§103ΣΩ.
SOCRATES: Son of Clinias, I think you wonder that I, who became your first lover, do not depart while the others have stopped, and remain the only one, and that while the others importuned you with their talk, I have not even spoken to you for so many years.
The cause of this has not been human, but a certain daimonion opposition, the power of which you will learn later.
But now, since it no longer opposes me, I have come to you in this way; and I am hopeful that in the future too it will not oppose.
Pretty much, then, I have understood during this time, by observing how you behaved toward your lovers; for though they were many and high-minded, there was not one who was not overcome by your pride and did not flee.
§104ΣΩ.
SOCRATES: And I wish to state the reason by which you look down on them.
You say that you are in need of no man for anything; for you think that the things belonging to you are so great that you need nothing, starting from the body and ending with the soul.
For you believe, first, that you are the most beautiful and tallest—and that you do not lie in this is clear for everyone to see—and next, that you belong to the most vigorous family in your city, where, on your father's side, you have very many and excellent friends and kinsmen who would serve you if there were any need, and those on your mother's side are not at all inferior nor fewer.
And greater than all the things I have mentioned, you think that you have Pericles, the son of Xanthippus, as a power supporting you, whom your father left as guardian to you and your brother; who is able to do whatever he pleases not only in this city, but in all Greece and among many and great nations of the barbarians.
And I will also add that you are among the wealthy; but you seem to me to pride yourself least on this.
For all these reasons, then, you in your boasting have conquered your lovers, and they, being inferior, have been conquered; and this has not escaped your notice.
Hence I know well that you wonder what on earth I am thinking that I do not give up my love, and what hope I have that I remain when the others have fled.
ΑΛ.
ALCIBIADES: And perhaps, Socrates, you do not know that you have anticipated me by just a little.
For I had it in mind to approach you first and ask you these very things: what on earth do you want, and looking to what hope do you trouble me, being most diligently present wherever I may be?
For I truly wonder what on earth your business is, and I would most gladly hear it.
ΣΩ.
SOCRATES: Then you will listen to me, as is likely, eagerly, if indeed you desire, as you say, to know what I am thinking; and I speak on the understanding that you will listen and wait.
ΑΛ.
ALCIBIADES: By all means; please speak.
ΣΩ.
SOCRATES: Watch out, then; for indeed it would not be surprising if, just as I have begun with difficulty, so I should end with difficulty.
ΑΛ.
ALCIBIADES: My good friend, speak; for I shall listen.
