PHAEDO. And Socrates said, "Reasonably enough, Crito, those men do what you say — for they think they will gain something by doing so — and I, reasonably enough, shall not do so.
For I think I shall gain nothing by drinking it a little later, except to incur ridicule in my own eyes, clinging to life and sparing what is no longer there.
But go," he said, "obey me and do not do otherwise." And Crito, having heard this, nodded to the boy standing near.
And the boy went out, and after spending a considerable time, came back bringing the man who was to administer the poison, carrying it ready ground in a cup.
Socrates, seeing the man, said, "Well, my good friend, since you are experienced in these matters, what must I do?" "Nothing else," he said, "than after drinking it to walk about until a heaviness comes in your legs, and then to lie down; and so it will act of itself." And at the same time he handed the cup to Socrates.
καὶ ὃς λαβὼν καὶ μάλα ἵλεως, ὦ Ἐχέκρατες, οὐδὲν τρέσας οὐδὲ διαφθείρας οὔτε τοῦ χρώματος οὔτε τοῦ προσώπου, ἀλλ’ ὥσπερ εἰώθει ταυρηδὸν ὑποβλέψας πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον, τί λέγεις, ἔφη, περὶ τοῦδε τοῦ πώματος πρὸς τὸ ἀποσπεῖσαί τινι;
And he took it, and with great cheerfulness, Echecrates, without trembling or changing at all either in color or in features, but looking up at the man with his usual bull-like glare, said, "What do you say about making a libation to some god from this drink?
Is it permitted or not?" "We only grind, Socrates," he replied, "as much as we think is the proper amount to drink." "I understand," he said; "but at least it is both permitted and proper to pray to the gods that the migration from here to there may be fortunate; which indeed I do pray, and may it be so!" And as he said this, he held the cup to his lips and quite easily and cheerfully drank it off.
And most of us until then had been tolerably able to restrain our tears, but when we saw him drinking and having drunk, we could do so no longer, but in spite of myself my tears poured out in torrents, so that I covered my face and wept for myself — for indeed not for him, but for my own fortune, of what a companion and friend I had been deprived.
Crito, even before me, since he was unable to restrain his tears, had got up and gone out.
And Apollodorus, who even in the past had never stopped weeping, then indeed burst into loud wailing, and by his weeping and grieving broke down everyone who was present, except Socrates himself.
But he said, "What are you doing, you strange people?
Indeed, I sent the women away chiefly for this reason, that they might not commit such blunders; for I have heard that one ought to die in peace.
Keep quiet, then, and be patient." And we, hearing this, were ashamed and restrained our tears.
And he walked about, and when he said his legs were getting heavy, he lay down on his back — for so the man had directed — and at the same time the one who had given him the poison touched him, and after an interval examined his feet and legs, and then, pressing his foot hard, asked him if he felt anything, and he said no.
PHAEDO.
And after this he touched his shins; and going upwards in this way, he showed us that he was growing cold and stiff.
And Socrates himself touched his body and said that when it reached his heart, then he would be gone.
Now when the region of the lower abdomen was almost cold, he uncovered his face — for he had covered himself — and said — which was indeed his last utterance — "Crito, we owe a cock to Asclepius; pay it, therefore, and do not neglect it." "It shall be done," said Crito; "but see if you have anything else to say." To this question he made no further answer, but after a short interval he stirred; and the man uncovered him, and his eyes were fixed; and Crito, seeing this, closed his mouth and his eyes.
Such was the end, Echecrates, of our companion, a man who, as we would say, of all those of his time whom we have known, was the best, and besides, the wisest and most just.
