§17.37.1τῶν δὲ βασιλέων Δαρεῖος μὲν κατὰ κράτος ἡττημένος εἰς φυγὴν ὥρμησεν καὶ μεταλαμβάνων ἄλλον ἐξ ἄλλου τῶν ἀρίστων ἵππων κατὰ κράτος ἤλαυνε, διαφυγεῖν σπεύδων τὰς Ἀλεξάνδρου χεῖρας καὶ τῶν ἄνω σατραπειῶν ἅψασθαι προαιρούμενος· §17.37.2Ἀλέξανδρος δὲ μετὰ τῆς ἑταιρικῆς ἵππου καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἀρίστων ἱππέων ἐποιεῖτο τὸν διωγμόν, σπεύδων ἐγκρατὴς γενέσθαι τοῦ Δαρείου.
Of the kings, Darius, having been utterly defeated, set out in flight, and changing from one of his finest horses to another, rode at full speed, hastening to escape the hands of Alexander and choosing to reach the upper satrapies; on the other hand, Alexander with the companion cavalry and the other finest horsemen made the pursuit, hastening to capture Darius.
διανύσας δὲ σταδίους διακοσίους ἀνέκαμψεν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν περὶ μέσας νύκτας, τοῖς δὲ λουτροῖς θεραπεύσας τὸν ἐκ τῆς κακοπαθείας κόπον ἐτρέπετο πρὸς ἄνεσιν καὶ δειπνοποιίαν.
But having covered two hundred stades, he returned to the camp around midnight, and having relieved the fatigue from his hardship with baths, he turned to relaxation and dinner.
§17.37.3πρὸς δὲ τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ τὴν μητέρα τοῦ Δαρείου προσελθών τις ἀπήγγειλεν ὅτι πάρεστιν Ἀλέξανδρος ἀπὸ τοῦ διωγμοῦ, τὸν Δαρεῖον ἐσκυλευκώς.
At that time, someone came to the wife and mother of Darius and reported that Alexander was back from the pursuit, having despoiled Darius.
ἔνθα δὴ κραυγῆς μεγάλης καὶ κλαυθμοῦ περὶ τὰς γυναῖκας γενομένου καὶ τοῦ πλήθους τῶν αἰχμαλώτων διὰ τὴν ἀπαγγελίαν συμπενθοῦντος καὶ πολὺν ὀδυρμὸν προϊεμένου, πυθόμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ περὶ τὰς γυναῖκας πάθος ἐξέπεμψεν ἕνα τῶν φίλων Λεοννάτον καταπαύσοντα τὴν ταραχὴν καὶ παραμυθησόμενον τὰς περὶ τὴν Σισύγγαμβριν καὶ δηλώσοντα διότι Δαρεῖος μὲν ζῇ, ὁ δʼ Ἀλέξανδρος ἐπιμέλειαν αὐτῶν ποιήσεται τὴν προσήκουσαν καὶ διότι πρῲ βούλεται προσαγορεῦσαί τε αὐτὰς καὶ διὰ τῶν ἔργων ἀποδείξασθαι τὴν ἰδίαν φιλανθρωπίαν.
Thereupon, a great cry and wailing arose among the women, and the multitude of captives, sharing the grief because of the report, uttered a great lament. When the king learned of the distress of the women, he sent out one of his friends, Leonnatus, to quiet the disturbance, comfort Sisygambis and her women, and make it clear that Darius was alive, and that Alexander would show them proper care, and that in the morning he wished to address them and demonstrate his own benevolence through his deeds.
§17.37.4αἱ μὲν οὖν αἰχμαλωτίδες προσπεσούσης αὐταῖς παραδόξου καὶ παντελῶς ἀπηλπισμένης εὐτυχίας τόν τε Ἀλέξανδρον ὡς θεὸν προσεδέξαντο καὶ τῶν ὀδυρμῶν ἀπηλλάγησαν.
Thus the captive women, because an unexpected and utterly despaired of good fortune had befallen them, looked upon Alexander as a god and were freed from their laments.
§17.37.5ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς ἅμʼ ἡμέρᾳ λαβὼν ἕνα τῶν φίλων τὸν μάλιστα τιμώμενον Ἡφαιστίωνα παρῆλθε πρὸς τὰς γυναῖκας.
At daybreak, the king, having taken Hephaestion, the most honored of his friends, went in to the women.
ἐχόντων δʼ ἀμφοτέρων ἐσθῆτας μὲν ὁμοίας, τῷ μεγέθει δὲ καὶ κάλλει προέχοντος τοῦ Ἡφαιστίωνος ἡ Σισύγγαμβρις τοῦτον ὑπολαβοῦσα εἶναι τὸν βασιλέα προσεκύνησεν· διανευόντων δʼ αὐτῇ τῶν παρεστώτων καὶ τῇ χειρὶ δεικνύντων τὸν Ἀλέξανδρον ἡ μὲν Σισύγγαμβρις αἰδεσθεῖσα τὴν ἄγνοιαν πάλιν ἐξ ἀρχῆς προσεκύνει τὸν Ἀλέξανδρον,
Since both of them wore similar clothing, but Hephaestion excelled in height and beauty, Sisygambis, assuming him to be the king, prostrated herself before him; but when those standing by gestured to her and pointed to Alexander with their hands, Sisygambis, embarrassed by her mistake, prostrated herself anew before Alexander.
§17.37.6ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς ὑπολαβὼν εἶπεν μηδὲν φροντίσῃς, ὦ μῆτερ· καὶ γὰρ καὶ οὗτος Ἀλέξανδρός ἐστιν. οὐ μὴν ἀλλὰ τὴν πρεσβῦτιν μητέρα προσαγορεύσας διὰ τῆς φιλανθρωποτάτης προσηγορίας προεσήμαινε τοῖς προητυχηκόσι τὴν μέλλουσαν ἔσεσθαι φιλανθρωπίαν.
But the king, taking her up, said, "Do not worry, mother; for this one too is Alexander." Nay, but addressing the elderly mother by this most humane title, he prefigured to those who had previously met with misfortune the benevolence that was to come.
διαβεβαιωσάμενος δʼ αὐτὴν ὑπάρξειν δευτέραν μητέρα τοῖς ἔργοις εὐθὺς ἐκύρωσε τὴν διὰ τῶν λόγων ἐπαγγελίαν.
And having assured her that she would be his second mother, he immediately confirmed by his deeds the promise made through his words.
