And some people bring forward also the following reason for the deification of the animals.
For they say that when humans were first gathered together from their beast-like life, at first they ate one another and waged war, the stronger always overpowering the weaker; but after this, those who were deficient in strength, being taught by their own interest, gathered together and made for themselves a sign from among the animals that were afterwards consecrated; and since those who were always in fear ran together to this sign, the group became not easily despised by those who attacked them. And since the others did the very same thing, the multitudes were divided into groups, and the animal which had become the cause of safety for each group received honors equal to those of the gods, as having bestowed the greatest benefits; wherefore even to the present times the tribes of the Egyptians remain divided and honor the animals that were consecrated among them from the beginning.
And in general they say that the Egyptians, more than all other men, are gratefully disposed toward everything that benefits them, believing that the repayment of gratitude to benefactors is the greatest aid to life; for it is clear that all men will be eager to bestow benefits especially upon those in whose keeping they see that gratitude will be most beautifully treasured up. And for the same reasons the Egyptians seem to prostrate themselves before and honor their own kings as being in truth gods, on the one hand believing that they have obtained supreme authority over all not without some divine providence, and on the other hand considering that those who wish and are able to bestow the greatest benefits participate in the divine nature. Now concerning the consecrated animals, even if we have written at too great length, we have at least clarified those of the customs of the Egyptians that are most admired.
