And their wives, as the danger was already near, abandoning the decorum of staying at home, ran to the precincts of the gods, wailing and prostrating themselves before the wooden images; and every sacred place was full of the lamentation and supplication of women, especially the temple of Capitoline Jupiter.
Thereupon, one of them, preeminent in birth and dignity, and being then at the prime of her life, and most capable of thinking what was necessary, Valeria by name, the sister of Publicola who had co-liberated the city from the kings, moved by a certain divine inspiration, stood upon the highest step of the temple, and having called together the other women, first comforted and encouraged them, urging them not to be dismayed by the danger; then she promised that there was one hope of safety for the city, and that this was left in them alone, if they should be willing to do what was necessary.
καί τις εἶπεν ἐξ αὐτῶν· καὶ τί πράττουσαι ἂν ἡμεῖς αἱ γυναῖκες διασῶσαι δυνηθείημεν τὴν πατρίδα τῶν ἀνδρῶν ἀπειρηκότων;
And one of them said: "And by doing what could we women be able to save our country, when the men have given up?
What is this so great strength in us, the weak and wretched?" Valeria said: "It is not in need of arms and hands—for nature has released us from these—but of goodwill and speech." When a shout arose after this and all begged her to make clear what the assistance was, she spoke to them: "Wearing this squalid and unadorned raiment, and taking the other women with us, and bringing our children along, let us go to the house of Veturia, the mother of Marcius; and placing the children before her knees, let us entreat her with tears, pitying both us who are the causes of no evil and our country which is in extreme danger, to go forth to the camp of the enemies, bringing both her grandsons, their mother, and all of us; for let us follow her, bringing our children along; and then, having become a suppliant of her child, to urge and entreat him to commit nothing irreparable against his country.
For if she wails and entreats, some pity and gentle reasoning will enter into the man.
He does not have so hard and invulnerable a heart as to endure his mother prostrating herself at his knees."
