§5.80.1τούτων δʼ ἡμῖν διευκρινημένων λείπεται περὶ τῶν ἐπιμιχθέντων ἐθνῶν τοῖς Κρησὶ διελθεῖν.
These matters having been cleared up by us, it remains to discuss the nations that mingled with the Cretans.
ὅτι μὲν οὖν πρῶτοι κατῴκησαν τὴν νῆσον οἱ προσαγορευθέντες μὲν Ἐτεόκρητες, δοκοῦντες δʼ ὑπάρχειν αὐτόχθονες, προειρήκαμεν· μετὰ δὲ τούτους πολλαῖς γενεαῖς ὕστερον Πελασγοὶ πλανώμενοι διὰ τὰς συνεχεῖς στρατείας καὶ μεταναστάσεις καταντήσαντες εἰς τὴν Κρήτην μέρος τῆς νήσου κατῴκησαν.
Now, we have already stated that those called Eteocretans were the first to inhabit the island, being considered to be indigenous; but many generations after them, the Pelasgians, wandering because of continuous military campaigns and migrations, arrived in Crete and inhabited a part of the island.
§5.80.2τρίτον δὲ γένος φασὶ τῶν Δωριέων παραβαλεῖν εἰς τὴν νῆσον ἡγουμένου Τεκτάμου τοῦ Δώρου· τούτου δὲ τοῦ λαοῦ μέρος τὸ μὲν πλέον ἀθροισθῆναι λέγουσιν ἐκ τῶν περὶ τὸν Ὄλυμπον τόπων, τὸ δέ τι μέρος ἐκ τῶν κατὰ τὴν Λακωνικὴν Ἀχαιῶν διὰ τὸ τὴν ἀφορμὴν τὸν Δῶρον ἐκ τῶν περὶ Μαλέαν τόπων ποιῆσαι.
And they say that a third race, that of the Dorians, arrived at the island under the leadership of Tectamus, the son of Dorus; and of this people, they say that the greater part was assembled from the regions around Olympus, and a certain part from the Achaeans of Laconia, because Dorus made his starting point from the regions around Malea.
τέταρτον δὲ γένος συμμιγῆναί φασιν εἰς τὴν Κρήτην μιγάδων βαρβάρων τῶν διὰ τὸν χρόνον ἐξομοιωθέντων τῇ διαλέκτῳ τοῖς ἐγχωρίοις Ἕλλησι.
And they say that a fourth race mingled in Crete, a mixed body of barbarians who in the course of time became like the local Greeks in their dialect.
§5.80.3μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα τοὺς περὶ Μίνω καὶ Ῥαδάμανθυν ἰσχύσαντας ὑπὸ μίαν ἀγαγεῖν συντέλειαν τὰ ἔθνη τὰ κατὰ τὴν νῆσον.
And after these things, those around Minos and Rhadamanthys, having gained power, brought the nations throughout the island under a single political organization.
τὸ δὲ τελευταῖον μετὰ τὴν κάθοδον τῶν Ἡρακλειδῶν Ἀργεῖοι καὶ Λακεδαιμόνιοι πέμποντες ἀποικίας ἄλλας τέ τινας νήσους ἔκτισαν καὶ ταύτης τῆς νήσου κατακτησάμενοι πόλεις τινὰς ᾤκησαν ἐν αὐταῖς· περὶ ὧν τὰ κατὰ μέρος ἐν τοῖς ἰδίοις χρόνοις ἀναγράψομεν.
And finally, after the return of the Heracleidae, the Argives and Lacedaemonians sent out colonies and founded certain other islands, and having acquired some cities of this island, they settled in them; concerning which we shall write in detail in their proper times.
§5.80.4ἐπεὶ δὲ τῶν τὰ Κρητικὰ γεγραφότων οἱ πλεῖστοι διαφωνοῦσι πρὸς ἀλλήλους, οὐ χρὴ θαυμάζειν ἐὰν μὴ πᾶσιν ὁμολογούμενα λέγωμεν· τοῖς γὰρ τὰ πιθανώτερα λέγουσι καὶ μάλιστα πιστευομένοις ἐπηκολουθήσαμεν, ἃ μὲν Ἐπιμενίδῃ τῷ θεολόγῳ προσσχόντες, ἃ δὲ Δωσιάδῃ καὶ Σωσικράτει καὶ Λαοσθενίδᾳ.
Since most of those who have written about Cretan history disagree with one another, one should not wonder if we do not state things agreed upon by all; for we have followed those who state the more probable things and are most believed, relying in some matters on Epimenides the theologian, and in others on Dosiadas, Sosicrates, and Laosthenidas.
