§5Τύπων δὲ διπλοῦνται οἱ πρῶτοι καλούμενοι, οἷον ἀμφημερινὸς, τριταῖος, τεταρταῖος.
Of the types of fever, those called primary are doubled, such as quotidian, tertian, and quartan.
ἀμφημερινὸς μὲν οὖν ἐστι διπλοῦς ὁ καθ’ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν δὶς ἐπισημαίνων ὁμοίως, δίς τε ἐπανιείς·
Now, a double quotidian is that which shows an onset twice every day in like manner and remits twice.
δύο τριταῖοι δὲ τυγχάνουσιν, ὁπότε διαφόρων ἐπισημασιῶν καθ’ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν ἐπιγινομένων ἑαυτοῖς διὰ τρίτης ἀπαντῶσι·
And double tertians occur when, different onsets occurring every day, they meet each other every other day.
τεταρταῖοι δὲ, ὁπότ’ ἂν μιᾶς ἡμέρας γινομένης καλῆς, ἑξῆς δυσὶν ἡμέραις συμβαίνει πυρέσσειν, τῶν διὰ τεσσάρων σχημάτων καθ’ ἑκάστην τῶν ἐπισημασιῶν τῶν ὡρῶν ἀποσωζομένων.
And quartans are doubled when, one day being free of fever, it happens that the patient has fever on the next two days in succession, while the four-day patterns are preserved with respect to the hours of each of the onsets.
ἐπιπλέκεται δὲ ἀμφημερινὸς τριταίῳ, ὅταν ἡ μὲν α΄ τῶν ἡμερῶν δὶς ἐπισημαίνῃ καὶ δὶς ἀνίῃ· ἡ δ’ ἑξῆς ἅπαξ· τρίτη δὲ πάλιν ὁμοίως πρώτῃ.
And a quotidian is complicated with a tertian when the first of the days shows onset twice and remits twice, the next day once, and the third day again in like manner to the first.
ἐπιπλέκεται δὲ ἀμφημερινὸς τεταρταίῳ, ὅταν τῇ μὲν α΄ δὶς ἐπισημαίνῃ· ταῖς δ’ ἑξῆς δυσὶν ἅπαξ· τῇ δ΄ ὁμοίως δίς.
And a quotidian is complicated with a quartan when on the first day it shows onset twice, on the next two days once, and on the fourth day in like manner twice.
συμπλέκονται δὲ ἀλλήλοις ἀμφημερινὸς, τριταῖος καὶ τεταρταῖος, ὅταν ἡ μὲν α΄ τῶν ἡμερῶν τρεῖς ἐπισημασίας ἔχῃ καὶ τρεῖς ἐπανέσεις· ἡ δὲ β΄ μίαν· ἡ δὲ γ΄ δύο, καὶ ἡ δ΄ τρεῖς, καὶ ἡ ε΄ μίαν, ἡ στ΄ δὲ δύο, ἑβδόμη δὲ πάλιν τρεῖς, καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ τὴν αὐτὴν ταῖς πρώταις τάξιν φυλάττουσι, καὶ καθ’ ἕτερον τρόπον συμβάλλουσιν οἱ τύποι, καὶ εἰς τὸ αὐτὸ σχῆμα παραγίγνονται.
And quotidian, tertian, and quartan are complicated with each other when the first of the days has three onsets and three remissions, the second one, the third two, the fourth three, the fifth one, the sixth two, the seventh again three, and the remaining days preserve the same order as the first, and also when the types meet in another way and arrive at the same pattern.
ἐπιπλέκεται δὲ τριταῖος τεταρταίῳ, ὅταν ἡ μὲν α΄ τῶν ἡμερῶν δύο ἐπισημασίας ἐνέγκῃ καὶ δύο ἀνέσεις· ἡ δὲ β΄ μηδ’ ὅλως· τρίτη δὲ ἅπαξ· καὶ τετάρτη πάλιν ὁμοίως, ὡσαύτως καὶ αἱ ἑξῆς.
And a tertian is complicated with a quartan when the first of the days brings two onsets and two remissions, the second none at all, the third once, and the fourth again in like manner, and likewise for the following days.
ἐπιπλέκεται δὲ τριταῖος, τεταρταῖος καὶ πεμπταῖος, ὅταν τῇ μὲν α΄ τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐπισημανθῆναι συμβῇ, τῇ β΄ δ’ ἀναστῆναι· καὶ πάλιν τῇ τρίτῃ τριταῖος, καὶ τῇ τετάρτῃ τεταρταῖος, καὶ τῇ πέμπτῃ ἅμα ἅπαξ.
And tertian, quartan, and quintan are complicated when on the first of the days it happens that there is an onset, on the second day a recovery, and again on the third day a tertian, on the fourth a quartan, and on the fifth together once.
καὶ ἄλλως δέ πως τούτου τοῦ τύπου ἡ εἰσβολὴ γίγνεται, οὐδὲν ἧττον εἰς τὸν αὐτὸν τύπον τῆς τάξεως ἐμπιπτούσης τῆς τριταίου πρὸς τὸν ἡμιτριταῖον συμπλοκῆς, καθάπερ ἐπὶ τῆς ὑπογραφῆς ἔχει ταύτης.
And in some other way too the onset of this type occurs, which is none the less because the complication of the tertian with the semitertian falls into the same type of order, just as it is in this description.
τῇ α΄ ἤρξατο ἀπὸ ἑσπέρας μετὰ ῥίγους καὶ ἔλυσεν ἕως πρωῒ, παρέμεινε δὲ ἕως ὥρας ὀγδόης· εἶτα ἐμπίπτει ἐπισημασία μετὰ περιψύξεως, καὶ μένει τὴν ἐρχομένην νύκτα καὶ τῆς ἡμέρας ἕως ὥρας η΄ καὶ, πάλιν ἄνεσις ἀκολουθεῖ, εἶτα εἰς τὴν νύκτα πάλιν ἐπισημασία μετὰ ῥίγους, καὶ εἰς ἡμέραν πάλιν ἄνεσις ὁμοία τῇ ἀναλόγῳ, καὶ ἑξῆς κύκλος ὁμοίως.
On the first day, the fever began from evening with a chill and resolved by morning, and the remission lasted until the eighth hour; then an onset supervenes with a cooling, and it remains during the coming night and of the day until the eighth hour, and again a remission follows; then into the night again an onset with a chill, and into the day again a remission similar to the corresponding one, and the subsequent cycle likewise.
