§1919.
19.
In dry cholera, the belly is inflated with gas, and rumblings are inside, and there is pain in the flanks and loins, and nothing passes downward, but it is completely closed up.
Watch over such a patient so that he does not vomit, but rather that his belly is moved downward.
Therefore, give an enema as quickly as possible with something warm and as fatty as possible, and, anointing him with as much oil as possible, lower him into warm water, laying him down in a tub, and pour in the warm water little by little; and if, while he is being warmed, his belly is moved downward, the disease is resolved.
It is also beneficial for such a person to sleep on top of it, and to drink light, old, and more unmixed wine; and give him olive oil, so that his belly may be moved downward gently, and it is resolved.
Let him abstain from foods and other things.
If the pain does not remit, give him donkey's milk to drink until he is purged. On the other hand, if the belly is loose, and bile passes downward, and there are cramps, vomiting, choking, and gnawing pains, for these it is best to remain quiet; and let them drink hydromel, and not vomit it up.
§2020.
20.
There are two kinds of dropsy, of which the one under the skin, when it begins to develop, is incurable; the other, accompanied by wind, requires much good fortune.
Most of all, physical exertion, vapor baths, and self-control are needed.
Let him eat dry and acrid foods; for in this way he will be most diuretic and have the greatest strength.
If he is short of breath, and the season happens to be summer, and his age is in its prime, and he has strength, draw blood from his arm; then let him eat warm bread dipping it in black wine and olive oil.
And drinking as little as possible, let him exert himself as much as possible, and eat boiled fleshy pig's meat with vinegar, so that he may hold out against uphill walks.
§2121.
21.
For those who have their lower bellies hot, and acrid and irregular excretions pass through them because of melting of the tissues, if they have the strength, draw it back in the opposite direction with hellebore; but if not, give them thick, cold gruel of new season's wheat, lentil soup, bread baked in the ashes, and fish, boiled if they are feverish, but roasted if they are without fever, and black wine for those without fever; but if not, water from medlars, or myrtle-berries, or apples, or service-berries, or dates, or wild vine blossoms.
If fever does not hold him, and there are cramps, give him warm donkey's milk a little at first, then gradually more, and flaxseed, and wheat groats, and having removed the bitter parts of Egyptian beans, grind them, and let him drink it sprinkled over; and let him eat semi-solid roasted eggs, and semolina, and millet, and coarse barley-meal boiled in milk, eating them boiled and cold; and let him take drinks and foods similar to these.
§2222.
22.
In the art of dietetics, it is of the greatest importance to observe and watch over, in long illnesses, both the exacerbations and the remissions of fevers, so that the proper times when one must not administer food may be carefully observed, and to know safely when one must administer it; and this is when they are furthest removed from the exacerbation.
