§15.47.1Λακεδαιμόνιοι δὲ στρατηγὸν καταστήσαντες Μνάσιππον ἐξαπέστειλαν ἐπὶ τὴν Κόρκυραν, ἔχοντα τριήρεις μὲν ἑξήκοντα καὶ πέντε, στρατιώτας δὲ χιλίους καὶ πεντακοσίους.
The Lacedaemonians, having appointed Mnasippus as general, dispatched him to Corcyra with sixty-five triremes and fifteen hundred soldiers.
οὗτος δὲ καταπλεύσας εἰς τὴν νῆσον καὶ προσλαβόμενος τοὺς φυγάδας εἰσέπλευσεν εἰς τὸν λιμένα, καὶ τεττάρων μὲν νεῶν ἐκυρίευσε, τῶν δὲ ὑπολοίπων τριῶν νεῶν φυγουσῶν πρὸς τὴν γῆν, αὗται μὲν ἐνεπρήσθησαν ὑπὸ τῶν Κορκυραίων, ἵνα μὴ τοῖς πολεμίοις ὑποχείριοι γένωνται.
He, having sailed to the island and taken the exiles with him, sailed into the harbor and captured four ships, but when the remaining three ships fled toward the land, these were set on fire by the Corcyreans, so that they might not fall into the hands of the enemy.
ἐνίκησε δὲ καὶ πεζῇ τοὺς ἐπὶ τῇ γῇ λόφον τινὰ κατειλημμένους, καὶ καθόλου πολὺν φόβον τοῖς Κορκυραίοις ἐπέστησεν.
He also defeated on land those who had occupied a certain hill, and in general inspired great fear in the Corcyreans.
§15.47.2Ἀθηναῖοι δὲ καὶ πάλαι μὲν ἀπεστάλκεισαν Τιμόθεον τὸν Κόνωνος ἐπὶ βοήθειαν τοῖς Κορκυραίοις μετὰ νεῶν ἑξήκοντα·
Now the Athenians had already some time ago dispatched Timotheus, the son of Conon, with sixty ships to aid the Corcyreans.
οὗτος δὲ πρὸ τῆς συμμαχίας ταύτης πλεύσας ἐπὶ Θρᾴκης, καὶ πολλὰς πόλεις ἐπὶ συμμαχίαν προκαλεσάμενος, προσέθηκε τριάκοντα τριήρεις·
But he, before this alliance, had sailed to Thrace and, having invited many cities to enter into alliance, had added thirty triremes.
§15.47.3τότε δὲ καθυστερῶν τῆς τῶν Κορκυραίων συμμαχίας τὸ μὲν πρῶτον ἀπέβαλε τὴν στρατηγίαν, τοῦ δήμου χαλεπῶς πρὸς αὐτὸν διατεθέντος·
But at that time, because he was late for the alliance with the Corcyreans, he at first lost his command, the people being angrily disposed toward him.
ὡς δὲ παρέπλευσεν εἰς τὰς Ἀθήνας, ἄγων πρέσβεων πλῆθος τῶν τὴν συμμαχίαν συντιθεμένων καὶ τριάκοντα τριήρεις προστεθεικώς, πάντα δὲ τὸν στόλον εὖ κατεσκευακὼς πρὸς τὸν πόλεμον, μετενόησεν ὁ δῆμος καὶ πάλιν αὐτῷ τὴν στρατηγίαν ἀποκατέστησεν.
When, however, he sailed into Athens bringing a great number of ambassadors of those who were making the alliance and having added thirty triremes, and having prepared the entire fleet well for the war, the people repented and restored the command to him again.
§15.47.4προσκατεσκεύαζον δὲ καὶ ἄλλας τριήρεις τετταράκοντα, ὥστε τὰς πάσας γίνεσθαι ἑκατὸν καὶ τριάκοντα· ἐποιοῦντο δὲ καὶ σίτου καὶ βελῶν καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν εἰς πόλεμον χρησίμων ἀξιολόγους παρασκευάς.
They also prepared forty additional triremes, so that the total became one hundred and thirty; and they made considerable preparations of grain, missiles, and other things useful for war.
κατὰ δὲ τὸ παρὸν στρατηγὸν ἑλόμενοι Κτησικλέα μετὰ στρατιωτῶν πεντακοσίων ἐξέπεμψαν βοηθήσοντα τοῖς Κορκυραίοις.
For the immediate present, having chosen Ctesicles as general, they dispatched him with five hundred soldiers to aid the Corcyreans.
§15.47.5οὗτος δὲ λάθρᾳ νυκτὸς ἔλαθε τοὺς πολιορκοῦντας εἰσπλεύσας εἰς Κόρκυραν·
He, secretly under cover of night, eluded the besiegers and sailed into Corcyra.
καὶ καταλαβὼν τοὺς ἐν τῇ πόλει πρὸς μὲν ἀλλήλους στασιάζοντας, τὰ δὲ κατὰ τὸν πόλεμον κακῶς διοικοῦντας, τὰς μὲν στάσεις διέλυσε, τῆς δὲ πόλεως πολλὴν ἐπιμέλειαν ποιησάμενος εὐθαρσεῖς ἐποίησε τοὺς πολιορκουμένους.
Finding those in the city in rebellion against one another and managing the affairs of the war badly, he dissolved the factions, and taking great care of the city, made the besieged of good courage.
§15.47.6καὶ τὸ μὲν πρῶτον ἀπροσδοκήτως τοῖς πολιορκοῦσιν ἐπιθέμενος ἀνεῖλεν αὐτῶν περὶ διακοσίους, ὕστερον δὲ μεγάλης μάχης γενομένης τόν τε Μνάσιππον ἀνεῖλε καὶ τῶν ἄλλων οὐκ ὀλίγους· τέλος δὲ τοὺς πολιορκοῦντας εἰς πολιορκίαν συγκλείσας μεγάλων ἐπαίνων ἔτυχεν.
And at first, attacking the besiegers unexpectedly, he slew about two hundred of them; later, when a great battle took place, he slew both Mnasippus and not a few of the others; and finally, shutting up the besiegers into a siege, he won great praise.
§15.47.7τοῦ δὲ περὶ τὴν Κόρκυραν πολέμου σχεδὸν ἤδη τέλος ἔχοντος κατέπλευσεν ὁ στόλος τῶν Ἀθηναίων εἰς τὴν Κόρκυραν, ἔχων στρατηγοὺς Τιμόθεον καὶ Ἰφικράτην.
When the war around Corcyra was already almost at an end, the Athenian fleet sailed into Corcyra, having Timotheus and Iphicrates as generals.
οὗτοι δὲ τῶν καιρῶν ὑστερηκότες ἄλλο μὲν οὐδὲν ἔπραξαν μνήμης ἄξιον, τριήρεσι δὲ Σικελικαῖς περιτυχόντες, ἃς Διονύσιος ἦν ἀπεσταλκὼς Λακεδαιμονίοις ἐπὶ συμμαχίαν, ὧν ἡγοῦντο Κισσίδης καὶ Κρίνιππος, αὐτάνδρους εἷλαν, οὔσας ἐννέα·
These, being too late for the opportunities, did nothing else worthy of mention, but having encountered nine Sicilian triremes, which Dionysius had dispatched to the Lacedaemonians for alliance and which were commanded by Cissides and Crinippus, they captured them, crew and all.
τοὺς δʼ ἁλόντας λαφυροπωλήσαντες, καὶ πλείω τῶν ἑξήκοντα ταλάντων ἀθροίσαντες, ἐμισθοδότησαν τὴν δύναμιν.
Selling those captured as booty and collecting more than sixty talents, they paid the wages of their force.
§15.47.8ἅμα δὲ τούτοις πραττομένοις κατὰ μὲν τὴν Κύπρον Νικοκλῆς ὁ εὐνοῦχος ἐδολοφόνησεν Εὐαγόραν τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τῆς τῶν Σαλαμινίων βασιλείας ἐκυρίευσε, κατὰ δὲ τὴν Ἰταλίαν Ῥωμαῖοι πρὸς Πραινεστίνους παραταξάμενοι καὶ νικήσαντες τοὺς πλείστους τῶν ἀντιταξαμένων κατέκοψαν.
At the same time that these things were being done, in Cyprus Nicocles the eunuch assassinated Evagoras the king and became master of the kingdom of the Salaminians; while in Italy the Romans, having drawn up in battle against the Praenestines and conquered them, cut down most of those opposed to them.
