When a year had elapsed, in Athens Phormion entered upon the office of archon, and in Rome, instead of consuls, six military tribunes were elected, Gnaeus Genucius, Lucius Atilius, Marcus Pomponius, Gaius Duilius, Marcus Veturius, and Valerius Publilius; and the ninety-sixth Olympiad was celebrated, in which Eupolis of Elis won the stadium race.
When these had entered upon their office, Dionysius, the tyrant of the Syracusans, decamped from Syracuse with all his forces and invaded the domain of the Carthaginians.
While he was plundering the country, the Halicyaeans, being struck with terror, sent ambassadors to him and concluded an alliance; but the Aegesteans, making an unexpected attack by night upon the besiegers and setting fire to the tents in the encampment, threw the men in the camp into great confusion.
Since the flames spread over a large area and the fire became uncontrollable, a few of the soldiers who rushed to help perished, and most of the horses were burned to death along with the tents.
And Dionysius, indeed, was pillaging the land with no one opposing him, while Leptines the admiral, staying around Motya, was watching for the arrival of the enemy's fleet.
But the Carthaginians, when they learned of the magnitude of Dionysius' forces, decided that they must far surpass him in their preparations.
Therefore, having appointed Himilco as king according to their laws, they gathered forces from all Libya and also from Iberia, summoning some from their allies and hiring others as mercenaries; and in the end they assembled over three hundred thousand infantry, and four thousand cavalry besides the chariots, which numbered four hundred.
Their warships were four hundred, and those conveying grain, siege engines, and other supplies were more than six hundred, just as Ephorus states.
For Timaeus says that the forces which crossed from Libya did not exceed one hundred thousand, and in addition to these, he declares that another thirty thousand were recruited in Sicily.
