Ὥρη δὲ ἐαρινὴ ἀρίστη κυήσιος·
Springtime is best for conception.
ὁ δὲ ἀνὴρ μὴ μεθυσκέσθω, μηδὲ οἶνον λευκὸν πινέτω, ἀλλ’ ὅστις ἰσχυρότατος καὶ ἀκρητέστατος· καὶ σιτία ὡς ἰσχυρότατα· καὶ μὴ θερμολουτείτω· ἰσχυέτω δὲ καὶ ὑγιαινέτω· καὶ σιτίων ἀπεχέσθω τῶν μὴ ξυμφερόντων τῷ πρήγματι.
Let the husband not get drunk, nor let him drink white wine, but whichever is strongest and most unmixed; and food as strong as possible; and let him not take warm baths; let him be strong and healthy; and let him abstain from foods that are not beneficial to the matter.

31.
Ὅταν βούληται ἄρσεν φυτεύειν, τῶν ἐπιμηνίων ἀποληγόντων ἢ ἐκλελοιπότων μίγνυσθαι· καὶ ὠθέειν ὡς μάλιστα ἕως ἂν ἐκμιαίνηται·
When he wants to beget a male, let them couple when the menses are ceasing or have ceased; and to push as much as possible until he ejaculates.
ὅταν δὲ θῆλυ βούληται γενέσθαι, ὅταν πλεῖστα ἐπιμήνια ἔῃ τῇ γυναικὶ, καὶ ἔτι δ’ ἐόντων, τὸν δὲ ὄρχιν τὸν δεξιὸν ἀποδῆσαι ὡς ἂν μάλιστα καὶ ἀνέχεσθαι δύνηται·
But when he wants a female to be born, let them couple when the woman has the most menses, and while they are still going on, and to tie up the right testicle as much as he can bear.
ἐπὴν δὲ ἄρσεν βούληται φυτεύειν, τὸν ἀριστερὸν ἀποδῆσαι.
But when he wants to beget a male, to tie up the left one.

Στόμαχος μήτρης ἀπὸ μὲν θυμιημάτων ξυμμεμυκὼς ἀναχάσκει· ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν μαλθακτηρίων μαλθάσσεται.
The mouth of the womb, being closed, opens from fumigations, and from softening remedies is softened.
Θυμιῇν δὲ λωτοῦ φλοιὸν, σπέρμα δάφνης καὶ φύλλα χλωρὰ κεκομμένα, λιβανωτὸν, σμύρναν, ἀρτερμισίης καρπὸν ἢ φύλλα· καὶ ἄννησον κόψας ἢ στέαρ καὶ κηρὸν καὶ θεῖον καὶ κυπαρίσσου σπέρμα, πευκεδάνου ῥίζαν, μυρσίνης φύλλα χλωρὰ κεκομμένα, κάστορος ὄρχιν, ὀνίδας ἄρσενος ὄνου, σκόροδα, στύρακα, ὑὸς στέαρ·
And one must fumigate with the bark of lotus, seed of laurel and its fresh leaves chopped, frankincense, myrrh, seed or leaves of mugwort; and having pounded anise, or fat, wax, sulfur, cypress seed, peucedanum root, fresh leaves of myrtle chopped, castoreum, dung of a male donkey, garlic, storax, pig's fat.
κἂν ἀπεστραμμένον ᾖ τὸ στόμα, τουτέοισι θυμιῇν· ἀναχάσκει μὲν οὖν οὕτως καὶ στρέφεται.
And even if the mouth is turned away, fumigate with these; for thus it opens and turns back.
Μαλθάσσειν δὲ ἀπὸ τουτέων τὸ στόμα τῆς μήτρης· σανδαράκην, στέαρ αἶγὸς, ὀπὸν συκέης, ὀπὸν σιλφίου, κυκλαμίνου χυλὸν, θαψίην, ὀπὸν τιθυμάλου, καρδάμου καρπὸν, ποίην ἣ καλεῖται πέπλος, κάστορος ὄρχιν, λίνου καρπὸν, λίτρον, ἄρου ῥίζαν, σταφίδα ἀγρίην, καλαμίνθης φύλλα χλωρὰ, στρουθίου καρπὸν, σκίλλης τὸ ἐκ τοῦ μέσου.
And to soften the mouth of the womb with these: realgar, goat's fat, fig juice, silphium juice, cyclamen juice, thapsia, spurge juice, cardamum seed, the herb called peplos, castoreum, linseed, soda, arum root, wild raisin, fresh leaves of calamint, soapwort seed, the middle of squill.

Φάρμακα μαλθακτήρια, καὶ πρὸς τὸ ἰσχυρὴν κάθαρσιν γενέσθαι ἀνακινῆσαι· θαψίης ῥίζαν, μυελὸν βοὸς, χήνειον στέαρ, ῥόδινον·
Softening remedies, and to stimulate a strong purification: thapsia root, ox marrow, goose fat, rose oil.
ταῦτα τρίψασα καὶ ἀναζέσασα πρόστιθέσθω ἡμέρας τέσσαρας· καὶ πινέτω πράσου χυλὸν, καὶ οἶνον γλυκὺν λευκόν· καὶ ῥητίνην, καὶ ἔλαιον χλιερὸν, καὶ κύμινον, λίτρον, μέλι ἐν ῥυπαρῷ εἰρίῳ χρήσθω ἡμέρας τέσσαρας, πίνουσα σελίνου καρπὸν, καὶ λιβανωτοῦ πυρίνας πέντε, καὶ κύμινον αἰθιοπικὸν ἐν οἴνῳ λευκῷ ἀκρήτῳ γλυκεῖ καὶ λουέσθω δὶς τῆς ἡμέρῆς.
Having ground and boiled these, let her apply them for four days; and let her drink leek juice, and sweet white wine; and let her use resin, warm oil, cumin, soda, honey in dirty wool for four days, drinking celery seed, and five grains of frankincense, and Ethiopian cumin in unmixed sweet white wine, and let her bathe twice a day.
Σμύρνα, λίβανος, βοὸς χολὴ, ῥητίνη τερεβινθίνη ἢ νέτωπον τουτέων ἴσον ἑκάστου μίξασα προστιθέσθω ἐν εἰρίῳ καθαρῷ ἢ ῥάκει λεπτῷ βάψασα δὲ τὸ ῥάκος ἐν μύρῳ λευκῷ αἰγυπτίῳ εὐώδεὶ καὶ ἀποδήσασα λίνῳ, λουσαμένη, προστιθέσθω.
Myrrh, frankincense, ox gall, terebinth resin or netopon, having mixed equal parts of these, let her apply in clean wool or thin rag; and having dipped the rag in sweet-smelling white Egyptian perfume and tied it with linen thread, having bathed, let her apply it.
Καὶ πώλυπον φλάσασα ἐσθιέτω, καὶ πινέτω σελίνου καρπὸν καὶ ἀσπαράγου, καὶ οἷνον λευκὸν τρὶς τῆς ἡμέρης νῆστις ἐοῦσα.
And having crushed octopus, let her eat it, and let her drink celery seed and asparagus seed, and white wine three times a day, being fasting.
Σμύρνα; κασίη, λιβανωτος, κιννάμωμον, νέτωπον· τουτέων ἑκάστου ἴσον· ἐν εἰρίῳ ἢ βαλάνους ποιέουσα προστιθέσθω.
Myrrh, cassia, frankincense, cinnamon, netopon, of each of these an equal part, in wool or making into pessaries, let her apply.
Ἄλλο κολοκύνθης ἀγρίης τὸ ἔνδον; κύμινον πεφρυγμένον, ἅνήθου καρπὸν, κυπαρίσσου ῥίζαν, ταῦτα τρίψας λεῖα, μέλὶτι ἑφθῷ φυρήσας, βαλάνους ποιέων, δίδου προστιθέναι· καὶ πινέτω γλυκυσίδης ῥίζαν, σελίνου καρπὸν; ὀπὸν σιλφίου, οἶνον.
Another: the inside of wild colocynth, roasted cumin, dill seed, cypress root, having ground these smooth, mixed with boiled honey, making into pessaries, give to apply; and let her drink peony root, celery seed, silphium juice, wine.
Τὸ βόλβιον δὲ καὶ αὐτὸ καθαίρει προστιθέμενον.
The wild onion itself also purifies when applied.
Καὶ σμύρναν πρώτην, ἄνθος ὀλίγον ἐν οἴνῳ λευκῷ εὐώδει προστίθει.
And first apply myrrh, and a little copper flower in sweet-smelling white wine.
Φάρμᾶκα προσθετὰ εἰς τὸ μήτρην καθῆραι ἐπιτηδειότατα· λαβὼν ἄνθος χαλκοῦ καὶ λίτρου τρίτον μέρος, μέλιτι ἑφθῷ φυρήσας, βαλάνους ποιῆσαι, ὁκόσαὶ ἂν δοκέωσι μέτριαι εἶναι μέγεθος καὶ πάχος, οὕτω προστίθει πρὸς τὸ στόμα τῆς μήτρης· ἢν δὲ βούλῃ ἰσχυρότερον εἶναι, ἐλατήριον πᾶραμῖξαι καὶ τὸ ἄνθος μοῦνον, καὶ οὕτω ποιέων δίδου προστίθεσθαι· καὶ κράδης παραμιγνύναι φλοιον ξύων καὶ τρίβων λεῖον, ὅταν τὸ στόμα δοκέῃ ξηρότερον εἶναι τῆς μήτρης, τὸ ἥμισυ ὡσαύτως.
Pessaries most suitable for purifying the womb: having taken copper flower and a third part of soda, having mixed with boiled honey, make pessaries of such size and thickness as seem moderate, and thus apply to the mouth of the womb; and if you want it to be stronger, mix in elaterium and the copper flower alone, and making it so, give to apply; and also mix in the bark of the fig tree, scraping and grinding it smooth, when the mouth of the womb seems to be drier, half in like manner.
Ἄλλο· τρίψας ἐλατήριον καὶ ἄνθος χαλκοῦ λεῖα, δύο μοίρας ἄνθους, ἐλατηρίου δὲ μίαν, ταῦτα δίεσθαι· κυκλαμίνου τρίψας, ταύτῃ ἀναμῖξαι, ὅκως ἂν δοκέῃ καιρὸς εἶναι· καὶ ποιησαμένην προσθετὰ προστίθεσθαι ἐν εἰρίῳ.
Another: having ground elaterium and copper flower smooth, two parts of copper flower, and one of elaterium, dissolve these; having ground cyclamen, mix with this, as the opportunity seems to be; and having made pessaries, let her apply in wool.
Προσθετὸν λευκὰ καθαῖρον· ἀρτεμισίην τὴν ποίην, λίτρον, κυκλάμινον ἡμίξηρον, κύμινον.
Pessary purifying white discharges: the herb mugwort, soda, half-dried cyclamen, cumin.
Ἕτερον, τὰ αὐτὰ καθαίρει· ἀρτεμισίην ποίην χλωρὴν τρίψας καὶ σμύρνης τρίτον μέρος, οἴνου ἀναμίξας εὐώδεος, εἰρίῳ λευκῷ περιελίξας αὐτὸ, ἐν οἴνῳ τε βρέξας, δὸς προστίθεσθαι.
Another, which purifies the same: having ground green mugwort herb and a third part of myrrh, having mixed with sweet-smelling wine, having wrapped it in white wool, and having soaked it in wine, give to apply.
Ὅταν δὲ χαλῶσιν αἱ μῆτραι, λίτρον, σικύης ἐντεριώνην, κυκλάμινον ἡμίξηρον ἐν εἰρίῳ προστίθει.
And when the womb is relaxed, apply soda, the inside of a bottle-gourd, half-dried cyclamen in wool.
Προσθετὰ παντοῖα καθαίρειν δυνάμενα· σταφίδα ἀγρίην τρίψας χλωρὴν, περιπλάσας, ἀρτεμισίης ποίης τρίψας τὰ φύλλα, ἐν μέλιτι ἑφθῷ πλάσας, καὶ ξηρήνας ἐν σκιῇ, ἀπὸ τουτέου ποιέει προσθετὰ, καὶ δίδου τῇ γυναικὶ προστίθεσθαι.
Pessaries of all kinds capable of purifying: having ground green wild raisin, molding it around, having ground the leaves of mugwort herb, molding them in boiled honey, and having dried them in the shade, from this make pessaries, and give to the woman to apply.
Ἄλλο· ἄνθος μιγνὺς χαλκοῦ ἢ στυπτηρίην αἰγυπτίην, διεὶς τῇ κυκλαμίνῳ, ὥσπερ τὰ πρότερα ἐν μέλιτι ἑφθῷ πλάσας, ἠ ἐν ἰσχάδι ποιήσας, καὶ σμύρνην ὀλίγην.
Another: mixing copper flower or Egyptian alum, dissolving in cyclamen, molding in boiled honey as before, or putting in a dried fig, and a little myrrh.
Ἄλλο· τὴν κυκλάμινον τρίψας, λευκῷ οἴνῳ εὐώδει παραμίξας, ἐν ῥάκει δήσας ὡς λεπτοτάτῳ καθαρῷ, δίδου προστίθεσθαι.
Another: having ground cyclamen, having mixed with sweet-smelling white wine, having tied in a very thin clean rag, give to apply.
Ἄλλο· κυκλάμινον ἡμίξηρον, λίτρον, κανθαρίδας, στέαρ, σανδαράκην.
Another: half-dried cyclamen, soda, cantharides, fat, realgar.
