The generals of the enemy, learning that the strongholds in their rear were also being occupied and no longer having good hopes concerning the provisions from home being safely conveyed to them, decided to dislodge the Romans from the hill before they could strengthen it with a palisade and a trench.
Sextus, one of them, taking the cavalry, rode at full speed as if the Roman cavalry would not withstand him.
But since the Roman horsemen bravely withstood those who attacked, he held out for a time, retreating and charging again; but when the nature of the ground gave great advantages to those who already held the heights, while bringing nothing but many wounds and endless toil to those attacking from below, and further, another force of elite men from the infantry phalanx, whom Postumius had sent close behind, arrived to aid the Romans, being unable to accomplish anything further, he withdrew his cavalry to the rampart.
And the Romans, firmly holding the position, manifestly strengthened their guard.
After this action, Mamilius and Sextus and their men decided not to allow much time to intervene, but to decide the issue by a swift battle.
And to the dictator of the Romans, who at first held the policy of ending the war without a fight and had expected above all to do this because of the inexperience of the opposing generals, it then seemed best to proceed to the contest.
For some messengers carrying letters from the Volscians to the generals of the Latins were captured by the horsemen guarding the roads, which revealed that many forces would come to their alliance within about three days, and others again from the Hernicians.
These, then, were the things that brought upon their leaders the necessity of a speedy battle-array, though they had not previously chosen it.
And when the signals for battle were raised on both sides, they both advanced into the intervening ground and drew up their forces as follows: Sextus Tarquinius was posted on the left wing of the Latins, Octavius Mamilius on the right, and the post in the center was held by Titus, the other of Tarquinius' sons, where also the Roman deserters and exiles were stationed.
All the cavalry, being divided into three parts, was assigned to both wings and to those drawn up in the center of the phalanx.
Of the Roman army, the left wing was held by the master of the horse, Titus Aebutius, opposite to Octavius Mamilius, and the right by Titus Virginius the consul, holding a position opposite to Sextus Tarquinius; the center of the phalanx the dictator Postumius himself filled, in order to come to close quarters with Titus Tarquinius and the exiles around him.
The number of the forces that came together for the battle-array from each army was, on the side of the Romans, twenty-four thousand infantry lacking three hundred, and a thousand cavalry; on the side of the Latins, with their allies, about forty thousand infantry and three thousand cavalry.
