clear from what I was reading that there would be no need to eat.
καὶ δῆτα εὐθὺς εἶχον ἐν νῷ ὡς διατελέσων ἄσιτος τὴν ἡμέραν· ἠσίτησα δή.
And indeed, I immediately had it in mind to go through the day without food; and indeed, I fasted.
ἡ δὲ ἐπιοῦσα ἀλουσίας πάλιν ἦν.
The next day was again one of abstinence from bathing.
τρίτῃ φθίνοντος ἐδόκουν ἐφθαρμένης μοι τῆς τροφῆς συμβουλεύεσθαι περὶ λουτροῦ Ζωσίμῳ τῷ τροφεῖ καὶ ἐρωτᾶν εἰ δέοι πλείω λούσασθαι.
On the third of the waning month, as my food was spoiled, I seemed to consult with Zosimus my foster-father about bathing, and to ask if I should bathe more.
τὸν δὲ οὐ συμφῆσαι.
But he did not agree.
μετὰ δὲ τοῦτο λελοῦσθαί γε καὶ τῆς γαστρὸς φαύλως ἔχειν, καὶ φάναι πρὸς τὸν Ζώσιμον, ἔδει γὰρ ἠσιτηκέναι; καὶ τὸν εἰπεῖν, ἔδει· ἠσίτησα αὖθις.
And after this, having bathed, and being in a bad state in my stomach, I seemed to say to Zosimus, "For was it necessary to have fasted?" and he said, "It was." I fasted again.
καὶ τῆς ἐπιούσης ἤμουν πάλιν εἰς ἑσπέραν.
And on the following day, I vomited again toward evening.
ἦν δὲ τὸ ὄναρ ὡς ὀστοῦ γε ἐγκειμένου καὶ δέον ἐκβαλεῖν, ἔννοια δὲ καὶ αἵματος ἀφαιρέσεως ἀπὸ τῶν σφυρῶν· καὶ ἐποίησα οὕτω καὶ προῆλθον οὐ πολύ.
The dream indeed was as if a bone were lodged inside and must be cast out, and there was also an idea of letting blood from the ankles; and I did so, and walked out a little.
Ληναιῶνος νουμηνίᾳ ἐδόκουν ἐν τῷ Ἀδριανείῳ κεχρῖσθαι μὲν, λελοῦσθαι δʼ οὔ· ὡς δʼ ἐπανελθεῖν, φάναι πρός τινα τῶν φίλων ὅτι οὐ λουσαίμην, ἀλλὰ χρισαίμην· τὸν δὲ, καὶ γὰρ ἐγὼ, φάναι, κέχρισμαι μόνον. ἀλουσία ἡμερῶν ἕξ.
On the first day of the month Lenaeon, I seemed to be anointed in the Hadrianeum, but not to bathe; and when I returned, I seemed to say to one of my friends that I had not bathed, but had anointed myself; and he said, "For indeed, I too have only anointed myself." Abstinence from bathing for six days.
δευτέρᾳ ἐδόκουν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ εἶναι τοῦ Ἀσκληπιοῦ ὄρθριον εὐθὺς ἐξ ὁδοῦ ποθὲν ἥκων, καὶ χαίρειν ὡς ταχέως ἀνεῴγνυτο.
On the second, I seemed to be in the temple of Asclepius at dawn, having just returned from a journey somewhere, and to rejoice that it had opened so quickly.
ἐδόκουν δὲ καὶ τοὺς παῖδας ᾁδειν τὸ ἀρχαῖον ᾆσμα, οὗ ἡ ἀρχή ἐστι
"Δία τὸν πάντων ὕπατον κλῄζω· "
καὶ εἶναι ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ μέρει τοῦ ᾁσματος
"πολὺ γὰρ πολύ μοι τὸ μέσον βιότου
μέλπειν τε θεοὺς ἔν τʼ εὐφροσύναις
ἦτορ ἰαίνειν
τοιῷδʼ ὑπὸ παιδονόμῳ. "
ὥστʼ ἐθαύμαζον ὡς αὐτόματον τὸ ᾆσμα εἰς μέσον ἧκε.
And I seemed to hear the boys singing the ancient song, whose beginning is: "I sing of Zeus, the highest of all;" and it was in that part of the song: "For by far, yes by far the greater part of my life is to sing of the gods and to gladden my heart in festivities under such a director." So that I wondered how the song came forward spontaneously.
πάλιν δὲ ὡς γενεθλίων προσιόντων προπέμπειν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν τοὺς οἰκέτας ἀποκομίζοντας δή τινα καὶ ἅμα γράμματα ἐγγράφειν ἐπʼ αὐτῶν ὧν ἀπεκόμιζον· καὶ φιλοτεχνεῖν ὑπὲρ συμβούλου ἀγαθοῦ ὅπως χορηγήσειεν ὅσων ἔδει τῷ λόγῳ.
And again, as if my birthday were approaching, I seemed to send the servants ahead to the temple, carrying certain things, and at the same time to write letters upon the things they carried; and to employ all my art on behalf of a good adviser, so that he might supply as much as was necessary for the speech.
τρίτῃ λύχνων εἰσφορά τις ἐφαίνετο εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ὑπὸ τοῦ θυρωροῦ κατʼ εὐχὴν ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ καὶ ἐμεῖν ἔδει, ἤμεσα.
On the third, a certain carrying-in of lamps into the temple by the doorkeeper appeared, in accordance with a prayer on my behalf, and it was necessary to vomit; I vomited.
πέμπτῃ θεοῖς ἐδόκουν εὔχεσθαι, τὰ μὲν οἷς εἴωθα κοινῇ, πάλιν δὲ ἰδίᾳ Διὶ καὶ Ἄρει καὶ θεοῖς οἳ Συρίαν ἔχουσι· καὶ παραπλήσια τἀκεῖ τοῖς οἴκοι κατὰ τὴν οἴκησιν ἐφαίνετο.
On the fifth, I seemed to pray to the gods, partly in common with those to whom I was accustomed, and again individually to Zeus and Ares and the gods who possess Syria; and the things there seemed very similar to those at home in terms of dwelling.
καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐγίγνετο ἡ πρόσοδος ἡ
And after this, there took place the procession...
