§17.13.1τῆς δὲ πόλεως τοῦτον τὸν τρόπον καταλαμβανομένης πολλαὶ καὶ ποικίλαι περιστάσεις ἐντὸς τῶν τειχῶν ἐγίνοντο.
As the city was being captured in this manner, many and varied scenes of horror occurred within the walls.
οἱ μὲν γὰρ Μακεδόνες διὰ τὴν ὑπερηφανίαν τοῦ κηρύγματος πικρότερον ἢ πολεμικώτερον προσεφέροντο τοῖς Θηβαίοις καὶ μετὰ πολλῆς ἀπειλῆς ἐπιφερόμενοι τοῖς ἠτυχηκόσιν ἀφειδῶς ἀνῄρουν πάντας τοὺς περιτυγχάνοντας.
For the Macedonians, on account of the insolence of the proclamation, conducted themselves towards the Thebans with more bitterness than is usual in war, and charging upon the unfortunate people with many threats, they ruthlessly slew all whom they encountered.
§17.13.2οἱ δὲ Θηβαῖοι τὸ φιλελεύθερον τῆς ψυχῆς διαφυλάττοντες τοσοῦτον ἀπεῖχον τοῦ φιλοζωεῖν ὥστʼ ἐν ταῖς ἀπαντήσεσι συμπλέκεσθαι καὶ τὰς παρὰ τῶν πολεμίων ἐπισπᾶσθαι πληγάς· ἑαλωκυίας γὰρ τῆς πόλεως οὐδεὶς Θηβαίων ἑωράθη δεηθεὶς τῶν Μακεδόνων φείσασθαι τοῦ ζῆν οὐδὲ προσέπιπτον τοῖς τῶν κρατούντων γόνασιν ἀγεννῶς.
The Thebans, on their part, preserving their love of freedom, were so far from clinging to life that they would engage in close combat at every encounter and draw upon themselves the blows of the enemy; for after the city was taken, no Theban was seen begging the Macedonians to spare his life, nor did they fall ignobly at the knees of the victors.
§17.13.3ἀλλʼ οὔτε τὸ τῆς ἀρετῆς πάθος ἠλεεῖτο παρὰ τοῖς πολεμίοις οὔτε τὸ τῆς ἡμέρας μῆκος ἤρκει πρὸς τὴν ὠμότητα τῆς τιμωρίας, πᾶσα δὲ ἡ πόλις ἐξεφορεῖτο παιδίων ὁμοῦ καὶ παρθένων ἑλκομένων καὶ τὸ τῆς τεκούσης οἰκτρὸν ἐπιβοωμένων ὄνομα·
But neither was their display of valor pitied by the enemy, nor was the length of the day sufficient for the cruelty of their vengeance; the whole city was emptied, while children and maidens together were dragged away, crying out the pitiful name of their mothers.
Καθόλου δὲ τῶν οἴκων σὺν ὅλαις ταῖς συγγενείαις ἁρπαζομένων πάνδημος ὑπῆρχε τῆς πόλεως ἀνδραποδισμός.
In general, as households with all their kindred were plundered, there was a general enslavement of the city.
§17.13.4τῶν δὲ ὑπολελειμμένων Θηβαίων οἱ μὲν κατατετρωμένοι τὰ σώματα καὶ λιποψυχοῦντες συνεπλέκοντο τοῖς πολεμίοις, συναποθνήσκοντες τῇ τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἀπωλείᾳ, οἱ δὲ κλάσματι δόρατος ἐρειδόμενοι συνήντων τοῖς ἐπιφερομένοις καὶ διαγωνιζόμενοι τὸν ὕστατον ἀγῶνα προετίμων τὴν ἐλευθερίαν τῆς σωτηρίας.
Of the remaining Thebans, some, wounded in their bodies and faint, grappled with the enemy, dying together with the destruction of their foes, while others, leaning on a broken spear, met those who charged upon them and, fighting their last fight, preferred freedom to safety.
§17.13.5πολλοῦ δὲ φόνου γενομένου καὶ τῆς πόλεως κατὰ πάντα τόπον νεκρῶν πληρουμένης οὐκ ἦν ὅστις ἰδὼν οὐκ ἂν ἠλέησε τὰς τύχας τῶν ἀκληρούντων.
As a great slaughter took place and the city was filled with corpses in every place, there was no one who, seeing it, would not have pitied the fortunes of the luckless.
καὶ γὰρ τῶν Ἑλλήνων Θεσπιεῖς καὶ Πλαταιεῖς, ἔτι δʼ Ὀρχομένιοι καί τινες ἄλλοι τῶν ἀλλοτρίως διακειμένων πρὸς τοὺς Θηβαίους συστρατευόμενοι τῷ βασιλεῖ συνεισέπεσον εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ τὴν ἰδίαν ἔχθραν ἐν τοῖς τῶν ἠτυχηκότων ἀκληρήμασιν ἐναπεδείκνυντο.
For indeed, of the Greeks, the Thespians, the Plataeans, and also the Orchomenians and certain others of those hostilely disposed toward the Thebans, campaigning with the king, rushed into the city with him and manifested their own hatred in the misfortunes of the afflicted.
§17.13.6διὸ καὶ πάθη πολλὰ καὶ δεινὰ κατὰ τὴν πόλιν ὁρᾶν ἦν γινόμενα· Ἕλληνες γὰρ ὑφʼ Ἑλλήνων ἀνηλεῶς ἀνῃροῦντο καὶ συγγενεῖς ὑπὸ τῶν κατὰ γένος προσηκόντων ἐφονεύοντο, μηδεμίαν ἐντροπὴν τῆς ὁμοφώνου διαλέκτου παρεχομένης.
Therefore, many and terrible sufferings were to be seen happening throughout the city; for Greeks were ruthlessly slain by Greeks, and kinsmen were murdered by those related to them by race, with no respect being shown for their common tongue.
τέλος δὲ τῆς νυκτὸς ἐπικαταλαβούσης αἱ μὲν οἰκίαι διηρπάγησαν, τέκνα δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες καὶ οἱ γεγηρακότες εἰς τὰ ἱερὰ καταπεφευγότες μετὰ τῆς ἐσχάτης ὕβρεως ἀπήγοντο.
Finally, when night came on, the houses were plundered, and children, women, and the aged, who had fled to the temples, were dragged away with the utmost abuse.
