§2323.
23.
One must know that, of those who suffer from headache from exercise, running, journeys, hunting, or any other unseasonable labor, or from sexual intercourse; those who are pale, those who are hoarse, those with diseased spleens, those who are anemic, those who are flatulent, those who have dry coughs and are thirsty, those who are bloated, those who have obstructions of the veins, those with tension in the hypochondria, flanks, and upper back, those who are numb, those with dim vision, those who have ringing in their ears, those who let urine pass uncontrollably through the urethra, those who are jaundiced, those whose bellies discharge undigested matter, and those who bleed copiously from the nose or anus, if they are in a state of flatulence, or if severe pain runs through them and they cannot overcome it—none of such persons should be treated with medicine; for it will bring danger, and you will do no good, and you will take away spontaneous recoveries and crises.
If it is beneficial to draw blood from someone, first make their belly firm, and in this way draw blood, and starve them, and withhold wine from them; then [treat] the remainder of their symptoms with the appropriate diet, and treat them with moist vapor baths.
If the belly seems to you to be too constipated, give a light enema with a mild preparation.
§2525.
25.
If it seems appropriate to use medicine, purge safely upward with hellebore; but downward with none of such remedies.
It is best to direct them to urination, sweats, and walks; and use gentle friction, so that you do not condense the bodily state too much; but if he is bedridden, let others rub him; and if the affection causes pain in the chest, above the diaphragm, make him sit up as often as possible, and let them recline as little as possible as long as they are able, and rub him for a long time with much warm oil while he is sitting; but if the pains are in the lower belly, below the diaphragm, it is beneficial to lie down and make no movement; to such a body nothing should be administered except friction.
What is released from the lower belly through urine and sweats, if it flows moderately, is resolved in minor cases by spontaneous action; but violent symptoms are bad; for such patients either perish, or do not become healthy without other evils, but the disease fixes itself or similar things happen.
§2626.
26.
A drink for a dropsical patient: three blister-beetles, having removed the head, feet, and wings of each; after crushing their bodies in three cyathi of water, when the one who drank feels pain, let him be moistened with warm water, having previously anointed himself, and let him drink it fasting; and let him eat warm bread made with fat.
§2727.
27.
A styptic: apply fig juice on wool internally to the vein, or roll up rennet and insert it into the nostril, or sprinkle chalcitis on your finger and press, and squeeze the cartilages from the outside on both sides; and loosen the belly with boiled donkey's milk, and shave the head and apply cooling remedies, if it occurs in a hot season.
§2828.
28.
Sesamoides purges upward; the dose is one and a half drachms crushed in oxymel; and it is also mixed with hellebore, and a third part of the dose makes it less choking.
