§8.1Ὅτε δὲ συνετέλεσαν δειπνοῦντες, εἰσήγαγον Τωβείαν πρὸς αὐτήν.
When they had finished eating, they brought Tobias in to her.
§8.2ὁ δὲ πορευομενος ἐμνήσθη τῶν λόγων Ῥαφαήλ, καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν τέφραν τῶν θυμιαμάτων καὶ ἐπέθηκεν τὴν καρδίαν τοῦ ἰχθύος καὶ τὸ ἦπαρ, καὶ ἐκάπνισεν.
And as he went, he remembered the words of Raphael, and took the ashes of the incense, and put the heart and the liver of the fish upon them, and made a smoke.
§8.3ὅτε δὲ ὠσφράνθη τὸ δαιμόνιον τῆς ὀσμῆς, ἔφυγεν εἰς τὰ ἀνώτατα Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸ ὁ ἄγγελος.
And when the evil spirit smelled the smell, he fled into the utmost parts of Egypt, and the angel bound him.
§8.4ὡς δὲ συνεκλείσθησαν ἀμφότεροι, ἀνέστη Τωβείας ἀπὸ τῆς κλίνης καὶ εἶπεν Ἀνάστηθι, ἀδελφή, καὶ προσευξώμεθα ἴνα ἡμᾶς ἐλεήσῃ ὁ κύριος. §8.5καὶ ἤρξατο Τωβίας λέγειν Εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, καὶ εὐλογητὸν τὸ ὄνομά σου τὸ ἅγιον καὶ ἔνδοξον εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας· εὐλογησάτωσάν σε οἱ οὐρανοὶ καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ κτίσεις σου.
And when they were both shut in together, Tobias rose from the bed and said, "Rise, sister, and let us pray that the Lord may have mercy on us." And Tobias began to say, "Blessed are you, O God of our fathers, and blessed is your holy and glorious name forever; let the heavens bless you, and all your creatures.
§8.6σὺ ἐποίησας Ἀδάμ, καὶ ἔδωκας αὐτῷ βοηθὸν Εὕαν στήριγμα τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ· ἐκ τούτων ἐγενήθη τὸ ἀνθρώπων, σπέρμα.
You made Adam, and gave him Eve his wife for a helper and support; from them the seed of mankind was born.
σὺ εἶπας Οὐ καλὸν εἶναι τὸν ἄνθρωπον μόνον, ποιήσωμεν αὐτῷ βοηθὸν ὅμοιον αὐτῷ. §8.7καὶ νῦν, Κύριε, οὐ διὰ πορνείαν ἐγὼ λαμβάνω τὴν ἀδελφὴν μου ταύτην, ἀλλ᾿ ἐπ᾿ ἀληθείας· ἐπίταξον ἐλεῆσαί με καὶ αὐτῇ συνκαταγηρᾶσαι. §8.8καὶ εἶπεν μετʼ αὐτοῦ Ἀμήν. §8.9καὶ ἐκοιμήθησαν ἀμφότεροιτὴν νύκτα. (¹¹)Καὶ ἀναστὰς Ῥαγουὴλ ἐπορεύθη καὶ ὤρυξεν τάφον, §8.10λέγων Μὴ καὶ οὗτος ἀποθάνῃ. §8.11καὶ ἦλθεν Ῥαγουὴλ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν ἑαυτοῦ, §8.12καὶ εἶπεν Ἔδνᾳ τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ (¹⁴)Ἀπόστειλον μίαν τῶν παιδισκῶν, καὶ εἰδέτωσαν εἰ ζῇ· εἰ δὲ μή, ἵνα θάψωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ μηδεὶς γνῷ. §8.13καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ἡ παιδίσκη ἀνοἰξασα τὴν θύραν. καὶ εὗρεν τοὺς δύο καθεύδοντας.
You said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make him a helper like himself.' And now, O Lord, I take this my sister not for lust, but in truth; command that I and she may grow old together." And she said with him, "Amen." And they both slept that night. (¹¹) And Raguel arose, and went and dug a grave, saying, "Lest he also should die." And Raguel came into his house, and said to Edna his wife, (¹⁴) "Send one of the maids, and let them see if he is alive; but if not, that we may bury him, and no one know it." And the maid opened the door and went in, and found them both asleep.
§8.14καὶ ἐξελθοῦσα ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι ζῇ.
And she came out, and told them that he was alive.
§8.15Καὶ εὐλόγησεν Ῥαγουὴλ τὸν θεὸν λέγων Εὐλογητὸς εἶ σὺ ὁ θεὸς ἐν πάσῃ εὐλογίᾳ· καὶ εὐλογείτωσάν σε οἱ ἅγιοί σου καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ κτίσεις σου, πάντες οἱ ἄγγελοί σου καὶ οἱ ἐκλεκτοί σου εὐλογείτωσάν σε εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.
And Raguel blessed God, saying, "Blessed are you, O God, with all pure and holy blessing; and let your saints and all your creatures bless you, and let all your angels and your elect bless you forever.
§8.16εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὅτι ηὔφρανάς με, καὶ οὐκ ἐγένετό μοι καθὼς ὑπενόουν, (18)ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ πολὺ ἔλεός σου ἐποίησας μεθʼ ἡμῶν.
Blessed are you, because you have made me glad, and it has not happened to me as I suspected; (18) but you have dealt with us according to your great mercy.
§8.17εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὅτι ἠλέησας δύο μονογενεῖς· ποίησον αὐτοῖς, δέσποτα, ἔλεος, συντέλεσον τὴν ζωὴν αὐτῶν ἐν ὑγείᾳ μετὰ εὐφροσύνης καὶ ἐλέους. §8.18ἐκελευσεν δὲ τοῖς οἰκέταις χῶσαι τὸν τάφον.
Blessed are you, because you had mercy on two only-begotten children; grant them, O Lord, mercy, and finish their life in health with joy and mercy." And he commanded his servants to fill up the grave.
§8.19Καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτοῖς γάμον ἡμερῶν δέκα τεσσάρων.
And he kept the wedding feast for them fourteen days.
§8.20καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ῥαγουὴλ πρὶν ἢ συντελεσθῆναι τὰς ἡμέρας τοῦ γάμου ἐνόρκως, μὴ ἐξελθεῖν αὐτὸν ἐὰν μὴ πληρωθῶσιν αἱ δέκα τέσσαρες ἡμέραι τοῦ γάμου, §8.21καὶ τότε λαβόντα τὸ ἥμισυ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτοῦ πορεύεσθαι μετὰ ὑγείας πρὸς τὸν πατέρα· καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ ὅταν ἀποθάνω καὶ ἡ γυνή μου.
For Raguel had said to him by an oath, before the days of the marriage were finished, that he should not depart until the fourteen days of the marriage were fulfilled; and then he should take the half of his goods, and go in safety to his father; and that the rest should be theirs, when he and his wife were dead.
