§17.12.1μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ὁ Ἀλέξανδρος ὁρῶν τοὺς μὲν Θηβαίους ἑτοίμως ὑπὲρ τῆς ἐλευθερίας ἀγωνιζομένους, τοὺς δὲ Μακεδόνας κάμνοντας τῇ μάχῃ προσέταξε τοὺς ἐπὶ τῆς ἐφεδρίας τεταγμένους διαδέξασθαι τὸν ἀγῶνα.
After this, Alexander, seeing the Thebans eagerly fighting for their liberty and the Macedonians failing in the battle, ordered those stationed in reserve to relieve them in the struggle.
οἱ μὲν οὖν Μακεδόνες ἄφνω προσπεσόντες τοῖς Θηβαίοις κατακόποις βαρεῖς ἐπέκειντο τοῖς πολεμίοις καὶ πολλοὺς ἀνῄρουν.
So the Macedonians, falling suddenly upon the exhausted Thebans, pressed heavily upon the enemy and slew many of them.
§17.12.2οὐ μὴν οἱ Θηβαῖοι τῆς νίκης ἐξεχώρουν, τοὐναντίον δὲ τῇ φιλοτιμίᾳ προαχθέντες πάντων τῶν δεινῶν κατεφρόνουν.
Yet the Thebans did not abandon hope of victory, but on the contrary, spurred on by their rivalry, they despised all terrors.
ἐπὶ τοσοῦτο δὲ ταῖς ἀνδραγαθίαις προέβησαν ὥστε βοᾶν ὅτι Μακεδόνες ὁμολογοῦσιν ἥττους εἶναι Θηβαίων, καὶ τῶν ἄλλων πάντων εἰωθότων ἐν ταῖς διαδοχαῖς τῶν πολεμίων δεδιέναι τοὺς ἀκεραίους τῶν ἐφεδρευόντων οὗτοι μόνοι τότε θρασύτεροι πρὸς τοὺς κινδύνους ὑπῆρξαν, ὅθʼ οἱ πολέμιοι διαδοχὴν ἐξέπεμψαν τοῖς καταπονουμένοις ὑπὸ τῆς κακοπαθείας.
Indeed, they advanced so far in their deeds of valor as to shout out that the Macedonians confessed themselves inferior to the Thebans; and while all others are accustomed to fear the fresh reserves during the relief of the enemy, these alone at that time became bolder in the face of danger, at the very moment when the enemy sent out a relief force for those who were worn out by hardship.
§17.12.3ἀνυπερβλήτου δὲ τῆς φιλοτιμίας γινομένης ὁ βασιλεὺς κατανοήσας τινὰ πυλίδα καταλελειμμένην ὑπὸ τῶν φυλάκων ἐξαπέστειλε Περδίκκαν μετὰ στρατιωτῶν ἱκανῶν καταλαβέσθαι ταύτην καὶ παρεισπεσεῖν εἰς τὴν πόλιν.
As their rivalry became unsurpassable, the king, noticing a certain postern gate that had been left unguarded by the sentries, dispatched Perdiccas with a sufficient number of soldiers to seize it and force an entry into the city.
§17.12.4τούτου δὲ ταχὺ τὸ προσταχθὲν ποιήσαντος οἱ μὲν Μακεδόνες διὰ τῆς πυλίδος παρεισέπεσον εἰς τὴν πόλιν, οἱ δὲ Θηβαῖοι καταπεπονηκότες μὲν τὴν πρώτην φάλαγγα τῶν Μακεδόνων, ἀντιταχθέντες δʼ εὐρώστως τῇ δευτέρᾳ εὐέλπιδες ἦσαν περὶ τῆς νίκης· ὡς δὲ κατενόησαν μέρος τῆς πόλεως κατειλημμένον, εὐθὺς ἀνεχώρησαν ἐντὸς τῶν τειχῶν.
When he quickly performed what had been commanded, the Macedonians forced their way through the postern into the city. The Thebans, on their part, having worn down the first phalanx of the Macedonians and vigorously opposed the second, had been full of hope for victory; but when they perceived that a part of the city had been captured, they immediately retreated within the walls.
§17.12.5ἅμα δὲ τούτοις πραττομένοις οἱ μὲν τῶν Θηβαίων ἱππεῖς ὁμοίως τοῖς πεζοῖς συνέτρεχον εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ πολλοὺς μὲν τῶν ἰδίων συμπατοῦντες διέφθειρον, αὐτοὶ δὲ τεταραγμένως εἰσίππευον εἰς τὴν πόλιν, ἐν δὲ ταῖς διεξόδοις καὶ τάφροις τοῖς οἰκείοις ὅπλοις περιπίπτοντες ἐτελεύτων.
While these things were taking place, the cavalry of the Thebans likewise rushed together with the infantry into the city, and trampling down many of their own men, they destroyed them; and riding in confusion into the city, they perished in the passages and trenches, falling upon their own weapons.
οἱ δὲ τὴν Καδμείαν φρουροῦντες ἐκχυθέντες ἐκ τῆς ἀκροπόλεως ἀπήντων τοῖς Θηβαίοις καὶ τεταραγμένοις ἐπιπεσόντες πολὺν ἐποίουν φόνον.
Meanwhile, those guarding the Cadmea, pouring out from the acropolis, met the Thebans and, falling upon them in their confusion, made a great slaughter.
