Οὐκέτι φοιτᾷ παρὰ σέ, ὦ Δροσί, τὸ μειράκιον ὁ Κλεινίας;
CHELIDONION Does the youth Cleinias no longer visit you, Drosis?
οὐ γὰρ ἑώρακα, πολὺς ἤδη χρόνος, αὐτὸν παρ' ὑμῖν.
For it has been a long time now since I saw him at your place.
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Οὐκέτι, ὦ Χελιδόνιον· ὁ γὰρ διδάσκαλος αὐτὸν εἶρξε μηκέτι μοι προσιέναι.
DROSIS No longer, Chelidonion; for his teacher has forbidden him from coming to me anymore.
ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ
Τίς οὗτος;
CHELIDONION Who is this?
μή τι τὸν παιδοτρίβην Διότιμον λέγεις;
You don't mean Diotimus the physical trainer, do you?
ἐπεὶ ἐκεῖνός γε φίλος ἐστίν.
Since he at least is a friend.
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Οὔκ, ἀλλ’ ὁ κάκιστα φιλοσόφων ἀπολούμενος Ἀρισταίνετος.
DROSIS No, but Aristaenetus, who of all philosophers deserves to perish most miserably.
ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ
Τὸν σκυθρωπὸν λέγεις, τὸν δασύν, τὸν βαθυπώγωνα, ὃς εἴωθε μετὰ τῶν μειρακίων περιπατεῖν ἐν τῇ Ποικίλῃ;
CHELIDONION Do you mean the sullen one, the hairy one with the deep beard, who is accustomed to walk with the youths in the Poikile?
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Ἐκεῖνόν φημι τὸν ἀλαζόνα, ὃν κάκιστα ἐπίδοιμι ἀπολούμενον, ἑλκόμενον τοῦ πώγωνος ὑπὸ δημίου.
DROSIS That is the charlatan I mean, whom I hope to see perish most miserably, dragged by his beard by the executioner.
§10.2ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ
Τί παθὼν δὲ ἐκεῖνος τοιαῦτα ἔπεισε τὸν Κλεινίαν;
CHELIDONION What possessed him to persuade Cleinias to do such things?
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Οὐκ οἶδα, ὦ Χελιδόνιον.
DROSIS I don't know, Chelidonion.
ἀλλ’ ὁ μηδέποτε ἀπόκοιτός μου γενόμενος ἀφ' οὗ γυναικὶ ὁμιλεῖν ἤρξατο—πρῶτον δὲ ὡμίλησέ μοι—τριῶν τούτων ἑξῆς ἡμερῶν οὐδὲ προσῆλθε τῷ στενωπῷ·
But he, who had never slept away from me since he began to associate with women—and he first associated with me—for these last three consecutive days has not even approached our lane.
ἐπεὶ δὲ ἠνιώμην—οὐκ οἶδα δὲ ὅπως τι ἔπαθον ἐπ' αὐτῷ—ἔπεμψα τὴν Νεβρίδα περισκεψομένην αὐτὸν ἢ ἐν ἀγορᾷ διατρίβοντα ἢ ἐν Ποικίλῃ·
Since I was distressed—and I don't know how I felt so affected because of him—I sent Nebris to look around for him, whether he was spending time in the marketplace or in the Poikile.
ἡ δὲ περιπατοῦντα ἔφη ἰδοῦσα μετὰ τοῦ Ἀρισταινέτου νεῦσαι πόρρω, ἐκεῖνον δὲ ἐρυθριάσαντα κάτω ὁρᾶν καὶ μηκέτι παρενεγκεῖν τὸν ὀφθαλμόν.
And she said that she saw him walking with Aristaenetus and beckoned from afar, but he blushed, looked down, and never turned his eyes toward her again.
εἶτ' ἐβάδιζον ἅμα ἐς τὴν Ἀκαδημίαν· ἡ δὲ ἄχρι τοῦ Διπύλου ἀκολουθήσασα, ἐπεὶ μηδ’ ὅλως ἐπεστράφη, ἐπανῆκεν οὐδὲν σαφὲς ἀπαγγεῖλαι ἔχουσα.
Then they walked together toward the Academy; she followed them as far as the Dipylon, but since he did not turn around at all, she came back with nothing clear to report.
πῶς με οἴει διάγειν τὸ μετὰ ταῦτα οὐκ ἔχουσαν εἰκάσαι ὅ τι μοι πέπονθεν ὁ μειρακίσκος;
How do you think I have been getting on after this, unable to guess what has happened to my young lad?
ἀλλὰ μὴ ἐλύπησά τι αὐτόν, ἔλεγον, ἤ τινος ἄλλης ἠράσθη μισήσας ἐμέ;
"Could I have offended him in some way?" I said, "or has he fallen in love with someone else, having grown to hate me?
ἀλλ’ ὁ πατὴρ διεκώλυσεν αὐτόν; πολλὰ τοιαῦτα ἡ ἀθλία ἔστρεφον.
Or has his father prevented him?" I, wretched girl, kept turning many such thoughts over in my mind.
ἤδη δὲ περὶ δείλην ὀψίαν ἧκέ μοι Δρόμων τὸ γραμμάτιον τουτὶ παρ' αὐτοῦ κομίζων.
But already late in the evening Dromon came to me bringing this letter from him.
ἀνάγνωθι λαβοῦσα, ὦ Χελιδόνιον· οἶσθα γὰρ δή που γράμματα.
Take it and read, Chelidonion, for surely you know how to read.
§10.3ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ
Φέρ' ἴδωμεν·
CHELIDONION Let me see.
τὰ γράμματα οὐ πάνυ σαφῆ, ἀλλὰ ἐπισεσυρμένα δηλοῦντα ἔπειξίν τινα τοῦ γεγραφότος.
The handwriting is not very clear, but scribbled, showing some haste on the part of the writer.
λέγει δέ “πῶς μὲν ἐφίλησά σε, ὦ Δροσί, τοὺς θεοὺς ποιοῦμαι μάρτυρας. ”
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Αἰαῖ τάλαν, οὐδὲ τὸ χαίρειν προσέγραψε.
It says: "How I have loved you, Drosis, I make the gods my witnesses." DROSIS Alas, poor me, he didn't even write "greetings" at the start.
ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ

CHELIDONION "And now, not out of hatred, but out of necessity, I part from you; for my father has handed me over to Aristaenetus to study philosophy with him, and he—for he has learned everything about our affairs—reproved me very sharply, saying it is unbecoming to associate with a courtesan, being the son of Architeles and Erasicleia; for it is much better to prefer virtue to pleasure." DROSIS May that babbling fool not live another season for teaching the youth such things!
ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ
“Ὥστε ἀνάγκη πείθεσθαι αὐτῷ· παρακολουθεῖ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς παραφυλάσσων, καὶ ὅλως οὐδὲ προσβλέπειν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ ἔξεστιν ὅτι μὴ ἐκείνῳ·
CHELIDONION "So I must obey him; for he follows closely, keeping watch over me, and in short, it is not permitted to look at anyone else but him.
εἰ δὲ σωφρονοῖμι καὶ πάντα πεισθείην αὐτῷ, ὑπισχνεῖται πάνυ εὐδαίμονα ἔσεσθαί με καὶ ἐνάρετον καταστήσεσθαι τοῖς πόνοις προγεγυμνασμένον.
If I am temperate and obey him in everything, he promises that I will be very happy and will be established in virtue, having been trained by hardships beforehand.
ταῦτά σοι μόλις ἔγραψα ὑποκλέψας ἐμαυτόν.

Τὰ μὲν ἄλλα ἡ ἀπὸ Σκυθῶν ῥῆσις, τὸ δὲ “μέμνησο Κλεινίου” ἔχει τινὰ ὑπόλοιπον ἐλπίδα.
CHELIDONION The rest of it is a message from the Scythians, but the "remember Cleinias" has some remaining hope.
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Κἀμοὶ οὕτως ἔδοξεν· ἀπόλλυμαι δ’ οὖν ὑπὸ τοῦ ἔρωτος.
DROSIS So it seemed to me too; but anyway, I am perishing from love.
ὁ μέντοι Δρόμων ἔφασκε παιδεραστήν τινα εἶναι τὸν Ἀρισταίνετον καὶ ἐπὶ προφάσει τῶν μαθημάτων συνεῖναι τοῖς ὡραιοτάτοις τῶν νέων καὶ ἰδίᾳ λογοποιεῖσθαι πρὸς τὸν Κλεινίαν ὑποσχέσεις τινὰς ὑπισχνούμενον ὡς ἰσόθεον ἀποφανεῖ αὐτόν.
However, Dromon said that Aristaenetus is a pederast, and on the pretext of studies, associates with the handsomest of the youths, and in private makes speeches to Cleinias, promising him certain things, as if he will show him to be equal to the gods.
ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀναγιγνώσκει μετ' αὐτοῦ ἐρωτικούς τινας λόγους τῶν παλαιῶν φιλοσόφων πρὸς τοὺς μαθητάς, καὶ ὅλος περὶ τὸ μειράκιόν ἐστιν.
Moreover, he reads with him certain erotic discourses of the ancient philosophers to their pupils, and is entirely devoted to the youth.
ἠπείλει δὲ καὶ τῷ πατρὶ τοῦ Κλεινίου κατερεῖν ταῦτα.
And he was threatening to expose these things to Cleinias' father as well.
ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ
Ἐχρῆν, ὦ Δροσί, γαστρίσαι τὸν Δρόμωνα.
CHELIDONION You should have bribed Dromon with food, Drosis.
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Ἐγάστρισα, καὶ ἄνευ δὲ τούτου ἐμός ἐστι· κέκνισται γὰρ κἀκεῖνος τῆς Νεβρίδος.
DROSIS I did satisfy his belly, and even without that he is mine; for he too is smitten with Nebris.
ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ
Θάρρει, πάντα ἔσται καλῶς.
CHELIDONION Take heart, everything will be fine.
ἐγὼ δὲ καὶ ἐπιγράψειν μοι δοκῶ ἐπὶ τοῦ τοίχου ἐν Κεραμεικῷ, ἔνθα ὁ Ἀρχιτέλης εἴωθε περιπατεῖν, Ἀρισταίνετος διαφθείρει Κλεινίαν, ὥστε καὶ ἐκ τούτου συνδραμεῖν τῇ παρὰ τοῦ Δρόμωνος διαβολῇ.
I am thinking of writing on the wall in the Kerameikos, where Architeles is accustomed to walk: Aristaenetus is corrupting Cleinias, so that this too may assist Dromon's slander.
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Πῶς δ’ ἂν λάθοις ἐπιγράψασα;
DROSIS But how could you write it without being caught?
ΧΕΛΙΔΟΝΙΟΝ
Τῆς νυκτός, Δροσί, ἄνθρακά ποθεν λαβοῦσα.
CHELIDONION By night, Drosis, taking charcoal from somewhere.
ΔΡΟΣΙΣ
Εὖ γε, συστράτευε μόνον, ὦ Χελιδόνιον, κατὰ τοῦ ἀλαζόνος Ἀρισταινέτου.
