§15.93.1μετʼ ὀλίγον δὲ ὁ μὲν βασιλεὺς τῶν Περσῶν ἐτελεύτησεν ἄρξας ἔτη τρία πρὸς τοῖς τετταράκοντα, τὴν δὲ βασιλείαν διεδέξατο Ὦχος ὁ μετονομασθεὶς Ἀρταξέρξης, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἔτη τρία πρὸς τοῖς εἴκοσι· τοῦ γὰρ Ἀρταξέρξου καλῶς βεβασιλευκότος καὶ γενομένου παντελῶς εἰρηνικοῦ καὶ ἐπιτυχοῦς, τοὺς μετὰ τοῦτον βασιλεύοντας μετωνόμαζον καὶ τὴν τούτου προσηγορίαν ἔχειν προσέταττον.
Shortly after, the king of the Persians died having ruled for forty-three years, and Ochus succeeded to the kingdom, being renamed Artaxerxes, and ruled for twenty-three years; for because Artaxerxes had ruled well and had been altogether peaceful and successful, they renamed those who ruled after him and ordered them to have his appellation.
§15.93.2τοῦ δὲ βασιλέως Ταχὼ ἐπανελθόντος πρὸς τοὺς περὶ τὸν Ἀγησίλαον, Νεκτανεβὼς ἠθροικὼς στρατιώτας πλείους τῶν δέκα μυριάδων ἧκεν ἐπὶ τὸν Ταχώ, καὶ προεκαλεῖτο περὶ τῆς βασιλείας διαγωνίσασθαι.
When King Tachos returned to Agesilaus and his men, Nectanebos, having gathered more than a hundred thousand soldiers, came against Tachos and challenged him to fight for the kingship.
ὁ μὲν οὖν Ἀγησίλαος ὁρῶν τὸν βασιλέα καταπεπληγμένον καὶ μὴ τολμῶντα διακινδυνεύειν, παρεκάλει θαρρεῖν· τῆς γὰρ νίκης τυγχάνειν οὐ τοὺς κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος προέχοντας, ἀλλὰ τοὺς κατὰ τὰς ἀνδραγαθίας πρωτεύοντας· οὐ προσέχοντος δʼ αὐτοῦ συνηναγκάσθη μετʼ αὐτοῦ ποιήσασθαι τὴν ἀναχώρησιν εἴς τινα πόλιν εὐμεγέθη.
Now Agesilaus, seeing that the king was terrified and did not dare to run the risk, urged him to take courage; for it was not those who excelled in numbers who achieved victory, but those who were foremost in brave deeds; but since Tachos did not pay attention, he was forced to make the retreat with him into a certain large city.
§15.93.3οἱ δʼ Αἰγύπτιοι τὸ πρῶτον ἐπολιόρκουν τοὺς συγκεκλεισμένους· ἐπεὶ δὲ πολλοὺς ἐν ταῖς τειχομαχίαις ἀπέβαλον, τείχει καὶ τάφρῳ περιελάμβανον τὴν πόλιν.
The Egyptians at first besieged those who were shut up inside; but when they lost many men in the battles for the walls, they began to surround the city with a wall and a ditch.
ταχὺ δὲ τῶν ἔργων συντελουμένων διὰ τὴν πολυχειρίαν, καὶ τῶν ἐπιτηδείων ἐξαναλωθέντων, ὁ μὲν Ταχὼς ἀπέγνω τὴν σωτηρίαν, ὁ δὲ Ἀγησίλαος παρακαλέσας τοὺς στρατιώτας, καὶ νυκτὸς ἐπιθέμενος τοῖς πολεμίοις, διέσωσεν ἅπαντας τοὺς στρατιώτας ἀνελπίστως.
Since the works were quickly completed because of the abundance of hands, and the provisions were exhausted, Tachos despaired of survival, but Agesilaus, having encouraged the soldiers and attacked the enemy by night, saved all the soldiers unexpectedly.
§15.93.4ἐπιδιωξάντων δὲ τῶν Αἰγυπτίων καὶ τῶν τόπων ὄντων πεδινῶν, οἱ μὲν Αἰγύπτιοι διέλαβον τῷ πλήθει κεκυκλῶσθαι τοὺς πολεμίους καὶ πάντας ἄρδην ἀναιρήσειν, ὁ δὲ Ἀγησίλαος καταλαβόμενος τόπον, ὃς εἶχεν ἐξ ἑκατέρου μέρους διώρυγα ποταμοῦ χειροποίητον, ὑπέμενε τὴν τῶν πολεμίων ἔφοδον.
When the Egyptians pursued and the terrain was flat, the Egyptians expected to surround the enemy with their multitude and utterly destroy them all, but Agesilaus, having occupied a place which had on each side a man-made canal from the river, awaited the attack of the enemy.
§15.93.5ἐκτάξας δὲ τὴν δύναμιν οἰκείως τοῖς τόποις, καὶ τοῖς τοῦ ποταμοῦ ῥείθροις ὀχυρώσας τὴν στρατιάν, συνῆψε μάχην.
And having drawn up his force appropriately to the terrain, and having fortified his army with the streams of the river, he joined battle.
τοῦ δὲ πλήθους τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις ἀχρήστου γενομένου, ταῖς ἀρεταῖς προέχοντες οἱ Ἕλληνες πολλοὺς μὲν ἀπέκτειναν τῶν Αἰγυπτίων, τοὺς δὲ λοιποὺς φεύγειν ἠνάγκασαν.
Since their multitude became useless to the Egyptians, the Greeks, excelling in valor, killed many of the Egyptians and forced the rest to flee.
§15.93.6μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ὁ μὲν Ταχὼς ῥᾳδίως ἀνεκτήσατο τὴν κατʼ Αἴγυπτον βασιλείαν, ὁ δʼ Ἀγησίλαος ὡς μόνος κατωρθωκὼς τὴν βασιλείαν ἐτιμήθη προσηκούσαις δωρεαῖς.
After these things, Tachos easily recovered the kingship in Egypt, and Agesilaus was honored with appropriate gifts as the one who had single-handedly set the kingdom right.
ἐπανιὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν πατρίδα διὰ Κυρήνης ἐτελεύτησε, καὶ τοῦ σώματος ἐν μέλιτι κομισθέντος εἰς τὴν Σπάρτην ἔτυχε τῆς βασιλικῆς ταφῆς τε καὶ τιμῆς.
But while returning to his homeland through Cyrene, he died, and his body being carried in honey to Sparta, he received royal burial and honor.
καὶ τὰ μὲν κατὰ τὴν Ἀσίαν μέχρι τούτων προέβη κατὰ τοῦτον τὸν ἐνιαυτόν.
And the events in Asia progressed up to this point in this year.
