§6.1Ἡ δὲ ἐκλογὴ τῶν σημείων ἡ κατὰ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ὦδς λαμβάνεται.
The selection of signs concerning men is made as follows.
Ὅσος οἱ πόδες εὐφυεῖς τε καὶ μεγάλοι διηρθρωμένοι τε καὶ νευρώδεις, ἐρρωμένοι τὰ περὶ τὴν ψυχήν· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν γένος.
Those whose feet are well-formed and large, well-jointed and sinewy, are strong in their souls; this is referred to the male sex.
Ὅσοι δὲ τοὺς πόδας μικροὺς στενοὺς ἀνάρθρους ἔχουσιν, ἡδίους τε ἰδεῖν ἢ ῥωμαλεωτέρους, μαλακοὶ τὰ περὶ τὴν ψυχήν· ἀναφέρεταιἐπὶ τὸ θῆλυγένος.
Those who have small, narrow, ill-jointed feet, more pleasant to look at than vigorous, are soft in their souls; this is referred to the female sex.
§6.2Οἷς τῶν ποδῶν οἱ δάκτυλοι καμπύλοι, ἀναιδεῖς, καὶ ὅσοις ὄνυχες καμπύλαι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τοὺς ὄρνεις τοὺς γαμψώνυχας.
Those the toes of whose feet are curved, and those whose nails are curved, are shameless; this is referred to the birds of prey.
Οἷς τῶν ποδῶν τὰ δάκτυλα συμπεφραγμένα ἐστί, δειμαλέοι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τοὺς ὄρτυγας τοὺς στενόποδας τῶν λιμναίων.
Those the toes of whose feet are compressed together are cowardly; this is referred to the narrow-footed quails of the marshes.
§6.3Ὅσοις τὰ περὶ τὰ σφυρὰ νευρώδη τε καὶ διηρθρωμένα ἐστίν, εὔρωστοι τὰς ψυχάς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν γένος.
Those for whom the parts about the ankles are sinewy and well-jointed are vigorous in their souls; this is referred to the male sex.
Ὄσοι τὰ σφυρὰ σαρκώδεις καὶ ἄναρθροι, μαλακοὶ τὰς ψυχάς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ θῆλυ γένος.
Those whose ankles are fleshy and ill-jointed are soft in their souls; this is referred to the female sex.
§6.4Ὅσοι τὰς κνήμας ἔχουσιν ἠρθρωμένας τε καὶ νευρώδεις καὶ ἐρρωμένας, εὔρωστοι τὴν ψυχήν· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν.
Those who have their shins well-jointed, sinewy, and strong are vigorous in their soul; this is referred to the male.
Ὅσοι δὲ τὰς κνήμας λεπτὰς νευρώδεις ἔχουσι, λάγνοι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τοὺς ὄρνιθας.
Those who have thin, sinewy shins are lustful; this is referred to birds.
Ὅσοι τὰς κνήμας περιπλέους σφόδρα ἔχουσιν, οἶον ὀλίγου διαρρηγνυμένας, βδελυροὶ καὶ ἀναιδεῖς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὴν ἐπιπρέπειαν.
Those who have very full shins, as if almost bursting, are abominable and shameless; this is referred to appearance.
§6.5Οἱ γονύκροτοι κίναιδοι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὴν ἐπιπρέπειαν.
Those who are knock-kneed are effeminate; this is referred to appearance.
Οἱ τοὺς μηροὺς ὁστώδεις καὶ νευρώδεις ἔχοντες εὔρωστοι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν.
Those who have bony and sinewy thighs are vigorous; this is referred to the male.
Οἱ δὲ τοὐς μηροὺς ὁστώδεις καὶ περιπλέους ἔχοντες μαλακοί· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ θῆλυ.
Those who have bony but full thighs are soft; this is referred to the female.
§6.6Ὅσοι δὲ πῦγα ὀξεῖαν ὀστώδη ἔχουσιν, εὔρωστοι, ὅσοι δὲ σαρκώδη πίονα ἔχουσι, μαλακοί, Ὄσοι δὲ ἔχουσιν ὀλίγην σάρκα, οἶον ἀπωμοργμένα, κακοήθεις· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τοὺς πιθήκους.
Those who have a sharp, bony rump are vigorous; those who have a fleshy, fat one are soft; those who have little flesh, as if wiped away, are mischievous; this is referred to apes.
§6.7Οἱ ζωνοὶ φιλόθηροι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τοὺς λέοντας καὶ τοὺς κύνας. Ἴδοι δ' ἄν τις καὶ τῶν κυνῶν τοὺς φιλοθηροτάτους ζωνοὺς ὄντας.
Those who are slender-waisted are fond of hunting; this is referred to lions and dogs; and one might see that the most hunting-loving of dogs are slender-waisted.
Οἷς τὰ περὶ τὴν κοιλίαν λαπαρά, εὔρωστοι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν.
Those for whom the parts about the belly are hollow are vigorous; this is referred to the male.
§6.8Ὅσοι δὲ μὴ λαπαροί, μαλακοί· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὴν ἐπιπρέπειαν.
Those who are not hollow are soft; this is referred to appearance.
Ὅσοις τὸ νῶτον εὐμέγεθές τε καὶ ἐρρωμένον, εὔρωστοι τὰς ψυχάς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν.
Those whose back is large and strong are vigorous in their souls; this is referred to the male.
Ὅσοι δὲ τὸ νῶτον στενὸν καὶ ἀσθενὲς ἔχουσι, μαλακοί· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ θῆλυ.
Those who have a narrow and weak back are soft; this is referred to the female.
§6.9Οἱ εὔπλευροι εὔρωστοι τὰς ψυχάς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν.
Those who are well-ribbed are vigorous in their souls; this is referred to the male.
Οἱ δὲ ἄπλευροι μαλακοὶ τὰς ψυχάς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ θῆλυ.
Those who are flat-ribbed are soft in their souls; this is referred to the female.
Ὅσοι δὲ ἐκ τῶν πλευρῶν περίογκοί εἰσιν, οἷον πεφυσημένοι, λάλοι καὶ μωρολόγοι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τοὺς βοῦς ἢ ἐπὶ τοὺς βατράχους.
Those who are swollen out from their sides, as if blown up, are talkative and foolish-talking; this is referred to oxen or frogs.
§6.10Ὅσοι δὲ τὸ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὀμφαλοῦ πρὸς τὸ ἀκροστήθιον μεῖζον ἔχουσιν ἢ τὸ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀκροστηθίου πρὸς τὸν τράχηλον, βοροὶ καὶ ἀναίσθητοι, βοροὶ μὲν ὅτι τὸ τεύχος μέγα ἔχουσιν ᾦ δέχονται τὴν τροφήν, ἀναίσθητοι δὲ ὅτι στενώτερον τὸν τόπον ἔχουσιν αἱ αἰσθήσεις, συνενωμένον τε τῷ τὴν τροφὴν δεχομένῳ, ὥστε τὰς αἰσθήσεις βεβαρύνθαι διὰ τὰς τῶν σιτίων πληρώσειςἢ ἐνδείας.
Those who have the distance from the navel to the chest greater than that from the chest to the neck are gluttonous and insensible: gluttonous because they have a large vessel in which they receive food, and insensible because they have the place of the senses narrower, and closely joined with that which receives the food, so that the senses are weighted down by the fullness or lack of food.
§6.11Ὅσοι δὲ τὰστηθία ἔχουσι μεγάλα καὶ διηρθρωμένα, εὔρωστοι τὰς ψυχάς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν.
Those who have their breasts large and well-jointed are vigorous in their souls; this is referred to the male.
§6.12Ὅσοι δὲ τὸ μετάφρενον ἔχουσι μέγα καὶ εὔσαρκον καὶ ἀρθρῶδες, εὔρωστοι τὰς ψυχάς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄρρεν.
Those who have the upper back large, fleshy, and well-jointed are vigorous in their souls; this is referred to the male.
Ὅσοι δ' ἀσθενὲς καὶ ἄσαρκον καὶ ἄναρθρον, μαλακοὶ τὰς ψυχάς· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ θῆλυ.
Those who have it weak, lean, and ill-jointed are soft in their souls; this is referred to the female.
Ὅσοις δὲ τὸ μετάφρενον κυρτόν ἐστι σφόδρα οἵ τε ὦμοι πρὸς τὸ στῆθος συνηγμένοι, κακοήθεις· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τὴν ἐπιπρέπειαν, ὅτι ἀφανίζεται τὰ ἔμπροσθεν προσήκοντα φαίνεσθαι.
Those whose upper back is very curved and whose shoulders are drawn together toward the chest are mischievous; this is referred to appearance, because the parts in front which ought to appear are hidden.
§6.13Ὅσοι δὲ τὸ μετάφρενον ὕπτιον ἔχουσι, χαῦνοι καὶ ἀνόητοι· ἀναφέρεται ἐπὶ τοὺς ἵππους.
Those who have the upper back hollow are conceited and foolish; this is referred to horses.
Ἐπεὶ δὲοὔτε κυρτὸν σφόδρα δεῖ εἶναι οὔτε κοῖλον, τὸ μέσον ζητητέον τοῦ εὖ πεφυκότος.
Since it ought to be neither very curved nor hollow, the mean of the well-formed must be sought.
