§14.55.1Ἰμίλκων δὲ τοῖς κυβερνήταις ἅπασι δοὺς βυβλίον ἐπεσφραγισμένον, ἐκέλευσεν ἀνοίγειν ὅταν ἐκπλεύσωσι καὶ ποιεῖν τὰ γεγραμμένα.
Himilco, having given a sealed letter to all the pilots, ordered them to open it when they had sailed out and to do what had been written.
τοῦτο δʼ ἐμηχανήσατο πρὸς τὸ μηδένα τῶν κατασκόπων ἀπαγγεῖλαι τὸν κατάπλουν τῷ Διονυσίῳ· ἦν δὲ γεγραμμένον, ὅπως ἐς Πάνορμον καταπλεύσωσιν.
He devised this in order that none of the spies might report the place of landing to Dionysius; and what had been written was that they should sail into Panormus.
§14.55.2διόπερ ἐπιγενομένου πνεύματος οὐρίου, καὶ πάντων λυσάντων τὰ πρυμνήσια, τὰ μὲν φορτηγὰ τῶν πλοίων ἔπλει διὰ τοῦ πελάγους, αἱ δὲ τριήρεις ἔπλευσαν εἰς τὴν Λιβυκήν, παρελέγοντό τε τὴν γῆν.
Therefore, when a favorable wind arose and everyone had cast off the stern-cables, the merchant ships sailed through the open sea, while the triremes sailed toward Libya and coasted along the land.
φοροῦ δὲ πνεύματος ὄντος, ὡς ἤδη καταφανεῖς ἦσαν ἀπὸ τῆς Σικελίας αἱ πρῶται πλέουσαι τῶν φορτηγῶν νεῶν, Διονύσιος ἀπέστειλε Λεπτίνην μετὰ τριάκοντα τριήρων, παρακελευσάμενος τύπτειν τοῖς ἐμβόλοις καὶ διαφθείρειν ἁπάσας τὰς καταλαμβανομένας.
Since the wind was carrying them along, as soon as the first of the merchant ships under sail were visible from Sicily, Dionysius dispatched Leptines with thirty triremes, commanding him to strike with the rams and destroy all those that were overtaken.
§14.55.3ὃς μετὰ σπουδῆς ἐκπλεύσας καὶ ταῖς πρώταις προσμίξας εὐθέως τινὰς αὐτάνδρους κατέδυσεν· αἱ δὲ λοιπαὶ πλήρεις οὖσαι καὶ τὸν ἄνεμον τοῖς ἱστίοις δεχόμεναι ῥᾳδίως ἐξέφυγον·
He, having sailed out in haste and closed with the first ships, immediately sank some of them with their crews; but the rest, being fully laden and catching the wind in their sails, easily escaped.
ὅμως κατέδυσε πεντήκοντα ναῦς στρατιώτας ἐχούσας πεντακισχιλίους, ἅρματα δὲ διακόσια.
Nevertheless, he sank fifty ships, which carried five thousand soldiers and two hundred chariots.
§14.55.4Ἰμίλκων δὲ καταπλεύσας εἰς Πάνορμονκαὶ τὴν δύναμιν ἐκβιβάσας ἦγεν ἐπὶ τοὺς πολεμίους, καὶ τὰς μὲν τριήρεις παραπλεῖν ἐκέλευσεν, αὐτὸς δʼ ἐν παρόδῳ διὰ προδοσίας ἑλὼν Ἔρυκα πρὸς τὴν Μοτύην κατεστρατοπέδευσεν.
Himilco, having sailed into Panormus and disembarked his army, led them against the enemy, and ordered the triremes to sail along the coast, while he himself on his way took Eryx by treachery and encamped near Motya.
ὄντος δὲ κατὰ τοῦτον τὸν χρόνον τοῦ Διονυσίου περὶ τὴν Αἴγεσταν μετὰ τῆς δυνάμεως, Ἰμίλκων τὴν Μοτύην ἐξεπολιόρκησεν.
Since Dionysius was at this time with his army around Aegesta, Himilco took Motya by siege.
§14.55.5τῶν δὲ Σικελιωτῶν προθύμων ὄντων διαμάχεσθαι, Διονύσιος ἅμα μὲν μακρὰν τῶν συμμαχίδων πόλεων ἀπεωσμένος, ἅμα δὲ τῆς σιτοπομπίας ἐπιλειπούσης, διέλαβε συμφέρειν ἐφʼ ἑτέρων τόπων συστήσασθαι τὸν πόλεμον.
Although the Sicilian Greeks were eager to fight it out, Dionysius, since he had been pushed far away from his allied cities and at the same time his supply of grain was failing, concluded that it was to his advantage to establish the war in other places.
§14.55.6κρίνας οὖν ἀναζευγνύειν, τοὺς μὲν Σικανοὺς ἔπειθε καταλιπεῖν τὰς πόλεις κατὰ τὸ παρὸν καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ στρατεύεσθαι· ἀντὶ δὲ τούτων ἐπηγγέλλετο δώσειν χώραν βελτίονα καὶ τῷ πλήθει παραπλησίαν, καὶ μετὰ τὴν τοῦ πολέμου κατάλυσιν κατάξειν τοὺς βουλομένους εἰς τὰς πατρίδας.
Deciding, therefore, to withdraw, he persuaded the Sicani to abandon their cities for the time being and to campaign with him; in return for this, he promised to give them a better territory of similar size, and after the termination of the war to restore to their homelands those who so desired.
§14.55.7τῶν δὲ Σικανῶν ὀλίγοι, καταπλαγέντες μήποτε ἀντιλέγοντες διαρπασθῶσιν ὑπὸ τῶν στρατιωτῶν, συγκατέθεντο τοῖς ἀξιουμένοις ὑπὸ Διονυσίου.
But only a few of the Sicani, being terrified lest, if they refused, they should be plundered by the soldiers, agreed to the demands of Dionysius.
ἀπέστησαν δὲ παραπλησίως καὶ Ἁλικυαῖοι, καὶ πέμψαντες πρέσβεις εἰς τὸ τῶν Καρχηδονίων στρατόπεδον συμμαχίαν ἐποιήσαντο.
In like manner, the Halicyaeans also revolted, and sending ambassadors to the camp of the Carthaginians, concluded an alliance.
καὶ Διονύσιος μὲν ἀφώρμησεν ἐπὶ Συρακουσῶν, καταφθείρων τὴν χώραν διʼ ἧς ἦγε τὴν δύναμιν.
And Dionysius, indeed, set out for Syracuse, laying waste the territory through which he led his army.
