Θρύπτῃ, ὦ Λυσία, πρὸς ἐμέ;
IOESSA Are you playing hard to get with me, Lysias?
And well you might, because I have never asked you for money, nor have I ever shut you out when you came, saying "there is someone else inside," nor have I forced you to cheat your father or steal from your mother to bring me something, as the other women do; but from the very beginning I welcomed you without fee, without contribution. You know how many lovers I turned away—Theocles, who is now prytanis, and Pasion the shipowner, and your classmate Melissus, even though his father had recently died and he was the master of his estate.
Yet I held you alone as my Phaon, neither looking at anyone else nor admitting anyone except you.
For I, foolish girl, believed that the things you swore were true, and for this reason, devoted to you, I remained chaste like Penelope, while my mother screamed at me and complained to her friends.
But you, once you learned that you had me in your power, melting for you, just now you were playing with Lycaena before my eyes to pain me, and just now, lying down with me, you were praising Magidion the harpist.
And I weep at these things and realize that I am being insulted.
The other day when you, Thrason, and Diphilus were drinking together, the flute-girl Cymbalium was present, and Pyrallis, who is my enemy.
Though you knew this, as for Cymbalium, it did not concern me much that you kissed her five times—for you were insulting yourself by kissing such a woman—but you kept nodding to Pyrallis, and having drunk, you would show her the cup, and handing it back to the servant, you whispered in his ear, ordering him, unless Pyrallis asked, not to pour for anyone else.
Finally, biting off a piece of an apple, when you saw Diphilus occupied—for he was talking to Thrason—leaning forward, you aimed and threw it right into her bosom, not even trying to hide it from me.
And she, having kissed it, tucked it under her breast-band between her breasts.
§12.2ταῦτα οὖν τίνος ἕνεκα ποιεῖς;
For what reason, then, do you do these things?
τί σε ἢ μέγα ἢ μικρὸν ἐγὼ ἠδίκησα ἢ λελύπηκα;
In what have I wronged or pained you, great or small?
τίνα ἕτερον εἶδον;
What other man have I looked at?
οὐ πρὸς μόνον σὲ ζῶ;
Do I not live for you alone?
οὐ μέγα, ὦ Λυσία, τοῦτο ποιεῖς γύναιον ἄθλιον λυπῶν μεμηνὸς ἐπὶ σοί;
Do you not do a cruel thing, Lysias, in hurting a wretched woman who is madly in love with you?
Adrasteia is a goddess, and she sees such things.
And you too will soon be pained, if you hear something about me—that I lie dead, having either choked myself with a noose or fallen headlong into a well, or that I have found some other way of death, so that I may no longer trouble you by being seen.
You will triumph then, as if you had achieved a great and glorious deed.
τί με ὑποβλέπεις καὶ πρίεις τοὺς ὁδόντας;
Why do you look at me askance and gnash your teeth?
If you have some complaint, speak; let Pythias here judge between us.
τί τοῦτο;
What is this?
οὐδὲ ἀποκρινάμενος ἀπέρχῃ καταλιπών με;
Are you leaving without even answering, abandoning me?
ὁρᾷς, ὦ Πυθιάς, οἷα πάσχω ὑπὸ Λυσίου;
Do you see, Pythias, what I suffer at the hands of Lysias?
PYTHIAS Oh, what savagery, not even to be moved when she is weeping!
He is a stone, not a man.
But yet, if the truth must be told, Ioessa, you ruined him by loving him too much and making it obvious.
You should not have paid him so much attention; for men become arrogant when they perceive it.
Stop weeping, poor girl, and if you listen to me, shut him out once or twice when he comes; for you will see him burning with passion and truly driven mad in return.
IOESSA Oh, do not even say that, heaven forbid!
ἀποκλείσω Λυσίαν;
Shut out Lysias?
May he not desert me first!
PYTHIAS But he is coming back again.
IOESSA You have ruined us, Pythias!
Perhaps he heard you saying "shut him out."
