§3.27.1τετταράκοντα δʼ ὄντων σταδίων τῶν μεταξὺ Φιδήνης τε καὶ Ῥώμης ἐλάσας τὸν ἵππον ἀνὰ κράτος παρῆν ἐπὶ τὸν χάρακα καὶ πρὶν ἡμέραν λαμπρὰν γενέσθαι καλέσας Μάρκον Ὁράτιον τὸν περιλειφθέντα ἐκ τῶν τριδύμων καὶ δοὺς αὐτῷ τῶν ἱππέων καὶ τῶν πεζῶν τοὺς ἀκμαιοτάτους ἐκέλευσεν ἐπὶ τὴν Ἀλβανῶν πόλιν ἄγειν, παρελθόντα δʼ ἐντὸς τείχους ὡς φίλον ὄντα, ὅταν ὑποχειρίους λάβῃ τοὺς ἔνδον, καθελεῖν τὴν πόλιν ἄχρι θεμελίων μηθενὸς μήτε ἰδίου μήτε κοινοῦ κατασκευάσματος φειδόμενον ἔξω τῶν ἱερῶν, ἀνθρώπων δὲ μηθένα μήτε κτείνειν μήτε ἀδικεῖν, §3.27.2ἀλλὰ πάντας ἐᾶν ἔχειν τὰ ἑαυτῶν.
Since the distance between Fidenae and Rome was forty stades, he rode his horse at full speed and arrived at the camp; and before it was bright daylight, he summoned Marcus Horatius, the survivor of the triplets, and giving him the most vigorous of the cavalry and infantry, ordered him to lead them to the city of the Albans, and when he had entered within the wall as a friend, and when he had got those inside into his power, to demolish the city to its foundations, sparing no building, whether private or public, except the temples, but to kill or wrong no person, but to allow everyone to keep their own possessions.
ἐκπέμψας δὲ τοῦτον ἐκάλει τοὺς ταξιάρχους καὶ τοὺς λοχαγοὺς καὶ τὰ δόξαντα τῇ βουλῇ διασαφήσας φυλακὴν ἐκ τούτων καθίσταται περὶ τὸ σῶμα· καὶ μετʼ οὐ πολὺ παρῆν ὁ Ἀλβανὸς ὡς ἐπὶ νικήματι κοινῷ γεγηθὼς καὶ τῷ Τύλλῳ συνηδόμενος.
Having sent him off, he summoned the commanders and captains, and having explained to them the decrees of the senate, he formed a bodyguard for his person from among them; and not long after, the Alban arrived, rejoicing as if for a common victory and congratulating Tullus.
ὁ δὲ Τύλλος ἀπόρρητον τὴν γνώμην ἔτι φυλάσσων ἐπῄνει τε αὐτὸν καὶ μεγάλων ἄξιον ἀπέφαινε δωρεῶν παρεκάλει τε γράψαντα καὶ τὰ τῶν ἄλλων Ἀλβανῶν ὀνόματα τῶν ἐπιφανές τι κατὰ τὴν μάχην διαπραξαμένων φέρειν ὡς αὐτόν, ἵνα κἀκεῖνοι τὴν ἐκ τῶν ἐπινικίων ἀπενέγκωνται μοῖραν.
But Tullus, still keeping his purpose secret, praised him and declared him worthy of great rewards, and urged him to write down and bring to him the names of the other Albans also who had performed any conspicuous deed in the battle, in order that they too might carry off their share of the triumphal rewards.
§3.27.3ὁ μὲν δὴ περιχαρὴς γενόμενος τοὺς πιστοτάτους τῶν φίλων, οἷς ἐχρήσατο τῶν ἀπορρήτων βουλευμάτων συνεργοῖς, εἰσγράψας εἰς δέλτον ἐπιδίδωσιν.
And Mettius, being overjoyed, wrote down the names of the most faithful of his friends whom he had employed as accomplices in his secret plans, and presented the tablet.
ὁ δὲ τῶν Ῥωμαίων βασιλεὺς εἰς ἐκκλησίαν ἅπαντας ἀποθεμένους τὰ ὅπλα ἐκάλει· συνιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὸν μὲν ἡγεμόνα τῶν Ἀλβανῶν ἅμα τοῖς ταξιάρχοις τε καὶ λοχαγοῖς παρʼ αὐτὸ τὸ βῆμα ἐκέλευσεν ἑστάναι, ἐχομένους δὲ τούτων τοὺς ἄλλους Ἀλβανοὺς ταχθέντας ἐκκλησιάζειν, μετὰ δὲ τοὺς Ἀλβανοὺς τὸ λοιπὸν τῶν συμμάχων πλῆθος· ἔξωθεν δὲ πάντων περιέστησε Ῥωμαίους, ἐν οἷς ἦσαν οἱ γενναιότατοι, ξίφη κρύπτοντας ὑπὸ ταῖς περιβολαῖς.
Then the king of the Romans summoned all to an assembly after they had laid aside their arms; and as they came together, he ordered the leader of the Albans, together with his commanders and captains, to stand close to the tribunal itself, and next to them the other Albans, drawn up in order, to attend the assembly, and after the Albans the rest of the multitude of the allies; and on the outside of all he stationed the Romans, among whom were the bravest, hiding swords under their cloaks.
