Plato · Timaeus §41

Address to the Gods and Mixing of Immortal Souls

Passage 13 of 41 · Greek

Summary

The Demiurge addresses the generated gods, commanding them to create the remaining mortal living beings to make the universe complete, while he himself mixes the immortal part of the souls, distributes them among the stars, and reveals the laws of destiny to them.

§41ΤΙ.
Timaeus: So then, let the generation of these gods for us, according to those accounts, be in this way and be so stated.
Of Earth and Heaven were born Oceanus and Tethys, and of these Phorcys, Cronos, and Rhea, and all those with them; and of Cronos and Rhea, Zeus, Hera, and all those whom we know are called their siblings, and still others descended from these.
But when, therefore, all those gods who circle visibly, and those who appear as far as they wish, had been generated, the creator of this universe spoke to them as follows: "Gods of gods, of whom I am the maker and father of works, those things generated by me are indissoluble, at least without my willing it.
Now, everything bound is dissoluble, but to wish to dissolve that which is well harmonized and in good condition is the part of an evil one.
Wherefore, since you have been generated, you are not indeed immortal nor completely indissoluble, yet you shall not be dissolved nor meet with the fate of death, having obtained my will as a bond even greater and more sovereign than those with which you were bound together when you were generated.
Now, therefore, learn what I declare to you.
There still remain three mortal races ungenerated; and if these are not generated, the heaven will be incomplete, for it will not have all the races of living beings within itself, yet it must have them if it is to be sufficiently perfect.
But if these were generated by me and participated in life, they would be equal to gods.
In order, therefore, that they may be mortal and that this universe may truly be all, turn yourselves according to nature to the creation of living beings, imitating my power in your own generation.
And so far as it is fitting for them to have a name in common with the immortals, that which is called divine and which leads among those of them who always wish to follow justice and you, I, having sown it and given the beginning, will deliver to you; and for the rest, do you, weaving the mortal to the immortal, work out and generate living beings, and by giving them food make them grow, and receive them again when they decay." Thus he spoke, and again into the former mixing bowl, in which he had been mixing and blending the soul of the universe, he poured the remains of the previous ingredients, blending them in a certain way in the same manner, yet no longer pure in the same way, but of a second and third degree of purity.
And having constituted the whole, he divided souls equal in number to the stars, and assigned each soul to each star, and having mounted them as if on a vehicle, he showed them the nature of the universe, and declared to them the laws of destiny: namely, that the first generation would be one and the same ordained for all, so that no one should be disadvantaged by him, and that, when they had been sown into the instruments of time suitable to each, they must grow as the most god-fearing of living beings; and that, since human nature is twofold, the better kind would be such a race as would thereafter be called man.

Notes

  1. 41aθεοὶ θεῶν — Regarding the relationship between the vocative `θεοί` and the genitive `θεῶν`, there are traditionally two main interpretations: "gods of gods" (the highest gods) or supplying a noun in apposition to take the relative clause `ὧν` ("gods, [and] works of which I am the creator and father"). We adopt the latter reading to reflect the context where the Demiurge addresses his own creations.
  2. 41aὧν ἐγὼ δημιουργὸς πατήρ τε ἔργων — A hyperbaton structure in which the relative pronoun `ὧν` is placed before and separated from the noun `ἔργων` which it modifies ("works of which I am the creator and father").
  3. 41bτῆς ἐμῆς βουλήσεως μείζονος ἔτι δεσμοῦ καὶ κυριωτέρου λαχόντες — The participle `λαχόντες` governs the genitive object `τῆς ἐμῆς βουλήσεως`. `δεσμοῦ` is in apposition to `βουλήσεως`, and `ἐκείνων` acts as a genitive of comparison dependent on the comparatives `μείζονος` and `κυριωτέρου`.
  4. 42aὄργανα χρόνων — Literally "instruments of times." Given the context in the preceding sections (§39-40) where the celestial bodies were introduced as instruments for measuring time, this refers to the stars where the souls are sown, but also subtly evokes the physical organs that function within time.
