§14.31.1κἀκεῖθεν εἰς Κοτύωρα πόλιν παρεγενήθησαν Ἑλληνίδα, Σινωπέων ἄποικον.
And from there they arrived at Cotyora, a Greek city, a colony of the Sinopians.
ἐν ταύτῃ δὲ πεντήκονθʼ ἡμέρας διέτριψαν τοὺς περιοίκους τῆς Παφλαγονίας τε καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους βαρβάρους λῃστεύοντες.
In this city they spent fifty days, plundering the neighboring inhabitants of Paphlagonia and the other barbarians.
Ἡρακλεῶται δὲ καὶ Σινωπεῖς ἀπέστειλαν αὐτοῖς πλοῖα, διʼ ὧν αὐτοί τε καὶ τὰ σκευοφόρα διεκομίσθησαν.
The Heracleots and Sinopians sent them boats, by means of which they themselves and their baggage were transported.
§14.31.2ἡ δὲ Σινώπη Μιλησίων μὲν ἦν ἄποικος, κειμένη δʼ ἐν τῇ Παφλαγονίᾳ μέγιστον εἶχεν ἀξίωμα τῶν περὶ τοὺς τόπους· ἐν ᾗ δὴ καθʼ ἡμᾶς ἔσχε Μιθριδάτης ὁ πρὸς Ῥωμαίους διαπολεμήσας τὰ μέγιστα βασίλεια.
Now Sinope was a colony of the Milesians, and being situated in Paphlagonia, it held the greatest prestige among the places in those parts; and indeed, in our own time, Mithridates, who waged war against the Romans, had his greatest palace in this city.
§14.31.3παρεγενήθη δὲ καὶ ἐνταῦθα Χειρίσοφος ὁ πρὸς τὰς τριήρεις ἀπεσταλμένος ἄπρακτος.
Cheirisophus, who had been dispatched to secure the triremes, also arrived there, having accomplished nothing.
οὐ μὴν ἀλλʼ οἱ Σινωπεῖς φιλοφρόνως αὐτοὺς ξενίσαντες ἀπέπεμψαν αὐτοὺς κατὰ θάλατταν εἰς Ἡράκλειαν, Μεγαρέων ἄποικον· καὶ καθωρμίσθη πᾶς ὁ στόλος πρὸς τὴν Ἀχερουσίαν χερρόνησον, ὅπου φασὶν Ἡρακλέα τὸν ἐξ ᾅδου Κέρβερον ἀναγαγεῖν.
Nevertheless, the Sinopians, after hospitably entertaining them, sent them by sea to Heraclea, a colony of the Megarians; and the entire fleet came to anchor at the Acherusian peninsula, where they say Heracles brought up Cerberus from Hades.
§14.31.4ἐκεῖθεν δὲ πεζῇ διὰ Βιθυνίας πορευόμενοι κινδύνοις περιέπιπτον, τῶν ἐγχωρίων ἐξαπτομένων κατὰ τὴν πορείαν.
From there, marching on foot through Bithynia, they fell into dangers, since the inhabitants fell upon them during their march.
μόγις οὖν διεσώθησαν εἰς Χρυσόπολιν τῆς Χαλκηδονίασοἱ περιλειφθέντες ἀπὸ μυρίων ὀκτακισχίλιοι τριακόσιοι.
Thus they barely escaped in safety to Chrysopolis of Chalcedonia, numbering eight thousand three hundred survivors out of the original ten thousand.
§14.31.5ἐκεῖθεν δὲ ῥᾳδίως ἤδη τὸ λοιπὸν τινὲς μὲν διεσώθησαν εἰς τὰς πατρίδας, οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ περὶ τὴν Χερρόνησον ἀθροισθέντες ἐπόρθουν τὴν παρακειμένην Θρᾳκῶν χώραν.
From there, the remainder of the journey being now easy, some returned safely to their own homelands, while the rest, gathering about the Chersonese, plundered the adjacent territory of the Thracians.
ἡ μὲν οὖν ἐπʼ Ἀρταξέρξην Κύρου στρατεία τοιοῦτον ἔσχε τὸ τέλος.
Such, then, was the end of the expedition of Cyrus against Artaxerxes.
