§105ΣΩ.
SOCRATES: It must be spoken, then.
It is indeed difficult for a lover to address a man who is no less proud than his lovers, but nevertheless, I must venture to express my thoughts.
For I, Alcibiades, if I saw you satisfied with the things I have just described and believing that you ought to spend your life in them, would have given up my love long ago—at least so I persuade myself.
But now, on the contrary, I will charge you with other thoughts of yours before you yourself, by which you will also know that I have continually paid attention to you.
For you seem to me, if one of the gods should say to you: "Alcibiades, do you wish to live possessing what you now have, or to die immediately if you are not allowed to acquire greater things?" you would, it seems to me, choose to die.
But now, on what hope on earth you live, I will tell.
You believe that as soon as you come forward to the Athenian assembly—and this will happen in a very few days—having come forward, you will demonstrate to the Athenians that you are worthy to be honored as neither Pericles nor any other of those who have ever lived, and having demonstrated this, you will have the greatest power in the city; and if you are the greatest here, you will also be so among the other Greeks, and not only among the Greeks, but also among the barbarians who inhabit the same continent as we do.
And if this same god should say to you again that you must rule here in Europe, but it will not be permitted for you to cross over into Asia nor to lay hands on the affairs there, you would not, it seems to me, wish to live on these terms alone, unless you fill almost all mankind with your name and your power; and I think you believe that no one except Cyrus and Xerxes has ever been worthy of mention.
That you have this hope, then, I know well and do not guess.
Perhaps, then, since you know that I speak the truth, you might say: "What on earth, Socrates, has this to do with your >argument?" And I will tell you, dear son of Clinias and Dinomache.
For it is impossible for the fulfillment of all these thoughts of yours to be accomplished without me; such great power I think I have over your affairs and over you, which is indeed why I think the god has long forbidden me to speak with you, and I was waiting for when he would permit it.
For just as you have hopes of demonstrating to the city that you are worthy of everything to it, and having demonstrated it, that you will immediately have power, so I too hope to have the greatest power with you by demonstrating that I am worthy of everything to you, and that neither guardian, nor kinsman, nor anyone else is capable of handing over the power you desire except me, with the help of the god, however.
When you were younger, then, and before you were full of such hope, as it seems to me, the god did not permit me to speak, so that I might not speak in vain.
But now he has permitted it; for now you will listen to me.
