§2.31.1τῶν δὲ πλανήτων ἴδιον ἕκαστον ἔχειν δρόμον καὶ διηλλαγμένως καὶ ποικίλως χρῆσθαι τοῖς τάχεσι καὶ τῇ τῶν χρόνων διαιρέσει.
And they say that each of the planets has its own course, and uses its speeds and divisions of time in different and varied ways.
πλεῖστα δὲ πρὸς τὰς γενέσεις τῶν ἀνθρώπων συμβάλλεσθαι τούτους τοὺς ἀστέρας ἀγαθά τε καὶ κακά· διὰ δὲ τῆς τούτων φύσεώς τε καὶ θεωρίας μάλιστα γινώσκειν τὰ συμβαίνοντα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις.
And these stars contribute the most, both good and bad, to the births of men, and through the nature and observation of these stars they especially know the things that happen to men.
§2.31.2πεποιῆσθαι δέ φασι προρρήσεις ἄλλοις τε βασιλεῦσιν οὐκ ὀλίγοις καὶ τῷ καταπολεμήσαντι Δαρεῖον Ἀλεξάνδρῳ καὶ τοῖς μετὰ ταῦτα βασιλεύσασιν Ἀντιγόνῳ τε καὶ Σελεύκῳ τῷ Νικάτορι, ἐν ἅπασι δὲ τοῖς ῥηθεῖσιν εὐστοχηκέναι δοκοῦσιν·
And they say that they have made predictions to not a few other kings, and to Alexander who conquered Darius, and to those who ruled as kings after these, Antigonus and Seleucus Nicator; and in all the things spoken they seem to have hit the mark.
ὑπὲρ ὧν ἡμεῖς τὰ κατὰ μέρος ἐν οἰκειοτέροις ἀναγράψομεν καιροῖς.
Concerning these we shall record the details at more appropriate times.
§2.31.3προλέγουσι δὲ καὶ τοῖς ἰδιώταις τὰ μέλλοντα συμβαίνειν οὕτως εὐστόχως ὥστε τοὺς πειραθέντας θαυμάζειν τὸ γινόμενον καὶ μεῖζον ἢ κατʼ ἄνθρωπον ἡγεῖσθαι.
And they also predict to ordinary private citizens the things that are going to happen so accurately that those who have experienced it marvel at what happens and consider it greater than what belongs to man.
§2.31.4μετὰ δὲ τὸν ζῳδιακὸν κύκλον εἴκοσι καὶ τέτταρας ἀφορίζουσιν ἀστέρας, ὧν τοὺς μὲν ἡμίσεις ἐν τοῖς βορείοις μέρεσι, τοὺς δʼ ἡμίσεις ἐν τοῖς νοτίοις τετάχθαι φασί, καὶ τούτων τοὺς μὲν ὁρωμένους τῶν ζώντων εἶναι καταριθμοῦσι, τοὺς δʼ ἀφανεῖς τοῖς τετελευτηκόσι προσωρίσθαι νομίζουσιν, οὓς δικαστὰς τῶν ὅλων προσαγορεύουσιν. §2.31.5ὑπὸ πάντα δὲ τὰ προειρημένα τὴν σελήνην φέρεσθαι λέγουσιν, ἔγγιστα μὲν τῆς γῆς οὖσαν διὰ τὴν βαρύτητα, διαπορευομένην δʼ ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ χρόνῳ τὸν ἑαυτῆς δρόμον, οὐ διὰ τὴν ὀξύτητα τῆς φορᾶς, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὴν βραχύτητα τοῦ κύκλου.
And beyond the zodiac circle they set apart twenty-four stars, of which they say half are ordered in the northern parts, and half in the southern parts; and of these, they number the visible ones as belonging to the living, and they believe the invisible ones have been assigned to the deceased, whom they address as "judges of all things." And they say that the moon is carried below all the aforementioned things, being closest to the earth on account of its weight, and passing through its own course in the shortest time, not because of the speed of its movement, but because of the shortness of its circle.
§2.31.6ὅτι δὲ τὸ φῶς ἀλλότριον ἔχει καὶ διότι τὰς ἐκλείψεις ποιεῖται διὰ τὸ σκίασμα τῆς γῆς παραπλήσια λέγουσι τοῖς Ἕλλησι.
And that it has a borrowed light, and that it makes its eclipses because of the shadow of the earth, they say things very similar to the Greeks.
περὶ δὲ τῆς κατὰ τὸν ἥλιον ἐκλείψεως ἀσθενεστάτας ἀποδείξεις φέροντες οὐ τολμῶσι προλέγειν οὐδʼ ἀκριβῶς ὑπὲρ ταύτης περιγράφειν τοὺς χρόνους.
But concerning the eclipse of the sun, bringing forward very weak proofs, they do not dare to predict it, nor to define its times accurately.
§2.31.7περὶ δὲ τῆς γῆς ἰδιωτάτας ἀποφάσεις ποιοῦνται, λέγοντες ὑπάρχειν αὐτὴν σκαφοειδῆ καὶ κοίλην, καὶ πολλὰς καὶ πιθανὰς ἀποδείξεις εὐποροῦσι περί τε ταύτης καὶ περὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν κατὰ τὸν κόσμον· ὑπὲρ ὧν τὰ κατὰ μέρος διεξιέναι τῆς ὑποκειμένης ἱστορίας ἀλλότριον εἶναι νομίζομεν.
And concerning the earth, they make very peculiar statements, saying that it is boat-shaped and hollow, and they are well supplied with many and plausible proofs both concerning this and concerning the other things in the universe; concerning which we think that to go through the details is foreign to the history at hand.
§2.31.8τοῦτο μέντοι γε διαβεβαιώσαιτʼ ἄν τις προσηκόντως ὅτι Χαλδαῖοι μεγίστην ἕξιν ἐν ἀστρολογίᾳ τῶν ἁπάντων ἀνθρώπων ἔχουσι καὶ διότι πλείστην ἐπιμέλειαν ἐποιήσαντο ταύτης τῆς θεωρίας.
This, however, one might properly assert, that the Chaldaeans have the greatest skill in astrology of all men, and that they have paid the greatest attention to this study.
§2.31.9περὶ δὲ τοῦ πλήθους τῶν ἐτῶν, ἐν οἷς φασι τὴν θεωρίαν τῶν κατὰ τὸν κόσμον πεποιῆσθαι τὸ σύστημα τῶν Χαλδαίων, οὐκ ἄν τις ῥᾳδίως πιστεύσειεν· ἐτῶν γὰρ ἑπτὰ καὶ τετταράκοντα μυριάδας καὶ τρεῖς ἐπὶ ταύταις χιλιάδας εἰς τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρου διάβασιν γεγονέναι καταριθμοῦσιν, ἀφʼ ὅτου τὸ παλαιὸν ἤρξαντο τῶν ἄστρων τὰς παρατηρήσεις ποιεῖσθαι.
But concerning the multitude of years in which they say the system of the Chaldaeans has made the observation of the things in the universe, one would not easily believe; for they count up forty-seven ten-thousands and three thousand years in addition to these to have occurred down to the crossing of Alexander, from the time when they began of old to make their observations of the stars.
§2.31.10καὶ περὶ μὲν Χαλδαίων ἀρκεσθησόμεθα τοῖς ῥηθεῖσιν, ἵνα μὴ μακρότερον ἀποπλανώμεθα τῆς οἰκείας ἱστορίας· περὶ δὲ τῆς Ἀσσυρίων βασιλείας ὡς ὑπὸ Μήδων κατελύθη προειρηκότες ἐπάνιμεν ὅθεν ἐξέβημεν.
And concerning the Chaldaeans, we shall be satisfied with what has been said, lest we wander too far from our own history; and having already spoken about the Assyrian kingdom, how it was destroyed by the Medes, we shall return to the point from which we digressed.
