But the most decent of the Macedonians, seeing the change of fortune, became sympathetic and pitied the misfortunes of the unlucky women, for whom their proper and grand circumstances had been far removed, while alien and hostile things were close at hand, urging them toward an unfortunate and shameful captivity.
And most of all, those present were moved to tears and sympathy by Darius's mother, his wife, his two daughters of marriageable age, and his son, who was still a young boy in age.
For in their case, the change of fortune and the magnitude of the unexpected misfortunes, lying before their eyes, naturally caused those who saw them to sympathize with the unfortunate family.
For on the one hand, they did not know concerning Darius whether he was alive and survived, or had perished along with the destruction of the others; and on the other hand, they saw armed enemy men plundering the tent, who were ignorant of who the captured women were, and because of their ignorance were committing many improper acts, and in short, they saw the whole of Asia captured along with themselves, and so far from being able to help the wives of the satraps who fell at their feet and begged for aid, they themselves were asking these women to assist them in their own misfortunes.
Meanwhile, the royal pages of the king, having taken possession of the tent of Darius, prepared his bath and dinner, and lighting many torches, awaited Alexander, so that when he returned from the pursuit and found all the preparations of Darius ready, he might take it as a good omen for his hegemony over the whole of Asia.
In the battle there died of the barbarians more than one hundred thousand infantry and no fewer than ten thousand cavalry, while of the Macedonians about three hundred infantry and about one hundred and fifty cavalry died.
Thus, the battle at Issus in Cilicia had such an end.
