§22.9.1ἐπὶ δὲ τοῖς προειρημένοις εἰσήχθη τὸ περὶ Πτολεμαίου διαβούλιον·
After the aforementioned matters, the deliberation concerning Ptolemy was introduced.
§22.9.2ἐν ᾧ προκληθέντων τῶν ἀποσταλέντων πρεσβευτῶν ὑπὸ τῶν Ἀχαιῶν πρὸς Πτολεμαῖον, προελθὼν Λυκόρτας μετὰ τῶν πρεσβευτῶν ἀπελογίσατο πρῶτον μὲν τίνα τρόπον καὶ δοῖεν καὶ λάβοιεν τοὺς ὅρκους ὑπὲρ τῆς συμμαχίας, §22.9.3εἶτα διότι κομίζοιεν δωρεὰν κοινῇ τοῖς Ἀχαιοῖς ἑξακισχίλια μὲν ὅπλα χαλκᾶ πελταστικά, διακόσια δὲ τάλαντα νομίσματος ἐπισήμου χαλκοῦ·
In this deliberation, when the envoys dispatched by the Achaeans to Ptolemy were called forward, Lycortas stepped out with the envoys and first explained in what manner they had both given and received the oaths for the alliance; next, he reported that they were bringing as a joint gift to the Achaeans six thousand bronze peltast shields and two hundred talents of coined bronze money.
§22.9.4πρὸς δὲ τούτοις ἐπῄνεσε τὸν βασιλέα καὶ βραχέα περὶ τῆς εὐνοίας αὐτοῦ καὶ προθυμίας τῆς εἰς τὸ ἔθνος εἰπὼν κατέστρεψε τὸν λόγον.
In addition to this, he praised the king, and after speaking briefly about his goodwill and eagerness toward the nation, he concluded his speech.
§22.9.5ἐφʼ οἷς ἀναστὰς ὁ τῶν Ἀχαιῶν στρατηγὸς Ἀρίσταινος ἤρετο τόν τε παρὰ τοῦ Πτολεμαίου πρεσβευτὴν καὶ τοὺς ἐξαπεσταλμένους ὑπὸ τῶν Ἀχαιῶν ἐπὶ τὴν ἀνανέωσιν, ποίαν ἧκε συμμαχίαν ἀνανεωσάμενος.
Whereupon Aristainos, the general of the Achaeans, rose and asked both the envoy from Ptolemy and those dispatched by the Achaeans for the renewal, what kind of alliance they had renewed and come back with.
§22.9.6οὐδενὸς δʼ ἀποκρινομένου, πάντων δὲ διαλαλούντων πρὸς ἀλλήλους, πλῆρες ἦν τὸ βουλευτήριον ἀπορίας.
But as no one answered and everyone was whispering to one another, the senate house was filled with perplexity.
§22.9.7ἦν δὲ τὸ ποιοῦν τὴν ἀλογίαν τοιοῦτον.
Now, the cause of this inconsistency was as follows.
οὐσῶν καὶ πλειόνων συμμαχιῶν τοῖς Ἀχαιοῖς πρὸς τὴν Πτολεμαίου βασιλείαν, καὶ τούτων ἐχουσῶν μεγάλας διαφορὰς κατὰ τὰς τῶν καιρῶν περιστάσεις, §22.9.8οὔθʼ ὁ παρὰ τοῦ Πτολεμαίου πρεσβευτὴς οὐδεμίαν ἐποιήσατο διαστολήν, ὅτʼ ἀνενεοῦτο, καθολικῶς δὲ περὶ τοῦ πράγματος ἐλάλησεν, οὔθʼ οἱ πεμφθέντες πρέσβεις, §22.9.9ἀλλʼ ὡς μιᾶς ὑπαρχούσης αὐτοί τε τοὺς ὅρκους ἔδοσαν καὶ παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως ἔλαβον.
Although there were several alliances between the Achaeans and the kingdom of Ptolemy, and these had great differences according to the circumstances of the times, neither the envoy from Ptolemy made any distinction when the renewal was made, but spoke generally about the matter, nor did the dispatched envoys; but as if there were only one alliance, they themselves gave the oaths and received them from the king.
§22.9.10ὅθεν προφερομένου τοῦ στρατηγοῦ πάσας τὰς συμμαχίας καὶ κατὰ μέρος ἐν ἑκάστῃ διαστελλομένου, μεγάλης οὔσης διαφορᾶς, ἐζήτει τὸ πλῆθος εἰδέναι ποίαν ἀνανεοῖτο συμμαχίαν.
Therefore, when the general produced all the alliances and distinguished the details in each, there being a great difference, the multitude demanded to know what kind of alliance was being renewed.
§22.9.11οὐ δυναμένου δὲ λόγον ὑποσχεῖν οὔτε τοῦ Φιλοποίμενος, ὃς ἐποιήσατο στρατηγῶν τὴν ἀνανέωσιν, οὔτε τῶν περὶ τὸν Λυκόρταν τῶν πρεσβευσάντων εἰς τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρειαν, §22.9.12οὗτοι μὲν ἐσχεδιακότες ἐφαίνοντο τοῖς κοινοῖς πράγμασιν, ὁ δʼ Ἀρίσταινος μεγάλην ἐφείλκετο φαντασίαν ὡς μόνος εἰδὼς τί λέγει, καὶ τέλος οὐκ εἴασε κυρωθῆναι τὸ διαβούλιον, ἀλλʼ εἰς ὑπέρθεσιν ἤγαγε διὰ τὴν προειρημένην ἀλογίαν.
Since neither Philopoemen, who had made the renewal when he was general, nor Lycortas and his colleagues who had gone as envoys to Alexandria, were able to give an account, these men appeared to have acted in a careless manner regarding public affairs, while Aristainos gained a great reputation as being the only one who knew what he was saying, and finally he did not allow the deliberation to be ratified, but brought it to a postponement because of the aforementioned inconsistency.
§22.9.13τῶν δὲ παρὰ τοῦ Σελεύκου πρέσβεων εἰσελθόντων, ἔδοξε τοῖς Ἀχαιοῖς τὴν μὲν φιλίαν ἀνανεώσασθαι πρὸς τὸν Σέλευκον, τὴν δὲ τῶν πλοίων δωρεὰν κατὰ τὸ παρὸν ἀπείπασθαι.
When the envoys from Seleucus entered, the Achaeans resolved to renew friendship with Seleucus, but for the present to decline the gift of ships.
§22.9.14καὶ τότε μὲν περὶ τούτων βουλευσάμενοι διέλυσαν εἰς τὰς ἰδίας ἕκαστοι πόλεις.
Having deliberated on these matters at that time, they dispersed, each to their own cities.
