Since we have discussed Crete sufficiently, we shall now attempt to speak of Lesbos.
For this island was inhabited in ancient times by several races, many migrations having taken place in it.
For when it was deserted, the Pelasgians were the first to occupy it in some such manner as follows.
Xanthus, the son of Triopas, ruling over the Pelasgians from Argos, and having occupied a certain part of the land of Lycia, at first lived there and ruled over the Pelasgians who had followed him; but later, having crossed over to Lesbos which was deserted, he divided the land among his people, and named the island Pelasgia after those who inhabited it, though before that time it was called Issa.
But seven generations later, when the flood of Deucalion's time occurred and many people perished, it happened that Lesbos also was laid waste because of the great rains.
And after this, Macareus, having arrived at it and observed the beauty of the land, settled in it.
This Macareus was the son of Crinacus the son of Zeus, as Hesiod and some of the other poets say, and lived in Olenus in what was then called Ias, but is now called Achaea.
And he had people gathered under him, some being Ionians, and others having streamed together from all kinds of other nations.
And at first he inhabited Lesbos, but after this, growing more and more powerful because of the excellence of the island and his own fair-mindedness and justice, he acquired the neighboring islands and divided their land, which was deserted.
And around these times, Lesbos, the son of Lapithes the son of Aeolus the son of Hippotes, having sailed according to a certain oracle with settlers to the aforementioned island, and having married Methymna, the daughter of Macareus, settled there in common; and having become a famous man, he named the island Lesbos after himself and called the people Lesbians.
And daughters were born to Macareus, among others Mytilene and Methymna, from whom the cities received their names.
And Macareus, undertaking to make the neighboring islands his own, sent out a colony first to Chios, committing the leadership to one of his own children; and after this he sent out another, named Cydrolaus, to Samos, who settled in it, distributed the island by lot, and ruled over it; and having colonized Cos as the third island, he appointed Neandros as its king; and next he sent Leucippus to Rhodes with a large number of settlers, whom those inhabiting Rhodes gladly received because of the scarcity of men, and they inhabited the island in common.
