§11.1ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Ἑταίραν δέ τις παραλαβὼν πέντε δραχμὰς τὸ μίσθωμα δοὺς καθεύδει ἀποστραφεὶς δακρύων καὶ στένων;
TRYPHAENA Does anyone, having taken a courtesan and paid five drachmas as her fee, sleep with his back turned, weeping and groaning?
ἀλλ’ οὔτε πέπωκας ἡδέως, οἶμαι, οὔτε δειπνῆσαι μόνος ἠθέλησας· ἔκλαες γὰρ καὶ παρὰ τὸ δεῖπνον, ἑώρων γάρ·
But you didn't even drink with pleasure, I think, nor did you want to dine alone; for you were weeping even during dinner, for I saw you.
καὶ νῦν δὲ οὐ διαλέλοιπας ἀναλύζων ὥσπερ βρέφος.
And even now you have not stopped sobbing like a baby.
ταῦτα οὖν, ὦ Χαρμίδη, τίνος ἕνεκα ποιεῖς;
So, Charmides, for what reason are you doing this?
μὴ ἀποκρύψῃ με, ὡς ἂν καὶ τοῦτο ἀπολαύσω τῆς νυκτὸς ἀγρυπνήσασα μετὰ σοῦ.
Do not hide it from me, so that I may at least get this reward from staying awake with you through the night.
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Ἔρως με ἀπόλλυσιν, ὦ Τρύφαινα, καὶ οὐκέτ' ἀντέχω πρὸς τὸ δεινόν.
CHARMIDES Love is destroying me, Tryphaena, and I can no longer hold out against this terrible pain.
ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Ἀλλ' ὅτι μὲν οὐκ ἐμοῦ ἐρᾷς, δῆλον· οὐ γὰρ ἂν ἔχων με ἠμέλεις καὶ ἀπωθοῦ περιπλέκεσθαι θέλουσαν καὶ τέλος διετείχιζες τὸ μεταξὺ ἡμῶν τῷ ἱματίῳ δεδιὼς μὴ ψαύσαιμί σου.
TRYPHAENA Well, it is clear that you are not in love with me; for if you were, you would not have ignored me while having me, and pushed me away when I wanted to embrace you, and finally built a wall between us with your cloak, fearing lest I should touch you.
τίς δὲ ὅμως ἐκείνη ἐστίν, εἰπέ· τάχα γὰρ ἄν τι καὶ συντελέσαιμι πρὸς τὸν ἔρωτα, οἶδα γὰρ ὡς χρὴ τὰ τοιαῦτα διακονεῖσθαι.
But tell me anyway who she is; for perhaps I might even contribute something to your love, since I know how to serve in such matters.
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Καὶ μὴν οἶσθα καὶ πάνυ ἀκριβῶς αὐτὴν κἀκείνη σέ· οὐ γὰρ ἀφανὴς ἑταίρα ἐστίν.
CHARMIDES Indeed, you know her very well, and she knows you; for she is no obscure courtesan.
§11.2ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Εἰπὲ τοὔνομα, ὦ Χαρμίδη.
TRYPHAENA Tell me her name, Charmides.
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Φιλημάτιον, ὦ Τρύφαινα.
CHARMIDES Philemation, Tryphaena.
ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Ὁποτέραν λέγεις; δύο γάρ εἰσι·
TRYPHAENA Which of the two do you mean?
τὴν ἐκ Πειραιῶς, τὴν ἄρτι διακεκορευμένην, ἧς ἐρᾷ Δαμύλος ὁ τοῦ νῦν στρατηγοῦντος υἱός, ἢ τὴν ἑτέραν, ἣν Παγίδα ἐπικαλοῦσιν;
For there are two: the one from Piraeus, who has recently lost her virginity, whom Damylus, the son of the current general, loves; or the other one, whom they call Pagis?
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Ἐκείνην, καὶ ἑάλωκα ὁ κακοδαίμων καὶ συνείλημμαι πρὸς αὐτῆς.
CHARMIDES That one, and I, wretched man, have been caught and trapped by her.
ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Οὐκοῦν δι’ ἐκείνην ἔκλαες;
TRYPHAENA So it was because of her that you were weeping?
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Καὶ μάλα.
CHARMIDES Indeed so.
ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Πολὺς δὲ χρόνος ἔστι σοι ἐρῶντι ἢ νεοτελής τις εἶ;
TRYPHAENA Have you been in love for a long time, or are you a novice?
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Οὐ νεοτελής, ἀλλὰ μῆνες ἑπτὰ σχεδὸν ἀπὸ Διονυσίων, ὅτε πρώτως εἶδον αὐτην.
CHARMIDES Not a novice, but nearly seven months since the Dionysia, when I first saw her.
ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Εἶδες δὲ ὅλην ἀκριβῶς, ἢ τὸ πρόσωπον μόνον καὶ ὅσα τοῦ σώματος φανερὰ [ἃ] εἶδες Φιληματίου, καὶ ὡς χρῆν γυναῖκα πέντε καὶ τετταράκοντα ἔτη γεγονυῖαν ἤδη;
TRYPHAENA Did you see her whole body clearly, or only her face and whatever parts of Philemation’s body were visible, and such as is expected of a woman who is already forty-five years old?
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Καὶ μὴν ἐπόμνυται δύο καὶ εἴκοσιν ἐς τὸν ἐσόμενον Ἐλαφηβολιῶνα τελέσειν.
CHARMIDES Yet she swears that she will complete twenty-two years in the coming Elaphebolion.
§11.3ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Σὺ δὲ ποτέροις πιστεύσειας ἄν, τοῖς ἐκείνης ὅρκοις ἢ τοῖς σεαυτοῦ ὀφθαλμοῖς;
TRYPHAENA And which would you believe, her oaths or your own eyes?
ἐπίσκεψαι γὰρ ἀκριβῶς ὑποβλέψας ποτὲ τοὺς κροτάφους αὐτῆς, ἔνθα μόνον τὰς αὐτῆς τρίχας ἔχει· τὰ δὲ ἄλλα φενάκη βαθεῖα.
For look closely sometime, glancing up at her temples, where alone she has her own hair; all the rest is a thick wig.
παρὰ δὲ τοὺς κροτάφους ὁπόταν ἀσθενήσῃ τὸ φάρμακον, ᾧ βάπτεται, ὑπολευκαίνεται τὰ πολλά.
And near her temples, whenever the dye with which it is colored fades, it turns mostly grey.
καίτοι τί τοῦτο;
Yet what of that?
βίασαί ποτε καὶ γυμνὴν αὐτὴν ἰδεῖν.
Force her sometime to let you see her naked.
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Οὐδεπώποτέ μοι πρὸς τοῦτο ἐνέδωκεν.
CHARMIDES She has never yielded to me in this.
ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Εἰκότως· ἠπίστατο γὰρ μυσαχθησόμενόν σε τὰς λεύκας.
TRYPHAENA Naturally; for she knew you would be disgusted by her white spots.
ὅλη δὲ ἀπὸ τοῦ αὐχένος ἐς τὰ γόνατα παρδάλει ἔοικεν.
She looks like a leopard all over from her neck to her knees.
ἀλλὰ σὺ ἐδάκρυες τοιαύτῃ μὴ συνών;
But were you weeping because you were not with such a woman?
ἦ που τάχα καὶ ἐλύπει σε καὶ ὑπερεώρα;
Surely she also caused you pain and looked down on you?
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Ναί, ὦ Τρύφαινα, καίτοι τοσαῦτα παρ' ἐμοῦ λαμβάνουσα.
CHARMIDES Yes, Tryphaena, even though she received so much from me.
καὶ νῦν ἐπειδὴ χιλίας αἰτούσῃ οὐκ εἶχον διδόναι ῥᾳδίως ἅτε ὑπὸ πατρὶ φειδομένῳ τρεφόμενος, Μοσχίωνα ἐσδεξαμένη ἀπέκλεισέ με, ἀνθ' ὧν λυπῆσαι καὶ αὐτὸς ἐθέλων αὐτὴν σὲ παρείληφα
ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Μὰ τὴν Ἀφροδίτην οὐκ ἂν ἧκον, εἴ μοι προεῖπέ τις ὡς ἐπὶ τούτοις παραλαμβανοίμην, λυπῆσαι ἄλλην, καὶ ταῦτα Φιλημάτιον τὴν σορόν.
And now, when she asked for a thousand drachmas and I was not easily able to give them, since I am supported by a stingy father, she let Moschion in and shut me out; in return for which, wishing to hurt her myself too, I have brought you here.
ἀλλ’ ἄπειμι, καὶ γὰρ ἤδη τρίτον τοῦτο ᾖσεν ἁλεκτρυών.
TRYPHAENA By Aphrodite, I would not have come if someone had told me beforehand that I was being brought for these purposes, to vex another woman, and that woman Philemation, the coffin!
§11.4ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Μὴ σύ γε οὕτως ταχέως, ὦ Τρύφαινα·
Well, I am going, for the cock has already crowed for the third time.
εἰ γὰρ ἀληθῆ ἐστιν ἃ φῂς περὶ Φιληματίου, τὴν πηνήκην καὶ ὅτι βάπτεται καὶ τὸ τῶν ἄλλων ἀλφῶν, οὐδὲ προσβλέπειν ἂν ἔτι ἐδυνάμην αὐτῇ.
CHARMIDES Don't go so quickly, Tryphaena; for if what you say about Philemation is true—the wig, and that she dyes her hair, and the matter of her other white spots—I wouldn't even be able to look at her anymore.
ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΑ
Ἐροῦ τὴν μητέρα, εἴ ποτε λέλουται μετ' αὐτῆς· περὶ γὰρ τῶν ἐτῶν κἂν ὁ πάππος διηγήσεταί σοι, εἴ γε ζῇ ἔτι.
TRYPHAENA Ask your mother if she has ever bathed with her; and as for her age, even your grandfather would tell you, if indeed he is still alive.
ΧΑΡΜΙΔΗΣ
Οὐκοῦν ἐπεὶ τοιαύτη ἐκείνη, ἀφῃρήσθω μὲν ἤδη τὸ διατείχισμα, περιβάλλωμεν δὲ ἀλλήλους καὶ φιλῶμεν καὶ ἀληθῶς συνῶμεν· Φιλημάτιον δὲ πολλὰ χαιρέτω.
CHARMIDES Well then, since she is such a woman, let the barrier now be removed, and let us embrace each other and kiss and be together in truth; and as for Philemation, let her go hang.
