Strabo · Geography §12.2.10-12.2.11

Products, Geography, and Kings of Cappadocia

Passage 378 of 577 · Greek

Summary

Describes the geography, climate, local products (Sinopean earth, minerals, stone), and administrative districts of Cappadocia, and details its political history, where the Cappadocians declined freedom from Rome and elected Ariobarzanes as king, leading down to the appointment of Archelaus.

As for the size of the country, in breadth, that from the Pontus to the Taurus is about one thousand eight hundred stades, and in length, from Lycaonia and Phrygia to the Euphrates towards the east and Armenia, about three thousand stades.
It is productive in crops, and especially in wheat and all kinds of cattle; but though it is further south than the Pontus, it is colder.
Bagadania, although it is a plain and the southernmost of all (for it lies at the foot of the Taurus), produces hardly any fruitful trees, and it, as well as the greater part of the rest, is a pasture for wild asses, and especially the region around Garsaoura, Lycaonia, and Morimene.
In Cappadocia is also produced the so-called Sinopean red earth, the best of all; and the Iberian is rival to it.
It was named Sinopean because the merchants used to bring it down there before the trade of the Ephesians had extended to the people here.
It is also said that slabs of crystal and onyx stone were found near the land of the Galatians by the miners of Archelaus.
There was also a certain place producing a white stone resembling ivory in color, which yielded small blocks like whetstones, from which they manufactured the handles for small knives; and another place yielding large blocks for window-panes, so that they were even exported abroad.
The boundary between the Pontus and Cappadocia is a certain mountainous tract parallel to the Taurus, having its beginning from the western extremities of Chammanene, upon which is situated the precipitous fortress Dasmenda, and extending to the eastern parts of Laviansene.
Chammanene and Laviansene are prefectures of Cappadocia.
It happened that, when the Romans first regulated the affairs of Asia after defeating Antiochus, and made treaties of friendship and alliance with both the nations and the kings, this honor was given to the other kings individually, but to the Cappadocian king and to the nation jointly.
When the royal line became extinct, the Romans permitted them to govern themselves in accordance with the established friendship and alliance with the nation, but they, having sent ambassadors, declined freedom (for they said they were not able to bear it) and requested that a king be appointed for them.
The Romans, though wondering if there were any people so exhausted in respect to freedom, nevertheless permitted them to choose from among themselves by vote whomsoever they wished; and they chose Ariobarzanes.
When the family had advanced to the third generation, it became extinct, and Archelaus, who was in no way related to them, was established as king, Antony having appointed him.
This is all concerning Great Cappadocia; as for Cilicia Tracheia, which was added to it, it is better to traverse it in the account of the whole of Cilicia.

Notes

  1. 12.2.10πρὶν ἢ τὸ τῶν Ἐφεσίων ἐμπόριον μέχρι τῶν ἐνθάδε ἀνθρώπων διῖχθαι — The conjunction πρίν (πρὶν ἤ) introduces an accusative and infinitive construction (subject: τὸ ... ἐμπόριον, infinitive: διῖχθαι from διικνέομαι), meaning "before...".
  2. 12.2.11τοῖς μὲν ἄλλοις βασιλεῦσιν αὐτοῖς καθʼ ἑαυτοὺς δοθῆναι τὴν τιμὴν ταύτην, τῷ δὲ Καππάδοκι καὶ αὐτῷ δὲ τῷ ἔθνει κοινῇ — This is the internal structure of the accusative with infinitive clause (δοθῆναι...) acting as the subject of the impersonal verb συνέβη. It contrasts (μέν... δέ...) how the honor was given to other kings "individually" (αὐτοῖς καθʼ ἑαυτοὺς) but to the Cappadocians "jointly" (κοινῇ) to both the king and the nation.
  3. 12.2.11εἴ τινες οὕτως εἶεν ἀπειρηκότες πρὸς τὴν ἐλευθερίαν — The εἰ clause acts as the object (or explanatory clause) after the participle θαυμάσαντες expressing wonder ("wondering if/that..."). εἶεν is an optative of indirect speech or subjective reason. The phrase ἀπειρηκότες πρὸς... is an idiomatic expression meaning "having despaired of" or "being completely exhausted/averse in respect to".
