§4.1Ἀκούσατε λόγον Κυρίου, υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ, ὅτι κρίσις τῷ κυρίῳ πρὸς τοὺς κατοικοῦντας τὴν γῆν, διότι οὐκ ἔστιν ἀλήθεια οὐδὲ ἔλεος οὐδὲ ἐπίγνωσις θεοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς·
Hear the word of the Lord, you children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God on the earth.
§4.2ἀρὰ καὶ ψεῦδος καὶ φόνος καὶ κλοπὴ καὶ μοιχεία κέχυται ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ αἵματα ἐφʼ αἵμασιν μίσγουσιν.
Cursing, lying, murder, theft, and adultery are poured out upon the earth, and they mingle blood with blood.
§4.3διὰ τοῦτο πενθήσει ἡ γῆ, καὶ μικρυνθήσεται σὺν πᾶσιν τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν αὐτήν, σὺν τοῖς θηρίοις τοῦ ἀγροῦ καὶ σὺν τοῖς ἑρπετοῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ σὺν τοῖς πετεινοῖς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ οἱ ἰχθύες τῆς θαλάσσης ἐκλείψουσιν, §4.4ὅπως μηδεὶς μήτε δικάζηται μήτε ἐλέγχῃ μηδείς.
Therefore the land shall mourn, and shall be diminished with all its inhabitants, with the beasts of the field, and with the creeping things of the earth, and with the birds of heaven; and the fish of the sea shall fail, that no one may contend, nor anyone accuse.
ὁ δὲ λαός μου ὡς ἀντιλεγόμενος ἱερεύς,
But my people are like a priest who is contended with.
§4.5καὶ ἀσθενήσει ἡμέρας, καὶ ἀσθενήσει προφήτης μετὰ σοῦ· νυκτὶ ὡμοίωσα τὴν μητέρα σου,
And you shall stumble by day, and the prophet also shall stumble with you; by night I have made your mother like to perish.
§4.6ὡμοιώθη ὁ λαός μου ὡς οὐκ ἔχων γνῶσιν·
My people are made like to those who have no knowledge.
ὅτι σὺ ἐπίγνωσιν ἀπώσω, κἀγὼ ἀπώσομαι σέ τοῦ ἱερατεύειν μοι· καὶ ἐπελάθου νόμον θεοῦ σου, κἀγὼ ἐπιλήσομαι τέκνων σου.
Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from serving me as priest; and since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
§4.7κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν οὕτως ἥμαρτόν μοι· τὴν δόξαν αὐτῶν εἰς ἀτιμίαν θήσομαι,
According to their multitude, so they sinned against me; I will change their glory into dishonor.
§4.8ἁμαρτίας λαοῦ μου φάγονται, καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἀδικίαις αὐτῶν λήμψονται τὰς ψυχὰς αὐτῶν.
They feed on the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
§4.9καὶ ἔσται καθὼς ὁ λαὸς οὕτως καὶ ὁ ἱερεύς, καὶ ἐκδικήσω ἐπʼ αὐτὸν τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰ διαβούλια αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδώσω αὐτῷ.
And it shall be, like people, like priest; and I will punish them for their ways, and requite them for their counsels.
§4.10καὶ φάγονται καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐμπλησθῶσιν, ἐπόρνευσαν καὶ οὐ μὴ κατευθύνωσιν, διότι τὸν κύριον ἐγκατέλιπον τοῦ φυλάξαι πορνείαν.
And they shall eat, and not be satisfied; they have committed whoredom, and shall not prosper, because they have forsaken the Lord to give heed to whoredom.
§4.11καὶ οἶνον καὶ μέθυσμα ἐδέξατο καρδία λαοῦ μου·
Wine and strong drink have taken away the heart of my people.
§4.12ἐν συμβόλοις ἐπηρώτων, καὶ ἐν ῥάβδοις αὐτοῦ ἀπήγγελλον αὐτῷ· πνεύματι πορνείας ἐπλανήθησαν καὶ ἐξεπόρνευσαν ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτῶν.
They inquired of signs, and their staffs declared to them; for a spirit of whoredom has led them astray, and they have played the harlot, departing from their God.
§4.13ἐπὶ τὰς κορυφὰς τῶν ὀρέων ἐθυσίαζον, καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς βουνοὺς ἔθυον ὑποκάτω δρυὸς καὶ λεύκης καὶ δένδρου συσκιάζοντος, ὅτι καλὸν σκέπη. διὰ τοῦτο ἐκπορνεύσουσιν αἱ θυγατέρες ὑμῶν, καὶ αἱ νύμφαι ὑμῶν μοιχεύσουσιν·
They sacrificed on the tops of the mountains, and burned incense on the hills, under the oak and poplar and shadowy tree, because the shade is good; therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your brides shall commit adultery.
§4.14καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐπισκέψωμαι ἐπὶ τὰς θυγατέρας ὑμῶν ὅταν πορνεύωσιν, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς νύμφας ὑμῶν ὅταν μοιχεύωσιν· ὅτι αὐτοὶ μετὰ τῶν πορνῶν συνεφύροντο, καὶ μετὰ τῶν τετελεσμένων ἔθυον, καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὁ συνίων συνεπλέκετο μετὰ πόρνης.
And I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your brides when they commit adultery; for the men themselves consorted with harlots, and sacrificed with the initiated ones, and the people that does not understand was entangled with a harlot.
§4.15σὺ δέ, Ἰσραήλ, μὴ ἀγνόει, καὶ Ἰούδα, μὴ εἰσπορεύεσθε εἰς Γάλγαλα, καὶ μὴ ἀναβαίνετε εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ὤν, καὶ μὴ ὀμνύετε ζῶντα Κύριον.
But you, Israel, do not be ignorant, and you, Judah, do not enter into Galgala, and do not go up to the house of On, and do not swear, 'The Lord lives'.
§4.16διότι ὡς δάμαλις παροιστρῶσα παροίστρησεν Ἰσραήλ· νῦν νεμήσει αὐτοὺς Κύριος ὡς ἀμνὸν ἐν εὐρυχώρῳ.
For Israel was stubborn like a stubborn heifer; now the Lord will feed them like a lamb in a wide place.
§4.17μέτοχος εἰδώλων Ἐφράιμ ἔθηκεν ἑαυτῷ σκάνδαλα,
Ephraim is a partner of idols; he has set stumbling blocks for himself.
§4.18ᾑρέτισεν Χαναναίους· πορνεύοντες ἐξεπόρνευσαν, ἠγάπησαν ἀτιμίαν ἐκ φρυάγματος αὐτῆς.
He has chosen Canaanites; they have committed whoredom continually, they loved dishonor from her pride.
§4.19συστροφὴ πνεύματος σὺ εἶ ἐν ταῖς πτέρυξιν αὐτῆς, καὶ καταισχυνθήσονται ἐκ τῶν θυσιαστηρίων αὐτῶν.
You are a whirlwind of spirit in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their altars.
