§15.94.1κατὰ δὲ τὴν Πελοπόννησον τοῖς Ἀρκάσι γενομένης εἰρήνης κοινῆς μετὰ τὴν ἐν Μαντινείᾳ μάχην, ἐνιαυτὸν μόνον ἐμμείναντες τοῖς ὅρκοις πάλιν κατέστησαν τὸν πόλεμον.
In the Peloponnese, although a common peace had been established among the Arcadians after the battle of Mantinea, they kept their oaths for only a single year and then entered into war again.
ἐν μὲν γὰρ τοῖς ὅρκοις ἦν γεγραμμένον ἑκάστους εἰς τὴν ἑαυτῶν ἀπιέναι πατρίδα μετὰ τὴν μάχην, εἰς δὲ τὴν Μεγάλην πόλιν ὑπῆρχον αἱ περιοικοῦσαι πόλεις μετῳκισμέναι καὶ δυσχερῶς φέρουσαι τὴν ἐκ τῆς πατρίδος μετάστασιν.
For while it was written in the oaths that each should return to their own homeland after the battle, the neighboring cities had been resettled into Megalopolis and they bore with difficulty the removal from their homeland.
διόπερ αὐτῶν ἐπανελθόντων εἰς τὰς προγεγενημένας πόλεις, οἱ Μεγαλοπολῖται συνηνάγκαζον ἐκλιπεῖν τὰς πατρίδας.
Therefore, when they returned to their former cities, the Megalopolitans forced them to abandon their homelands.
§15.94.2διὰ δὲ ταύτην τὴν αἰτίαν γενομένης διαφορᾶς, οἱ μὲν ἐκ τῶν πολισμάτων ἠξίουν αὐτοῖς βοηθεῖν Μαντινεῖς καὶ τῶν ἄλλων Ἀρκάδων τινάς, ἔτι δὲ Ἠλείους καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους τοὺς μετεσχηκότας τοῖς Μαντινεῦσι συμμαχίας·
When a dispute arose for this reason, those from the small towns requested the Mantineans and some of the other Arcadians, and furthermore the Eleans and the others who shared in the alliance with the Mantineans, to help them.
οἱ δὲ Μεγαλοπολῖται τοὺς Θηβαίους παρεκάλουν συμμαχεῖν.
On the other hand, the Megalopolitans called upon the Thebans for alliance.
οἷς ἀπέστειλαν συντόμως ὁπλίτας μὲν τρισχιλίους, ἱππεῖς δὲ τριακοσίους, ὧν τὴν στρατηγίαν εἶχε Παμμένης.
To them they quickly sent three thousand hoplites and three hundred cavalry, of whom Pammenes had the command.
§15.94.3οὗτος δὲ παρελθὼν εἰς Μεγάλην πόλιν, καὶ τῶν πολισμάτων ἃ μὲν ἐκπορθήσας, ἃ δὲ καταπληξάμενος, συνηνάγκασεν εἰς τὴν Μεγάλην πόλιν μετοικῆσαι.
He, having arrived at Megalopolis, and having plundered some of the small towns and terrified others, forced them to resettle into Megalopolis.
καὶ τὰ μὲν περὶ τὸν συνοικισμὸν τῶν πόλεων ἐπὶ τοσοῦτο ταραχῆς ἐλθόντα ἔτυχεν ἐνδεχομένης καταστολῆς.
Thus, the affairs concerning the amalgamation of the cities, having reached such a point of disorder, obtained a possible settlement.
§15.94.4τῶν δὲ συγγραφέων Ἀθάνας ὁ Συρακόσιος τῶν περὶ Δίωνα πράξεων ἐντεῦθεν ἀρξάμενος ἔγραψε μὲν βύβλους τρισκαίδεκα, προανέλαβε δὲ τὸν ἄγραφον χρόνον ἐτῶν ἑπτὰ ἀπὸ τῆς Φιλίστου συντάξεως ἐν μιᾷ βύβλῳ, καὶ διελθὼν τὰς πράξεις ἐν κεφαλαίοις συνεχῆ τὴν ἱστορίαν ἐποίησεν.
Among the historians, Athanas of Syracuse, having begun from this point his account of the deeds of Dion, wrote thirteen books, but he incorporated beforehand in one book the unwritten period of seven years from the end of Philistus' work, and having gone through the events in summary, made a continuous history.
