§12.1Καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Τωβεὶτ Τωβείαν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὅρα, τέκνον, μισθὸν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τῷ συνελθόντι σοι, καὶ προσθεῖναι αὐτῷ δεῖ §12.2καὶ εἶπεν Πάτερ, οὐ βλάπτομαι δοὺς αὐτῷ τὸ ἥμισυ ὧν ἐνήνοχα, §12.3ὅτι με ἀγίοχέν σοι ὑγιῆ, καὶ τὴν γυναῖκά μου ἐθεράπευσεν καὶ τὸ ἀργύριόν μου ἤνεγκεν, καὶ σέ ὁμοίως ἐθεράπευσεν. §12.4καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πρεσβύτης Δικαιοῦται αὐτῷ. §12.5καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸν ἄγγελον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Λάβε τὸ ἥμισυ πάντων ὧν ἐνηνόχατε. §12.6καὶ καλέσας τοὺς δύο κρυπτῶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Εὐλογεῖτε τὸν θεὸν καὶ αὐτῷ ἐξομολογεῖσθε, μεγαλωσύνην δίδοτε αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐξομολογεῖσθε αὐτῷ ἐνώπιον πάντων τῶν ζώντων περὶ ὧν ἐποίησεν μεθʼ ὑμῶν.
And Tobit called his son Tobias and said to him, "My child, see to the wages for the man who went with you, and more must be added to it." And he said, "Father, it does no harm to me to give him half of what I have brought back, for he has brought me back to you in safety, and healed my wife, and brought my money, and likewise healed you." And the old man said, "It is his due." And he called the angel and said to him, "Take half of all that you have brought back." Then he called the two of them secretly and said to them, "Bless God and acknowledge him, give him grandeur, and acknowledge him before all the living for what he has done for you.
ἀγαθὸν τὸ εὐλογεῖν τὸν θεὸν καὶ ὑψοῖν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, τοὺς λόγους τῶν ἔργων τοῦ θεοῦ ἐντίμως ὑποδεικνύοντες· καὶ μὴ ὀκνεῖτε ἐξομολογεῖσθαι αὐτῷ.
It is good to bless God and exalt his name, showing forth the words of the works of God with honor; and do not hesitate to acknowledge him.
§12.7μυστήριον βασιλέως καλὸν κρύψαι, τὰ δὲ ἔργα τοῦ θεοῦ ἀνακαλύπτειν ἐνδόξως.
It is good to keep close the secret of a king, but to reveal gloriously the works of God.
ἀγαθὸν ποιήσατε, καὶ κακὸν οὐχ εὑρήσει ὑμᾶς.
Do good, and evil will not overtake you.
§12.8ἀγαθὸν προσευχὴ μετὰ νηστείας καὶ ἐλεημοσύνης καὶ δικαιοσύνης· ἀγαθὸν τὸ ὀλίγον μετὰ δικαιοσύνης ἢ πολὺ μετὰ ἀδικίας· καλὸν ποιῆσαι ἐλεημοσύνην ἢ θησαυρίσαι χρυσίον.
Prayer with fasting and almsgiving and righteousness is good; a little with righteousness is better than much with unrighteousness; it is better to give alms than to lay up gold.
§12.9ἐλεημοσύνη ἐκ θανάτου ῥύεται, καὶ αὕτη ἀποκαθαριεῖ πᾶσαν ἁμαρτίαν· οἱ ποιοῦντες ἐλεημοσύνας καὶ δικαιοσύνας πλησθήσονται ζωῆς· §12.10οἱ δὲ ἁμαρτάνοντες πολέμιοί εἰσιν τῆς ἑαυτῶν ζωῆς.
Almsgiving delivers from death, and it will purge away every sin; those who practice almsgiving and righteousness will be filled with life; but those who commit sin are enemies to their own life.
§12.11οὐ μὴ κρύψω ἀφʼ ὑμῶν πᾶν ῥῆμα· εἴρηκα δὴ μυστήριον βασιλέως κρύψαι καλόν, τὰ δὲ ἔργα τοῦ θεοῦ ἀνακαλύπτειν ἐνδόξως.
I will not hide any word from you; indeed, I have said that it is good to keep close the secret of a king, but to reveal gloriously the works of God.
§12.12καὶ νῦν ὅτε προσηύξω σὺ καὶ ἡ νύμφη σου Σάρρα, ἐγὼ προσήγαγον τὸ μνημόσυνον τῆς προσευχῆς ὑμῶν ἐνώπιον τοῦ ἁγίου· καὶ ὅτε ἔθαπτες τοὺς νεκρούς, ὡσαύτως συμπαρήμην σοι· §12.13καὶ ὅτε οὐκ ὤκνησας ἀναστῆναι καὶ καταλιπεῖν τὸ ἄριστόν σου ὅπως ἀπελθὼν περιστείλῃς τὸν νεκρόν, οὐκ ἔλαθές με ἀγαθοποιῶν, ἀλλὰ σὺν σοὶ ἤμην.
And now, when you and your daughter-in-law Sarah prayed, I brought the memorial of your prayer before the Holy One; and when you buried the dead, I was likewise present with you; and when you did not hesitate to rise and leave your dinner in order to go and lay out the dead, your good deed was not hidden from me, but I was with you.
§12.14καὶ νῦν ἀπέστειλέν με ὁ θεὸς ἰάσασθαί σε καὶ τὴν νύμφην σου Σάρραν.
And now God sent me to heal you and Sarah your daughter-in-law.
§12.15ἐγὼ εἰμι Ῥαφαήλ, εἰς ἐκ τῶν ἑπτὰ ἁγίων ἀγγέλων οἳ προσαναφέρουσιν τὰς προσευχὰς τῶν ἁγίων καὶ εἰσπορεύονται ἐνώπιον τῆς δόξης τοῦ ἁγίου. §12.16Καὶ ἐταράχθησαν οἱ δύο καὶ ἔπεσον ἐπὶ πρόσωπον, ὅτι ἐφοβήθησαν.
I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the presence of the glory of the Holy One." And they were both troubled, and fell upon their faces, for they were afraid.
§12.17καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Μὴ φοβεῖσθε, εἰρήνη ὑμῖν ἔσται· τὸν δὲ θεὸν εὐλογεῖτε εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, §12.18ὅτι οὐ τῇ ἐμαυτοῦ χάριτι ἀλλὰ τῆ θελήσει τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν· ὅθεν εὐλογεῖτε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
But he said to them, "Do not be afraid, peace be to you; but bless God forever, for not by any favor of mine, but by the will of your God I came; therefore bless him forever.
§12.19πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ὠπτανόμην ὑμῖν, καὶ οὐκ ἔφαγον οὐδὲ ἔπιον, ἀλλὰ ὅρασιν ὑμεῖς ἐθεωρεῖτε.
All these days I was visible to you, and I did not eat or drink, but you beheld a vision.
§12.20καὶ νῦν ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ θεῷ, διότι ἀναβαίνω πρὸς τὸν ἀποστείλανταά με, καὶ γράψατε πάντα τὰ συντελεσθέντα εἰς βιβλίον. §12.21καὶ ἀνέστησαν, καὶ οὐκ εἶδον αὐτόν.
And now acknowledge God, for I ascend to him who sent me; and write in a book all the things that have been done." And they rose, and they no longer saw him.
§12.22καὶ ἐξομολογοῦντο τὰ ἔργα τὰ μεγάλα καὶ θαυμαστὰ αὐτοῦ, ὡς ὤφθη αὐτοῖς ἄγγελος Κυρίου.
And they acknowledged his great and wonderful works, how an angel of the Lord had appeared to them.
