§1.9καταλιπόντες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ ναῦν ἐφεύγομεν καὶ τοῖς ἀπολειφθεῖσιν διηγούμεθα ἐλθόντες τά τε ἄλλα καὶ τῶν ἑταίρων τὴν ἀμπελομιξίαν.
Leaving them behind, we fled to the ship, and upon arriving, we described to those who had been left behind, among other things, the grapevine-copulation of our companions.
καὶ δὴ λαβόντες ἀμφορέας τινὰς καὶ ὑδρευσάμενοί τε ἅμα καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ποταμοῦ οἰνισάμενοι καὶ αὐτοῦ πλησίον ἐπὶ τῆς ᾐόνος αὐλισάμενοι ἕωθεν ἀνήχθημεν οὐ σφόδρα βιαίῳ πνεύματι.
And indeed, having taken some amphorae, and at the same time both drawing water and supplying ourselves with wine from the river, and having encamped near it on the shore, at dawn we put out to sea with a not very violent wind.
περὶ μεσημβρίαν δὲ οὐκέτι τῆς νήσου φαινομένης ἄφνω τυφὼν ἐπιγενόμενος καὶ περιδινήσας τὴν ναῦν καὶ μετεωρίσας ὅσον ἐπὶ σταδίους τριακοσίους οὐκέτι καθῆκεν εἰς τὸ πέλαγος, ἀλλʼ ἄνω μετέωρον ἐξηρτημένην ἄνεμος ἐμπεσὼν τοῖς ἱστίοις ἔφερεν κολπώσας τὴν ὀθόνην.
About midday, when the island was no longer visible, suddenly a whirlwind came upon us, spun the ship around, and lifted it up to about three hundred stades, and no longer let it down into the sea, but suspended aloft, a wind fell upon the sails and carried it, swelling the canvas.
§1.10ἑπτὰ δὲ ἡμέρας καὶ τὰς ἴσας νύκτας ἀεροδρομήσαντες, ὀγδόῃ καθορῶμεν γῆν τινα μεγάλην ἐν τῷ ἀέρι καθάπερ νῆσον, λαμπρὰν καὶ σφαιροειδῆ καὶ φωτὶ μεγάλῳ καταλαμπομένην·
Having run through the air for seven days and as many nights, on the eighth day we saw a certain large land in the air like an island, bright and spherical and illuminated by a great light.
προσενεχθέντες δὲ αὐτῇ καὶ ὁρμισάμενοι ἀπέβημεν, ἐπισκοποῦντες δὲ τὴν χώραν εὑρίσκομεν οἰκουμένην τε καὶ γεωργουμένην.
Having been carried to it and having come to anchor, we disembarked, and examining the country, we found it inhabited and cultivated.
ἡμέρας μὲν οὖν οὐδὲν αὐτόθεν καθεωρῶμεν, νυκτὸς δὲ ἐπιγενομένης ἐφαίνοντο ἡμῖν καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ νῆσοι πλησίον, αἱ μὲν μείζους, αἱ δὲ μικρότεραι, πυρὶ τὴν χροιὰν προσεοικυῖαι, καὶ ἄλλη δέ τις γῆ κάτω, καὶ πόλεις ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ ποταμοὺς ἔχουσα καὶ πελάγη καὶ ὕλας καὶ ὄρη.
During the day, indeed, we saw nothing from there, but when night came on, there appeared to us many other islands nearby, some larger, some smaller, resembling fire in color, and also another land below, containing cities and rivers and seas and forests and mountains.
ταύτην οὖν τὴν καθʼ ἡμᾶς οἰκουμένην εἰκάζομεν.
We guessed, therefore, that this was our inhabited world.
§1.11δόξαν δὲ ἡμῖν καὶ ἔτι πορρωτέρω προελθεῖν, συνελήφθημεν τοῖς Ἱππογύποις παρʼ αὐτοῖς καλουμένοις ἀπαντήσαντες.
Having decided to go even further forward, we were arrested, having met those who are called Hippogypoi among them.
οἱ δὲ Ἱππόγυποι οὗτοί εἰσιν ἄνδρες ἐπὶ γυπῶν μεγάλων ὀχούμενοι καὶ καθάπερ ἵπποις τοῖς ὀρνέοις χρώμενοι· μεγάλοι γὰρ οἱ γῦπες καὶ ὡς ἐπίπαν τρικέφαλοι.
These Hippogypoi are men riding upon large vultures and using the birds just like horses; for the vultures are large and generally three-headed.
μάθοι δʼ ἄν τις τὸ μέγεθος αὐτῶν ἐντεῦθεν· νεὼς γὰρ μεγάλης φορτίδος ἱστοῦ ἕκαστον τῶν πτερῶν μακρότερον καὶ παχύτερον φέρουσι.
One might learn their size from this: for they carry feathers, each of which is longer and thicker than the mast of a large merchant ship.
τούτοις οὖν τοῖς Ἱππογύποις προστέτακται περιπετομένοις τὴν γῆν, εἴ τις εὑρεθείη ξένος, ἀνάγειν ὡς τὸν βασιλέα· καὶ δὴ καὶ ἡμᾶς συλλαβόντες ἀνάγουσιν ὡς αὐτόν.
It has been commanded, therefore, to these Hippogypoi, as they fly around the land, if any stranger should be found, to lead him up to the king; and indeed, having arrested us, they led us up to him.
ὁ δὲ θεασάμενος καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς στολῆς εἰκάσας, Ἕλληνες ἆρα, ἔφη, ὑμεῖς, ὦ ξένοι; συμφησάντων δέ, Πῶς οὖν ἀφίκεσθε, ἔφη, τοσοῦτον ἀέρα διελθόντες; καὶ ἡμεῖς τὸ πᾶν αὐτῷ διηγούμεθα·
He, having looked at us and having guessed from our clothing, said, "Are you indeed Greeks, O strangers?" And when we agreed, he said, "How then did you arrive, having traversed so much air?" And we described everything to him.
καὶ ὃς ἀρξάμενος τὸ καθʼ αὑτὸν ἡμῖν διεξῄει, ὡς καὶ αὐτὸς ἄνθρωπος ὢν τοὔνομα Ἐνδυμίων ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμετέρας γῆς καθεύδων ἀναρπασθείη ποτὲ καὶ ἀφικόμενος βασιλεύσειε τῆς χώρας· εἶναι δὲ τὴν γῆν ἐκείνην ἔλεγε τὴν ἡμῖν κάτω φαινομένην σελήνην.
And he, beginning from the start, related his own story to us, how he too, being a human named Endymion, was once snatched away from our earth while sleeping, and having arrived, became king of this country; and he said that that land was the moon, which appeared to us below.
ἀλλὰ θαρρεῖν τε παρεκελεύετο καὶ μηδένα κίνδυνον ὑφορᾶσθαι· πάντα γὰρ ἡμῖν παρέσεσθαι ὧν δεόμεθα.
But he exhorted us to be of good courage and to suspect no danger; for everything that we needed would be provided for us.
§1.12ἢν δὲ καὶ κατορθώσω, ἔφη, τὸν πόλεμον ὃν ἐκφέρω νῦν πρὸς τοὺς τὸν ἥλιον κατοικοῦντας, ἁπάντων εὐδαιμονέστατα παρʼ ἐμοὶ καταβιώσεσθε. καὶ ἡμεῖς ἠρόμεθα τίνες εἶεν οἱ πολέμιοι καὶ τὴν αἰτίαν τῆς διαφορᾶς·
"And if I also succeed in," he said, "the war which I am now waging against the inhabitants of the sun, you will live out your lives with me most happily of all." And we asked who the enemies were and the cause of the dispute.
Ὁ δὲ Φαέθων, φησίν, ὁ τῶν ἐν τῷ ἡλίῳ κατοικούντων βασιλεύς — οἰκεῖται γὰρ δὴ κἀκεῖνος ὥσπερ καὶ ἡ σελήνη — πολὺν ἤδη πρὸς ἡμᾶς πολεμεῖ χρόνον.
"Phaethon," he says, "the king of the inhabitants of the sun — for that place too is indeed inhabited, just like the moon — has already been waging war against us for a long time.
ἤρξατο δὲ ἐξ αἰτίας τοιαύτης. τῶν ἐν τῇ ἀρχῇ τῇ ἐμῇ ποτε τοὺς ἀπορωτάτους συναγαγὼν ἐβουλήθην ἀποικίαν ἐς τὸν Ἑωσφόρον στεῖλαι, ὄντα ἔρημον καὶ ὑπὸ μηδενὸς κατοικούμενον·
And it began from such a cause: having once gathered the poorest of those in my empire, I wished to send a colony to the Morning Star, which was deserted and inhabited by no one.
ὁ τοίνυν Φαέθων φθονήσας ἐκώλυσε τὴν ἀποικίαν κατὰ μέσον τὸν πόρον ἀπαντήσας ἐπὶ τῶν Ἱππομυρμήκων.
Phaethon, therefore, being envious, prevented the colony, having met us in the middle of the passage upon the Hippomyrmekes.
τότε μὲν οὖν νικηθέντες — οὐ γὰρ ἦμεν ἀντίπαλοι τῇ παρασκευῇ — ἀνεχωρήσαμεν· νῦν δὲ βούλομαι αὖθις ἐξενεγκεῖν τὸν πόλεμον καὶ ἀποστεῖλαι τὴν ἀποικίαν.
At that time, indeed, having been defeated — for we were not a match in preparation — we retreated; but now I wish to wage war again and to send the colony.
ἢν οὖν ἐθέλητε, κοινωνήσατέ μοι τοῦ στόλου, γῦπας δὲ ὑμῖν ἐγὼ παρέξω τῶν βασιλικῶν ἕνα ἑκάστῳ καὶ τὴν ἄλλην ὅπλισιν· αὔριον δὲ ποιησόμεθα τὴν ἔξοδον. οὕτως, ἔφην ἐγώ, γιγνέσθω, ἐπειδή σοι δοκεῖ.
If, therefore, you are willing, join with me in the expedition, and I will provide you with vultures, one of the royal ones for each of you, and the rest of the armor; and tomorrow we shall make our departure." "So let it be," I said, "since it seems good to you."
