§5.31.1ἦλθε δὲ καὶ Ἠλείων πρεσβεία εὐθὺς καὶ ἐποιήσατο πρὸς Κορινθίους ξυμμαχίαν πρῶτον, ἔπειτα ἐκεῖθεν ἐς Ἄργος ἐλθόντες, καθάπερ προείρητο, Ἀργείων ξύμμαχοι ἐγένοντο.
An embassy of the Eleans also arrived immediately and first made an alliance with the Corinthians, and then going from there to Argos, as had been agreed beforehand, they became allies of the Argives.
διαφερόμενοι γὰρ ἐτύγχανον τοῖς Λακεδαιμονίοις περὶ Λεπρέου.
For they happened to be at variance with the Lacedaemonians concerning Lepreum.
§5.31.2πολέμου γὰρ γενομένου ποτὲ πρὸς Ἀρκάδων τινὰς Λεπρεάταις καὶ Ἠλείων παρακληθέντων ὑπὸ Λεπρεατῶν ἐς ξυμμαχίαν ἐπὶ τῇ ἡμισείᾳ τῆς γῆς καὶ λυσάντων τὸν πόλεμον Ἠλεῖοι τὴν γῆν νεμομένοις αὐτοῖς τοῖς Λεπρεάταις τάλαντον ἔταξαν τῷ Διὶ τῷ Ὀλυμπίῳ ἀποφέρειν.
For when a war had once arisen for the Lepreans against some of the Arcadians, and the Eleans had been called upon by the Lepreans for an alliance on condition of receiving half the land, and had brought the war to an end, the Eleans ordered the Lepreans themselves, who cultivated the land, to pay a talent to Olympian Zeus.
§5.31.3καὶ μέχρι μὲν τοῦ Ἀττικοῦ πολέμου ἀπέφερον, ἔπειτα παυσαμένων διὰ πρόφασιν τοῦ πολέμου οἱ Ἠλεῖοι ἐπηνάγκαζον, οἱ δ’ ἐτράποντο πρὸς τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους.
And they continued to pay it until the Attic war, but when they subsequently stopped on the pretext of the war, the Eleans began to compel them; and they turned to the Lacedaemonians.
καὶ δίκης Λακεδαιμονίοις ἐπιτραπείσης ὑποτοπήσαντες οἱ Ἠλεῖοι μὴ ἴσον ἕξειν ἀνέντες τὴν ἐπιτροπὴν Λερεατῶν τὴν γῆν ἔτεμον.
When the arbitration was referred to the Lacedaemonians, the Eleans, suspecting that they would not receive a fair trial, abandoned the arbitration and ravaged the land of the Lepreans.
§5.31.4οἱ δὲ Λακεδαιμόνιοι οὐδὲν ἧσσον ἐδίκασαν αὐτονόμους εἶναι Λεπρεάτας καὶ ἀδικεῖν Ἠλείους, καὶ ὡς οὐκ ἐμμεινάντων τῇ ἐπιτροπῇ φρουρὰν ὁπλιτῶν ἐσέπεμψαν ἐς Λέπρεον.
But the Lacedaemonians none the less decided that the Lepreans were independent and that the Eleans were in the wrong; and on the ground that they had not abided by the arbitration, they sent a garrison of hoplites into Lepreum.
§5.31.5οἱ δὲ Ἠλεῖοι νομίζοντες πόλιν σφῶν ἀφεστηκυῖαν δέξασθαι τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους καὶ τὴν ξυνθήκην προφέροντες ἐν ᾗ εἴρητο, ἃ ἔχοντες ἐς τὸν Ἀττικὸν πόλεμον καθίσταντό τινες, ταῦτα ἔχοντας καὶ ἐξελθεῖν, ὡς οὐκ ἴσον ἔχοντες ἀφίστανται πρὸς τοὺς Ἀργείους, καὶ τὴν ξυμμαχίαν, ὥσπερ προείρητο, καὶ οὗτοι ἐποιήσαντο.
The Eleans, however, believing that the Lacedaemonians had received a city of theirs which had revolted, and bringing forward the treaty in which it was stated that whatever any parties held when they entered upon the Attic war, they should also have when they came out of it, felt that they were not receiving equal treatment and revolted to the Argives; and they also, as had been said before, made the alliance.
§5.31.6ἐγένοντο δὲ καὶ οἱ Κορίνθιοι εὐθὺς μετ’ ἐκείνους καὶ οἱ ἐπὶ Θρᾴκης Χαλκιδῆς Ἀργείων ξύμμαχοι.
Immediately after them, the Corinthians and the Chalcidians of Thrace also became allies of the Argives.
Βοιωτοὶ δὲ καὶ Μεγαρῆς τὸ αὐτὸ λέγοντες ἡσύχαζον, περιορώμενοι ὑπὸ τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων καὶ νομίζοντες σφίσι τὴν Ἀργείων δημοκρατίαν αὐτοῖς ὀλιγαρχουμένοις ἧσσον ξύμφορον εἶναι τῆς Λακεδαιμονίων πολιτείας.
But the Boeotians and Megarians, while saying the same things, remained quiet, being treated with indulgence by the Lacedaemonians, and thinking that the democracy of the Argives was less advantageous to them, who were under oligarchies, than the constitution of the Lacedaemonians.
