Lexiphanes "But I will go and get a dry-rub." And we, said Philinus, "I and Onomarchus and Hellanicus here will follow.
For the pointer of the sundial casts its shadow on the middle of the sky, and there is a fear lest we bathe in dirty bath-water, behind the Carimantae, being squeezed tightly together with the rabble." And Hellanicus said, "And I indeed have sore eyes; for my pupils are clouded, and I blink frequently and am on the verge of tears, and my eyes smart, and I need some ophthalmologist, a son of Asclepius, who, having mixed and poured in a drug, will make my eyes lose their redness and be no longer bleary nor see through watery eyes." Lexiphanes Discussing such things, all of us who were present departed.
And when we arrived at the gymnasium, having already stripped, one practiced finger-wrestling, another neck-wrestling and upright wrestling, another, having anointed himself with oil, wrestled, another punched the punching bag, another, holding lead weights in his fists, exercised with weights.
Then, having rubbed down and wrestled on each other's backs and sported in the gymnasium, Philinus and I, having showered in the warm tub, went out; while the others, diving headfirst like dolphins into the cold pool, swam alongside underwater wonderfully.
And returning again, we did various things in different directions.
I, having put on my shoes, scraped my head with a toothed comb; for I had been shorn not in the 'garden' style but in the 'bowl' style, having not long before cut off my youth-lock and crown-hair.
Another ate hot lupines, another vomited on an empty stomach, another, slicing radishes thin, supped up the fish soup, another ate cheap wild figs, and another supped barley-gruel.
Lexiphanes And when it was time, we dined on our elbows; folding chairs and low couches were set.
The dinner was from contributions.
There were prepared many and varied things: pig's trotters, ribs, tripe, the womb of a breeding sow, liver from the frying pan, garlic-sauce, sour sauce, and such kinds of seasonings, honey-cakes, stuffed leaves, and honey-pies.
Of underwater creatures, there were many cartilaginous fish, shellfish, Pontic fish-steaks from the basket, Copaic eels, a domestic bird, a rooster already past its crowing age, and a parasitic fish.
We also had a whole oven-baked sheep, and the thigh of an aged ox.
The loaves of bread, however, were of sifted flour, not bad, and others of the new moon, overdue from the festival, and vegetables, both underground and aboveground.
The wine was not old, but from leather-bags, already dry, but still unfermented.
Lexiphanes Drinking cups of all kinds lay upon the tripod table: the 'forehead-hider' and the ladle of Mentor's workmanship having a safe handle, a gurgler, a long-neck cup, and many earthen ones such as Thericles used to bake, wide-mouthed and others narrow-mouthed, some from Phocaea, some from Cnidus, all of them, however, wind-blown and thin as a membrane.
There were cymbia, shallow bowls, and lettered cups, so that the cupboard was full.
Lexiphanes But the boiling cauldron, overflowing, turned the coals onto our heads.
We drank deep drafts and were already tipsy; then we anointed ourselves with baccaris, and someone wheeled in for us a dancer and a triangular-harpist.
Afterwards, one, having climbed up onto the ceiling-beam, was looking for dessert; another was playing the 'lykinda' game, while another twisted his loins with laughter.
