§1#2Ἀγχίνοια εὐφυία ψυχῆς, καθʼ ἣν ὁ ἔχων στοχαστικός ἐστιν ἑκάστῳ τοῦ δέοντος· ὀξύτης νοῦ.
Shrewdness: a good natural ability of the soul, by which the possessor is skilled in hitting upon what is appropriate in each case; sharpness of mind.
Χρηστότης ἤθους ἀπλαστία μετʼ εὐλογιστίας· ἤθους σπουδαιότης.
Kindness of character: simplicity with good reasoning; excellence of character.
Καλοκαγαθία ἕξις προαιρετικὴ τῶν βελτίστων.
Nobility: a state choosing the best things.
Μεγαλοψυχία χρῆσις τοῖς συμβαίνουσιν ἀστεία· μεγαλοπρέπεια ψυχῆς μετὰ λόγου.
Magnanimity: an excellent use of occurrences; magnificence of soul combined with reason.
Φιλανθρωπία ἕξις εὐάγωγος ἤθους πρὸς ἀνθρώπου φιλίαν· ἕξις εὐεργετικὴ ἀνθρώπων· χάριτος σχέσις· μνήμη μετʼ εὐεργεσίας.
Philanthropy: a state of character easily led to friendship with humans; a state beneficial to humans; the state of being thankful; memory combined with beneficence.
Εὐσέβεια δικαιοσύνη περὶ θεούς· δύναμις θεραπευτικὴ θεῶν ἑκούσιος· περὶ θεῶν τιμῆς ὑπόληψις ὀρθή· ἐπιστήμη τῆς περὶ θεῶν τιμῆς.
Piety: justice toward gods; a voluntary power serving gods; a right estimation of the honor due to gods; knowledge of the honor due to gods.
Ἀγαθὸν τὸ αὑτοῦ ἕνεκεν.
The good: that which is for its own sake.
Ἀφοβία ἕξις καθʼ ἣν ἀνέμπτωτοί ἐσμεν εἰς φόβους.
Fearlessness: a state by which we are not liable to fall into fears.
Ἀπάθεια ἕξις καθʼ ἣν ἀνέμπτωτοί ἐσμεν εἰς πάθη.
Apathy: a state by which we are not liable to fall into passions.
Εἰρήνη ἡσυχία ἐπʼ ἔχθρας πολεμικάς.
Peace: quietness in wartime enmities.
Ῥᾳθυμία ῥᾳστώνη ψυχῆς· ἀπάθεια τοῦ θυμοειδοῦς.
Easygoingness: ease of the soul; apathy of the spirited part.
Δεινότης διάθεσις καθʼ ἣν ὁ ἔχων στοχαστικός ἐστιν τοῦ ἰδίου τέλους.
Cleverness: a disposition by which the possessor is skilled in hitting upon his own end.
Φιλία ὁμόνοια ὑπὲρ καλῶν καὶ δικαίων· προαίρεσις βίου τοῦ αὐτοῦ· ὁμοδοξία περὶ προαιρέσεως καὶ πράξεως· ὁμόνοια περὶ βίον· κοινωνία μετʼ εὐνοίας· κοινωνία τοῦ εὖ ποιῆσαι καὶ παθεῖν.
Friendship: agreement concerning noble and just things; choice of the same life; similarity of opinion about choice and action; agreement about life; community with goodwill; community of doing and receiving good.
Εὐγένεια ἀρετὴ εὐγενοῦς ἤθους· εὐαγωγία ψυχῆς πρὸς λόγους ἢ πράξεις.
Nobility of birth: virtue of a noble character; tractability of the soul toward arguments or actions.
Αἵρεσις δοκιμασία ὀρθή.
Choice: right testing.
Εὔνοια [αἵρεσις] ἀνθρώπου πρὸς ἄνθρωπον ἀσπασμός.
Goodwill: [choice-based] greeting of a human toward a human.
Οἰκειότης ταὐτοῦ γένους κοινωνία.
Intimacy: community of the same race.
Ὁμόνοια κοινωνία τῶν ὄντων ἁπάντων· συμφωνία νοημάτων καὶ ὑπολημμάτων.
Agreement: community of all things that exist; harmony of thoughts and opinions.
Ἀγάπησις ἀπόδεξις παντελής.
Lovingness: complete acceptance.
Πολιτικὴ ἐπιστήμη καλῶν καὶ συμφερόντων· ἐπιστήμη ποιητικὴ δικαιοσύνης ἐν πόλει.
Political science: knowledge of noble and advantageous things; knowledge productive of justice in a city.
Ἑταιρία φιλία κατὰ συνήθειαν ἐν τοῖς καθʼ ἡλικίαν γεγενημένοις.
Companionship: friendship through familiarity among those of the same age.
Εὐβουλία ἀρετὴ λογισμοῦ σύμφυτος.
Good counsel: an inborn virtue of reasoning.
Πίστις ὑπόληψις ὀρθὴ τοῦ οὕτως ἔχειν ὡς αὐτῷ φαίνεται· βεβαιότης ἤθους.
Faith: a right estimation of things being as they appear to oneself; stability of character.
Ἀλήθεια ἕξις ἐν καταφάσει καὶ ἀποφάσει· ἐπιστήμη ἀληθῶν.
Truth: a state in affirmation and negation; knowledge of true things.
Βούλησις ἕφεσις μετὰ λόγου ὀρθοῦ· ὄρεξις εὔλογος· ὄρεξις μετὰ λόγου κατὰ φύσιν.
Will: aspiration with right reason; reasonable desire; desire with reason according to nature.
Συμβούλευσις παραίνεσις ἑτέρῳ ὑπὲρ πράξεως, τίνα δεῖ τρόπον πράττειν.
Advising: exhortation to another concerning action, in what manner one ought to act.
Εὐκαιρία χρόνου ἐπίτευξις, ἐν ᾧ χρὴ παθεῖν τι ἢ ποιῆσαι.
Opportunity: hitting upon the time in which one ought to suffer or do something.
Εὐλάβεια φυλακὴ κακοῦ· ἐπιμέλεια φυλακῆς.
Caution: guarding against evil; care in guarding.
Τάξις ἐργασίας ὁμοιότης τῶν πρὸς ἄλληλα πάντων ὄντων· συμμετρία κοινωνίας· αἰτία τῶν πρὸς ἄλληλα πάντων ὄντων συμμετρίας [πρὸς τὸ μαθεῖν].
Order: similarity of work among all things that relate to one another; symmetry of community; cause of the symmetry of all things that relate to one another [toward learning].
Πρόσεξις συντονία ψυχῆς πρὸς τὸ καταμαθεῖν.
Attention: tension of the soul toward learning thoroughly.
Εὐφυία τάχος μαθήσεως· γέννησις φυτῶν ἀγαθή· ἀρετὴ ἐν φύσει.
Good natural ability: quickness of learning; good growth of plants; virtue in nature.
Εὐμάθεια εὐφυία ψυχῆς πρὸς τάχος μαθήσεως.
Readiness to learn: good natural ability of the soul toward quickness of learning.
Νόμος ἀπόφασις κυρία περὶ ἀμφισβητουμένου πράγματος.
Law: a decisive judgment on a disputed matter.
Δίκη ἀμφισβήτησις περὶ τοῦ ἀδικεῖν ἣ μή.
Lawsuit: dispute about doing wrong or not.

Good order of law: obedience to excellent laws.
Εὐφροσύνη ἐπὶ τοῖς τοῦ σώφρονος ἔργοις χαρά.
Cheerfulness: joy over the deeds of a temperate person.
Τιμὴ δόσις ἀγαθῶν ἐν ταῖς διʼ ἀρετὴν πράξεσιν διδομένων· ἀξίωμα ἀπʼ ἀρετῆς· σχῆμα σεμνότητος· τήρησις ἀξιώματος.
Honor: a giving of goods bestowed on deeds due to virtue; value from virtue; form of dignity; preservation of value.
Προθυμία ἐμφανισμὸς προαιρέσεως πρακτικῆς.
Zeal: manifestation of a practical choice.
Χάρις εὐεργεσία ἑκούσιος· ἀπόδοσις ἀγαθοῦ ὑπουργίας ἐν καιρῷ.
Favor: voluntary beneficence; a return of a good service in season.
Ὁμόνοια ὁμοδοξία ἀρχόντων καὶ ἀρχομένων ὡς δεῖ ἄρχειν καὶ ἄρχεσθαι.
Agreement: similarity of opinion of rulers and ruled as to how they ought to rule and be ruled.
Πολιτεία κοινωνία πλήθους ἀνθρώπων αὐτάρκης πρὸς εὐδαιμονίαν· κοινωνία πλήθους ἔννομος.
Constitution: a community of a multitude of humans self-sufficient for happiness; a lawful community of a multitude.

Season: pinnacle of time toward what is advantageous; time cooperating in some good.
Μνήμη διάθεσις ψυχῆς φυλακτικὴ τῆς ἐν αὐτῇ ὑπαρχούσης ἀληθείας.
Memory: a disposition of the soul safeguarding the truth existing in it.

Thinking: tension of the mind.
Νόησις ἀρχὴ ἐπιστήμης.
Understanding: beginning of knowledge.
Ἁγνεία εὐλάβεια τῶν πρὸς τοὺς θεοὺς ἁμαρτημάτων· τῆς θεοῦ τιμῆς κατὰ φύσιν θεραπεία.
Purity: caution against offenses toward gods; service of the honor of God according to nature.
Μαντεία ἐπιστήμη προδηλωτικὴ πράξεως ἄνευ ἀποδείξεως.
Oracle: knowledge revealing action beforehand without proof.
Μαντικὴ ἐπιστήμη θεωρητικὴ τοῦ ὄντος καὶ μέλλοντος ζῴῳ θνητῷ.
Divination: knowledge contemplative of what is and what is to be for a mortal living being.
Σοφία ἐπιστήμη ἀνυπόθετος· ἐπιστήμη τῶν ἀεὶ ὄντων· ἐπιστήμη θεωρητικὴ τῆς τῶν ὄντων αἰτίας.
Wisdom: unhypothetical knowledge; knowledge of things always existing; knowledge contemplative of the cause of existing things.
Φιλοσοφία τῆς τῶν ὄντων ἀεὶ ἐπιστήμης ὄρεξις· ἕξις θεωρητικὴ τοῦ ἀληθοῦς, πῶς ἀληθές· ἐπιμέλεια ψυχῆς μετὰ λόγου ὀρθοῦ.
Philosophy: aspiration for the knowledge of things always existing; a contemplative state of the truth, how it is true; care of the soul with right reason.
Ἐπιστήμη ὑπόληψις ψυχῆς ἀμετάπτωτος ὑπὸ λόγου· δύναμις ὑποληπτική τινος ἢ τινῶν ἀμετάπτωτος ὑπὸ λόγου· λόγος ἀληθὴς ἐπὶ διανοίᾳ ἀμετάπτωτος.
Knowledge: an estimation of the soul unchangeable by argument; a power of estimating some thing or things unchangeable by argument; true reason in the mind unchangeable.
Δόξα ὑπόληψις μεταπειστὸς ὑπὸ λόγου· λογιστικὴ φορά· διάνοια ἐμπίπτουσα εἰς ψεῦδος καὶ ἀληθὲς ὑπὸ λόγου.
Opinion: an estimation alterable by argument; rational movement; thought falling into falsehood and truth by argument.
Αἴσθησις ψυχῆς φορά· νοῦ κίνησις· ψυχῆς διὰ σώματος εἰσάγγελσις εἰς ὥρος ἀνθρώπων, ἀφʼ ἦς γίγνεται ψυχῆς ἄλογος δύναμις γνωριστικὴ διὰ σώματος.
Sensation: movement of the soul; motion of the mind; announcement of the soul through the body to the boundary of humans, from which arises the irrational, cognitive power of the soul through the body.
Ἕξις διάθεσις ψυχῆς καθʼ ἣν ποιοί τινες λεγόμεθα.
State: a disposition of the soul by which we are said to be of a certain kind.
Φωνὴ ῥεῦμα διὰ στόματος ἀπὸ διανοίας.
Voice: a stream through the mouth from the mind.
Λόγος φωνὴ ἐγγράμματος, φραστικὴ ἑκάστου τῶν ὄντων· διάλεκτος συνθετὴ ἐξ ὀνομάτων καὶ ῥημάτων ἄνευ μέλους.
Speech: articulate voice, expressive of each existing thing; speech combined of names and verbs without melody.
Ὄνομα διάλεκτος ἀσύνθετος ἑρμηνευτικὴ τοῦ τε κατὰ τῆς οὐσίας κατηγορουμένου καὶ παντὸς τοῦ μὴ καθʼ ἑαυτοῦ λεγομένου.
Name: uncombined speech, interpretive both of what is predicated of substance and of everything not said of itself.
