§8.34.1ἐκ δὲ Μεγάλης πόλεως ἰόντι ἐς Μεσσήνην καὶ σταδίους μάλιστα προελθόντι ἑπτά, ἔστιν ἐν ἀριστερᾷ τῆς λεωφόρου θεῶν ἱερόν.
Going from Megalopolis towards Messene, when you have gone about seven stades, there is on the left of the highway a sanctuary of the goddesses.
καλοῦσι δὲ καὶ αὐτὰς τὰς θεὰς καὶ τὴν χώραν τὴν περὶ τὸ ἱερὸν Μανίας·
They call both the goddesses themselves and the country around the sanctuary Maniae.
δοκεῖν δέ μοι θεῶν τῶν Εὐμενίδων ἐστὶν ἐπίκλησις, καὶ Ὀρέστην ἐπὶ τῷ φόνῳ τῆς μητρός φασιν αὐτόθι μανῆναι.
In my opinion, this is an epithet of the goddesses called Eumenides, and they say that Orestes went mad there on account of the murder of his mother.
§8.34.2οὐ πόρρω δὲ τοῦ ἱεροῦ γῆς χῶμά ἐστιν οὐ μέγα, ἐπίθημα ἔχον λίθου πεποιημένον δάκτυλον, καὶ δὴ καὶ ὄνομα τῷ χώματί ἐστι Δακτύλου μνῆμα·
Not far from the sanctuary is a small mound of earth, which has as a cover a finger made of stone. Indeed, the name of the mound is the Tomb of the Finger.
ἐνταῦθα ἔκφρονα Ὀρέστην γενόμενον λέγουσιν ἕνα τῆς ἑτέρας τῶν χειρῶν ἀποφαγεῖν δάκτυλον.
Here, they say, Orestes, when he became out of his mind, bit off one of the fingers of one of his hands.
τούτῳ δέ ἐστιν ἕτερον συνεχὲς χωρίον Ἄκη καλούμενον, ὅτι ἐγένετο ἐν αὐτῷ τῆς νόσου τῷ Ὀρέστῃ τὰ ἰάματα·
Adjacent to this is another place called Ace, because there the cure of his madness was effected for Orestes.
πεποίηται δὲ Εὐμενίσι καὶ αὐτόθι ἱερὸν.
And there too a sanctuary has been built for the Eumenides.
§8.34.3ταύτας τὰς θεάς, ἡνίκα τὸν Ὀρέστην ἔκφρονα ἔμελλον ποιήσειν, φασὶν αὐτῷ φανῆναι μελαίνας· ὡς δὲ ἀπέφαγε τὸν δάκτυλον, τὰς δὲ αὖθις δοκεῖν οἱ λευκὰς εἶναι, καὶ αὐτὸν σωφρονῆσαί τε ἐπὶ τῇ θέᾳ καὶ οὕτω ταῖς μὲν ἐνήγισεν ἀποτρέπων τὸ μήνιμα αὐτῶν, ταῖς δὲ ἔθυσε ταῖς λευκαῖς.
They say that these goddesses, when they were about to drive Orestes mad, appeared to him as black; but when he had bitten off his finger, they seemed to him to be white again, and he recovered his senses at the sight, and so he offered burnt sacrifices to the one to avert their anger, and sacrificed to the white ones.
ὁμοῦ δὲ αὐταῖς καὶ Χάρισι θύειν νομίζουσι.
And they are accustomed to sacrifice to them together with the Graces.
πρὸς δὲ τῷ χωρίῳ τοῖς Ἄκεσιν ἕτερόν ἐστιν Κουρεῖον ὀνομαζόμενον ἱερόν, ὅτι Ὀρέστης ἐνταῦθα ἐκείρατο τὴν κόμην, ἐπειδὴ ἐντὸς ἐγένετο αὑτοῦ·
And near the place called Aces is another sanctuary called Cureum, because Orestes cut off his hair there when he came to himself.
§8.34.4Πελοποννησίων δὲ οἱ τὰ ἀρχαῖα μνημονεύοντες πρότερα τῷ Ὀρέστῃ τὰ ἐν Ἀρκαδίᾳ γενέσθαι φασὶν ὑπὸ Ἐρινύων τῶν Κλυταιμνήστρας ἢ ἐν Ἀρείῳ πάγῳ τὴν κρίσιν, καὶ αὐτῷ κατήγορον οὐ τὸν Τυνδάρεων—περιεῖναι γὰρ οὐκέτι ἐκεῖνον—, Περίλαον δὲ ἐπιστῆναι δίκην ἐπὶ τῷ αἵματι τῆς μητρὸς αἰτοῦντα ἅτε ἀνεψιὸν τῆς Κλυταιμνήστρας· Ἰκαρίου γὰρ παῖδα εἶναι Περίλαον, γενέσθαι δὲ ὕστερον καὶ θυγατέρας τῷ Ἰκαρίῳ.
Those of the Peloponnesians who remember ancient history say that the events in Arcadia brought upon Orestes by the Furies of Clytemnestra took place before the trial on the Areopagus, and that his accuser was not Tyndareus—for they say he was no longer alive—but that Perilaus, as a cousin of Clytemnestra, stood up to demand justice for the blood of his mother; for they say Perilaus was a son of Icarius, and that daughters were born to Icarius later.
§8.34.5ἐκ Μανιῶν δὲ ὁδὸς ἐπὶ τὸν Ἀλφειόν ἐστιν ὅσον πέντε σταδίων καὶ δέκα· κατὰ τοῦτο Γαθεάτας ποταμὸς ἐκδίδωσιν ἐς τὸν Ἀλφειόν, ἐς δὲ τὸν Γαθεάταν πρότερον ἔτι κάτεισιν ὁ Καρνίων.
From Maniae the road to the Alpheius is about fifteen stades; at this point the river Gatheates flows into the Alpheius, and into the Gatheates, even before this, the Carnion flows down.
τούτῳ μὲν δὴ αἱ πηγαὶ γῆς εἰσι τῆς Αἰγύτιδος ὑπὸ τοῦ Ἀπόλλωνος τοῦ Κερεάτα τὸ ἱερόν, τῷ Γαθεάτᾳ δὲ τῆς Κρωμίτιδος χώρας ἐν Γαθέαις.
The springs of the Carnion are in the territory of Aegygtis, below the sanctuary of Apollo Cereates, and those of the Gatheates are at Gatheae in the Cromitian territory.
§8.34.6ἡ δὲ Κρωμῖτις ἀνωτέρω τοῦ Ἀλφειοῦ σταδίους ὡς τεσσαράκοντά ἐστι, καὶ ἐν αὐτῇ πόλεως Κρώμων οὐ παντάπασι τὰ ἐρείπια ἦν ἐξίτηλα.
The Cromitian territory is about forty stades above the Alpheius, and in it the ruins of the city of Cromi were not altogether vanished.
ἐκ δὲ Κρώμων ὡς εἴκοσι στάδιά ἐστιν ἐπὶ Νυμφάδα· καταρρεῖται δὲ ὕδατι καὶ δένδρων ἀνάπλεώς ἐστιν ἡ Νυμφάς.
From Cromi it is about twenty stades to Nymphas; and Nymphas is well-watered and full of trees.
καὶ ἀπʼ αὐτῆς στάδια εἴκοσί ἐστιν ἐπὶ τὸ Ἑρμαῖον, ἐς ὃ Μεσσηνίοις καὶ Μεγαλοπολίταις εἰσὶν ὅροι· πεποίηνται δὲ αὐτόθι καὶ Ἑρμῆν ἐπὶ στήλῃ.
And from there it is twenty stades to the Hermaeum, which is the boundary between the Messenians and the Megalopolitans; and they have also set up there a Hermes on a pillar.
