§4.47.1τοιαύτῃ καταδρομῇ τοῦ Τύρνου χρησαμένου καὶ τῶν πολλῶν σφόδρα κινηθέντων ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις αἰτησάμενος εἰς ἀπολογίαν ὁ Ταρκύνιος τὴν ἐπιοῦσαν ἡμέραν καὶ λαβών, ὡς ὁ σύλλογος διελύθη, παρακαλέσας τοὺς ἀναγκαιοτάτους ἐσκόπει μετʼ ἐκείνων, τίνα χρηστέον τοῖς πράγμασι τρόπον.
When Turnus had made such an attack, and the multitude was greatly moved by his words, Tarquinius, having asked for the following day for his defense and obtained it, as the assembly was dissolved, called together his closest associates and considered with them in what manner he should deal with the situation.
οἱ μὲν οὖν ἄλλοι τοὺς λόγους, οὓς ἦν αὐτῷ λεκτέον ἐπὶ τῆς ἀπολογίας, ὑπετίθεντο καὶ τοὺς τρόπους, οἷς ἔδει τὸ πλῆθος ἀποθεραπεύειν, ἀπελογίζοντο.
The others, on their part, suggested the speeches which he ought to make in his defense, and calculated the means by which he must appease the multitude.
αὐτὸς δʼ ὁ Ταρκύνιος τούτων μὲν οὐδενὸς ἔφη δεῖν τοῖς πράγμασιν, ἰδίαν δὲ γνώμην ἀπεδείκνυτο μὴ τὰ κατηγορηθέντα λύειν, ἀλλʼ §4.47.2αὐτὸν τὸν κατηγορήσαντα ἀναιρεῖν.
But Tarquinius himself said that the situation required none of these things, and declared his own opinion to be not to refute the accusations, but to do away with the accuser himself.
ἐπαινεσάντων δὲ τὴν γνώμην ἁπάντων συνταξάμενος μετʼ αὐτῶν τὰ κατὰ τὴν ἐπίθεσιν πράγματι ἐπεχείρησεν ἥκιστα δυναμένῳ πεσεῖν εἰς πρόνοιαν ἀνθρωπίνην καὶ φυλακήν.
When all approved of this opinion, having arranged with them the details of the attack, he undertook a design least capable of falling under human foresight and precaution.
τῶν γὰρ παρακομιζόντων τά θʼ ὑποζύγια καὶ τὴν ἀποσκευὴν τοῦ Τύρνου θεραπόντων τοὺς πονηροτάτους ἐξευρὼν καὶ διαφθείρας χρήμασιν ἔπειθεν ὑπὸ νύκτα ξίφη πολλὰ παρʼ αὐτοῦ λαβόντας εἰσενεγκεῖν εἰς τὴν κατάλυσιν τοῦ δεσπότου καὶ ἀποθέσθαι κρύψαντας ἐν τοῖς σκευοφόροις.
For having found out the most unprincipled of the servants who were transporting Turnus' beasts of burden and baggage, and having corrupted them with money, he persuaded them to receive many swords from him by night, carry them into their master's lodging, and put them away, hiding them in the baggage-carriers.
§4.47.3τῇ δʼ ἑξῆς ἡμέρᾳ συναχθείσης τῆς ἐκκλησίας παρελθὼν ὑπὲρ μὲν τῶν κατηγορηθέντων βραχεῖαν ἔλεγεν εἶναι τὴν ἀπολογίαν καὶ δικαστὴν ἁπάντων ἐποιεῖτο τῶν ἐγκλημάτων αὐτὸν τὸν κατήγορον.
On the following day, when the assembly was gathered, he came forward and said that his defense against the accusations was brief, and made the accuser himself the judge of all the charges.
οὑτοσὶ γάρ, ἔφη, Τύρνος, ὦ σύνεδροι, τούτων ὧν νυνί μου κατηγορεῖ πάντων δικαστὴς γενόμενος αὐτὸς ἀπέλυσέ με, ὅτε τὴν θυγατέρα τὴν ἐμὴν ἐβούλετο λαβεῖν γυναῖκα.
"For this Turnus here, O councillors," he said, "having himself become the judge of all these things for which he now accuses me, acquitted me when he wished to take my daughter as his wife.
§4.47.4ἐπεὶ δʼ ἀπηξιώθη τῶν γάμων κατὰ τὸ εἰκός· τίς γὰρ ἂν τῶν νοῦν ἐχόντων Μαμίλιον τὸν εὐγενέστατόν τε καὶ κράτιστον Λατίνων ἀπεώσατο, τοῦτον δὲ κηδεστὴν ἠξίωσε λαβεῖν, ὃς οὐδʼ εἰς τρίτον πάππον ἀνενεγκεῖν ἔχει τὸ γένος; ἀγανακτῶν ἐπὶ τούτῳ νῦν ἥκει μου κατηγορῶν.
But when he was rejected from the marriage, as was natural—for who of those who have sense would have rejected Mamilius, the most noble and powerful of the Latins, and chosen to take this man as a relative by marriage, who cannot trace his descent even to a great-grandfather?—he, being resentful at this, has now come accusing me.
ἔδει δʼ αὐτόν, εἰ μὲν ᾔδει με τοιοῦτον ὄντα, οἷον νῦν αἰτιᾶται, μὴ προθυμεῖσθαι λαβεῖν τότε πενθερόν· εἰ δὲ χρηστὸν ἐνόμιζεν, ὅτε τὴν θυγατέρα με ᾐτεῖτο, μηδὲ νῦν ὡς πονηροῦ κατηγορεῖν.
But he ought, if he knew me to be such a man as he now accuses me of being, not to have been eager to take me as a father-in-law then; or if he thought me good when he was asking for my daughter, not to accuse me as a wicked man now.
§4.47.5καὶ περὶ μὲν ἐμαυτοῦ τοσαῦτα λέγω· ὑμῖν δʼ, ὦ σύνεδροι, κινδύνων τὸν μέγιστον τρέχουσιν οὐ περὶ ἐμοῦ σκεπτέον ἐστὶ νυνί, πότερα χρηστὸς ἢ πονηρός εἰμι· τουτὶ γὰρ ἐξέσται καὶ μετὰ ταῦθʼ ὑμῖν σκοπεῖν· ἀλλὰ περὶ τῆς ὑμῶν αὐτῶν ἀσφαλείας καὶ περὶ τῆς τῶν πατρίδων ἐλευθερίας.
And about myself I say this much; but you, O councillors, who are running the greatest of risks, must not consider about me now, whether I am good or wicked—for it will be possible for you to examine this even after this—but about your own safety and about the liberty of your countries.
ἐπιβουλεύεσθε γὰρ οἱ κορυφαιότατοι τῶν ἐν ταῖς πόλεσι καὶ τὰ κοινὰ πράττοντες ὑπὸ τοῦ καλοῦ τούτου δημαγωγοῦ, ὃς παρεσκεύασταί τε τοὺς ἐπιφανεστάτους ὑμῶν ἀποκτείνας ἐπιθέσθαι τῇ Λατίνων ἀρχῇ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦθʼ §4.47.6ἥκει.
For you, who are the foremost in the cities and manage public affairs, are being plotted against by this fine demagogue, who has made preparations, after killing the most illustrious of you, to attack the rule over the Latins, and for this purpose he has come.
ταῦτα δʼ οὐκ εἰκάζων, ἀλλʼ ἀκριβῶς ἐπιστάμενος λέγω μηνύσεώς μοι γενομένης ἐν τῇ παρελθούσῃ νυκτὶ ὑπό τινος τῶν μετεσχηκότων τῆς συνωμοσίας.
And I say these things not guessing, but knowing them accurately, information having been given to me during the past night by one of those who participated in the conspiracy.
τεκμήριον δʼ ὑμῖν παρέξομαι τῶν λόγων ἔργον ἀναμφίλεκτον, ἐὰν ἐθελήσητε ἐλθεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν κατάλυσιν αὐτοῦ, τὰ κεκρυμμένα ἐν αὐτῇ δείξας ὅπλα.
And I will provide you with an undeniable fact as a proof of my words, if you will be willing to go to his lodging, by showing the weapons hidden in it."
