Thus the other parts submitted to him quietly, but as he was marching peacefully into Boeotia, the leading men of the Thebans met him; they favored the Macedonian cause because of Brachylles, but they welcomed and honored Titus, as if friendship existed towards both sides.
Meeting them kindly and greeting them, he proceeded quietly along the way, now asking and inquiring about some things, now relating others, and leading them on purposely until his soldiers should catch up from their march.
Advancing in this way, he entered the city together with the Thebans, who were not at all pleased but hesitated to prevent him, since only a moderate number of soldiers followed them.
Moreover, Titus, having come forward as if he did not hold the city, tried to persuade them to choose the Roman cause, while King Attalus spoke in his support and joined in urging the Thebans. But Attalus, as it seems, being eager to offer himself as an orator for Titus more zealously than his old age allowed, was seized with a sudden dizziness or stroke in the very midst of his speech, fell down deprived of his senses, and not long after, having been carried back by ship to Asia, died; and the Boeotians submitted to the Romans.
