Having learned from the captives that the Mantineans in full force were present helping the Lacedaemonians, he then indeed withdrew a little from the city and encamped.
And having ordered the soldiers to prepare their dinner, having left behind some of the cavalry, he commanded them to keep fires burning in the camp until the morning watch, while he himself set out with his army and hastened to fall suddenly upon those left behind in Mantinea.
On the next day, having traversed a long distance, he suddenly and unexpectedly fell upon the Mantineans; yet he did not succeed in his attempt, although he had foreseen everything with his generalship, but because he found fortune acting against him, he unexpectedly lost the victory.
For just as he was approaching the deserted city, the soldiers sent by the Athenians for the alliance arrived at the other side of Mantinea, being six thousand in number and having as general Hegesileos, a man then highly praised among his fellow citizens.
And he, having introduced a sufficient number of them into the city, drew up the rest of his force as if to decide the issue by battle.
And immediately both the Lacedaemonians and the Mantineans appeared, and they all began preparing for the final decision of the whole matter and sending for their allies from everywhere.
Now, helping the Mantineans indeed were the Eleans, the Lacedaemonians, the Athenians, and certain others, whose entire number was more than twenty thousand infantry and about two thousand cavalry; while allied with the Tegeans were most and the strongest of the Arcadians, and the Achaeans, Boeotians, Argives, and some others of the Peloponnesians and of the external allies, and all these together were assembled to the number of over thirty thousand infantry and not less than three thousand cavalry.
