§529μετὰ δὲ τοῦτʼ ἐπιὼν τὰ ὑπὸ Ῥωμαίοις ἐλυμαίνετο, καὶ Πετηλίνοις μηχανήματα προσῆγεν.
After this, marching on, he ravaged the territories under the Romans, and brought siege engines against the Petelinians.
οἱ δʼ ὀλίγοι μὲν ἦσαν, ὑπὸ δὲ τόλμης μετὰ τῶν γυναικῶν ἐπεξέθεον αὐτῷ, καὶ πολλὰ καὶ γενναῖα ἔδρων, τάς τε μηχανὰς αὐτοῦ συνεχῶς ἐνεπίμπρασαν, οὐχ ἧσσον αὐτοῖς τῶν γυναικῶν ἀνδριζομένων.
Though they were few, out of boldness they, along with the women, made sallies against him and performed many noble deeds, and continually set fire to his engines, the women behaving no less courageously than the men.
ὀλιγώτεροι δε γιγνόμενοι καθʼ ἕκαστον ἔργον ἐκακοπάθουν μάλιστα ὑπὸ λιμοῦ· καὶ ὁ Ἀννίβας αἰσθανόμενος περιετείχισεν αὐτούς, καὶ Ἄννωνα ἐπέστησε τῇ πολιορκίᾳ.
But as they became fewer in each action, they suffered extremely from famine; and Hannibal, perceiving this, walled them in with a siege wall and placed Hanno in charge of the siege.
οἱ δʼ, ἐπιτείνοντος αὐτοῖς τοῦ κακοῦ, πρῶτα μὲν τοῦς ἀχρείους σφῶν ἐς μάχας ἐξέβαλον ἐς τὸ μεσοτείχιον, καὶ κτιννυμένους ὑπὸ τοῦ Ἄννωνος ἐφεώρων ἀλύπως ὡς εὐμοιρότερον ἀποθνήσκοντας.
As the misery intensified for them, they first cast out those among them who were useless for battle into the space between the walls, and watched them being slain by Hanno without grief, as dying a happier death.
τῷ δʼ αὐτῷ λόγῳ καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ πάμπαν ἀποροῦντες ἐξέδραμον ἐπὶ τοὺς πολεμίους, καὶ πολλὰ μὲν καὶ γενναῖα καὶ τότε ἔδρασαν, ὑπὸ δὲ ἀτροφίας καὶ ἀσθενείας σωμάτων οὐδʼ ὑποστρέψαι δυνάμενοι διεφθάρησαν ἅπαντες ὑπὸ τῶν Λιβύων.
For the same reason, the rest also, being utterly helpless, rushed out against the enemy, and then too performed many noble deeds, but because of lack of nourishment and bodily weakness, being unable even to retreat, they were all destroyed by the Libyans.
καὶ τὴν πόλιν εἷλεν ὁ Ἄννων, ἐκφυγόντων καὶ ὣς ἀπʼ αὐτῆς ὀλίγων τῶν δραμεῖν δυνηθέντων.
Thus Hanno took the city, though even so a few who were able to run escaped from it.
τούτους διερριμμένους οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι σπουδῇ συνῆγον, καὶ γενομένους ἐς ὀκτακοσίους κατήγαγόν τε καὶ συνῴκισαν μετὰ τόνδε τὸν πόλεμον αὖθις ἐς τὴν πατρίδα, ἀγάμενοι τῆς τε περὶ σφᾶς εὐνοίας καὶ τοῦ παραδόξου τῆς προθυμίας.
These scattered survivors the Romans eagerly gathered together, and when they numbered about eight hundred, they brought them back and resettled them in their fatherland after this war, admiring both their goodwill toward themselves and their extraordinary zeal.
§530τῶν δὲ Κελτιβήρων ἱππέων, οἳ ἐμισθοφόρουν Ἀννίβᾳ, λαμπρῶς ἀγωνιζομένων, ὅσοι Ῥωμαίων ἐστρατήγουν ἐν Ἰβηρίᾳ, τοσούσδε ἑτέρους τὰς πόλεις τὰς ὑπὸ σφίσιν αἰτήσαντες ἐς ἀντίπαλον ἐκείνων ἔπεμψαν ἐς τὴν Ἰταλίαν, οἳ τοῖς ὁμοεθνέσιν, ὅτε πλησίον Ἀννίβου στρατοπεδεύοιεν, ἀναμιγνύμενοι μετέμειθον αὐτούς.
Since the Celtiberian cavalry, who served as mercenaries under Hannibal, fought brilliantly, those of the Romans who were generals in Iberia, demanding as many others from the cities under them, sent them to Italy to oppose those enemies; and they, mingling with their kinsmen whenever they encamped near Hannibal, persuaded them to change sides.
καὶ πολλῶν μετατιθεμένων τε καὶ αὐτομολούντων ἢ ἀποδιδρασκόντων οὐδὲ τὸ λοιπὸν ἦν ἔτι τῷ Ἀννίβᾳ πιστόν, ὑποπτευόμενόν τε ὑπʼ ἐκείνου καὶ ὑποπτεύοντες αὐτόν.
As many of them shifted allegiance, deserted, or ran away, the remainder was no longer loyal to Hannibal, being suspected by him and suspecting him.
κάκιον οὖν ἔπρασσεν ὁ Ἀννίβας τὸ ἀπὸ τοῦδε.
Consequently, Hannibal fared worse from that time on.
§531Ἀργύριππα δʼ ἐστὶ πόλις ἐν τῇ Δαυνίᾳ, ἣν Διομήδης ὁ Ἀργεῖος λέγεται κτίσαι.
Argyrippa is a city in Daunia, which Diomedes the Argive is said to have founded.
καί τις ἔκγονος εἶναι τοῦ Διομήδους νομιζόμενος, Δάσιος, ἀνὴρ εὐμετάβολός τε τὸ φρόνημα καὶ οὐ Διομήδους ἄξιος, Ῥωμαίων περὶ Κάννας τὴν μεγάλην ἧτταν ἡττημένων ἀπέστησε τὴν πατρίδα πρὸς τοὺς Λίβυας ἀπὸ Ῥωμαίων.
A certain Dasius, who was considered to be a descendant of Diomedes—a man of changeable mind and unworthy of Diomedes—revolted his fatherland from the Romans to the Libyans when the Romans suffered the great defeat at Cannae.
τότε δʼ αὖ δυσπραγοῦντος Ἀννίβου ἔλαθεν ἐς Ῥώμην διιππεύσας, καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν βουλὴν ἐπαχθεὶς ἔφη δύνασθαι τὸ ἁμάρτημα ἰάσασθαι καὶ μεταβαλεῖν αὖθις ἐς Ῥωμαίους τὴν πόλιν.
But then again, when Hannibal was in distress, he secretly rode into Rome, and being brought before the Senate, said that he could remedy his error and turn the city back to the Romans.
οἱ δʼ ὀλίγου μὲν αὐτὸν καὶ διέφθειραν, ἐξέβαλον δʼ εὐθὺς ἐκ τῆς πόλεως.
They almost put him to death, but immediately cast him out of the city.
ὁ δὲ καὶ τούσδε καὶ τὸν Ἀννίβαν δεδιὼς ἠλᾶτο ἀνὰ τὴν χώραν, καὶ ὁ μὲν Ἀννίβας αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ τὰ τέκνα ζῶντας ἔκαυσε, τὰ δὲ Ἀργύριππα ἑτέρων ἐνδόντων εἷλε Φάβιος Μάξιμος νυκτός, καὶ κτείνας ὅσους ηὗρε Λιβύων, φρουρὰν ἐπέστησε τῇ πόλει.
He, fearing both them and Hannibal, wandered about the country; and Hannibal burned his wife and children alive, while Fabius Maximus captured Argyrippa by night, as others surrendered it, and having slain all the Libyans he found, placed a garrison in the city.
