§15.2.1ἐπʼ ἄρχοντος γὰρ Ἀθήνησι Μυστιχίδου Ῥωμαῖοι μὲν ἀντὶ τῶν ὑπάτων χιλιάρχους τρεῖς κατέστησαν, Μάρκον Φούριον, ἔτι δὲ Γάιον καὶ Αἰμίλιον.
For when Mystichides was archon at Athens, the Romans appointed three military tribunes instead of consuls, Marcus Furius, and also Gaius and Aemilius.
ἐπὶ δὲ τούτων Ἀρταξέρξης ὁ τῶν Περσῶν βασιλεὺς ἐστράτευσεν ἐπʼ Εὐαγόραν τὸν Κύπρου βασιλέα.
In their time Artaxerxes, the king of the Persians, made an expedition against Evagoras, the king of Cyprus.
πολὺν δὲ χρόνον ἀσχοληθεὶς περὶ τὰς εἰς τὸν πόλεμον παρασκευὰς συνεστήσατο δύναμιν ναυτικήν τε καὶ πεζὴν μεγάλην· τὸ μὲν γὰρ πεζὸν στράτευμα μυριάδων ἦν τριάκοντα σὺν ἱππεῦσι, τριήρεις δὲ κατεσκεύασε πλείους τῶν τριακοσίων.
Having spent a long time on the preparations for the war, he assembled a large naval and land force; for the land army consisted of three hundred thousand men, including the cavalry, and he equipped more than three hundred triremes.
§15.2.2στρατηγοὺς δʼ ἀπέδειξε τῆς πεζῆς δυνάμεως Ὀρόνταν κηδεστήν, τῆς δὲ ναυτικῆς Τιρίβαζον, ἄνδρα μεγάλης ἀποδοχῆς τυγχάνοντα παρὰ τοῖς Πέρσαις.
And he appointed as generals of the land force Orontas, his son-in-law, and of the naval force Tiribazus, a man who enjoyed great favor among the Persians.
οὗτοι δὲ παραλαβόντες τὰς δυνάμεις ἐν Φωκαίᾳ καὶ Κύμῃ κατήντησαν εἰς Κιλικίαν, καὶ περαιωθέντες εἰς Κύπρον ἐνεργῶς διῴκουν τὸν πόλεμον.
These men, having received the forces in Phocaea and Cyme, arrived in Cilicia, and crossing over to Cyprus, they actively conducted the war.
§15.2.3ὁ δʼ Εὐαγόρασπρὸς μὲν τὸν Ἄκοριν τὸν Αἰγυπτίων βασιλέα, πολέμιον ὄντα Περσῶν, συμμαχίαν ἐποιήσατο καὶ δύναμιν ἀξιόλογον παρʼ αὐτοῦ προσελάβετο, παρʼ Ἑκατόμνου δὲ τοῦ Καρίας δυνάστου, λάθρᾳ συμπράττοντος αὐτῷ, χρημάτων ἔλαβε πλῆθος εἰς διατροφὴν ξενικῶν δυνάμεων· ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους τοὺς ἀλλοτρίως ἔχοντας πρὸς Πέρσας, τοὺς μὲν λαθραίως, τοὺς δὲ καὶ φανερῶς ἐπεσπάσατο κοινωνήσοντας τοῦ Περσικοῦ πολέμου.
On his part, Evagoras made an alliance with Acoris, the king of the Egyptians, who was an enemy of the Persians, and received a considerable force from him; and from Hecatomnus, the ruler of Caria, who was secretly cooperating with him, he received a large sum of money for the maintenance of foreign forces; in like manner he drew in others who were hostile to the Persians, some secretly and some even openly, to join in the Persian war.
§15.2.4ἐκυρίευε δὲ κατὰ μὲν τὴν Κύπρον τῶν πόλεων σχεδόν τι πασῶν, κατὰ δὲ τὴν Φοινίκην Τύρου καί τινων ἑτέρων.
He was master of almost all the cities in Cyprus, and in Phoenicia, of Tyre and some others.
εἶχε δὲ τριήρεις μὲν ἐνενήκοντα, καὶ τούτων ὑπῆρχον Τύριαι μὲν εἴκοσι, Κύπριαι δʼ ἑβδομήκοντα, στρατιώτας δʼ ἰδίους μὲν ἑξακισχιλίους, παρὰ δὲ τῶν συμμάχων πολλῷ τούτων πλείους.
He had ninety triremes, of which twenty were Tyrian and seventy Cyprian, and six thousand soldiers of his own, and from his allies a far greater number than this.
πρὸς δὲ τούτοις μισθοφόρους πολλοὺς ἐξενολόγει, ἔχων χρημάτων δαψίλειαν.
In addition to these, he recruited many mercenaries, having an abundance of money.
ἔπεμψε δʼ αὐτῷ καὶ ὁ τῶν Ἀράβων βασιλεὺς στρατιώτας οὐκ ὀλίγους καὶ ἄλλοι τινὲς οἱ ἐν ὑποψίαις ὄντες τῷ τῶν Περσῶν βασιλεῖ.
The king of the Arabs also sent him not a few soldiers, and some others who were under suspicion of the king of the Persians.
