§20.4Στίχ. δ΄. (10) Οὐ ποιήσεις σεαυτῷ εἴδωλον. Ἄλλο εἴδωλον, καὶ ἕτερον ὁμοίωμα.
Verse 4 (10) "You shall not make for yourself an idol." An idol is one thing, and a likeness is another.
Ὁμοίωμα γάρ ἐστιν, ἐὰν ποιῇς ἰχθύος ἢ τετραπόδου, ἢ θηρίου, ἢ διὰ τεχνουργίας ἢ διὰ ζωγραφίας ὁμοίωμα· εἴδωλον δὲ, ὅσα ἀνατυποῦσα ψυχὴ ποιεῖ ἐξ οὐχ ὑπαρχόντων πρωτοτύπως· οἷον, ἀναμεμιγμένον τι ζῶον ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου καὶ ἵππου.
For it is a "likeness," if you make a likeness of a fish or a four-legged animal or a beast, whether through craftsmanship or through painting; but an "idol" is whatever the soul, forming an image, makes from things that do not exist as archetypes; for example, some mixed animal of man and horse.
Στίχ. δ΄ Ὅσα ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἄνω, καὶ ὅσα ἐν τῇ γῇ κάτω. καὶ ὅσα ἐν τοῖς ὕδασιν ὑποκάτω τῆς γῆς.
Verse 4 "Anything that is in heaven above, and anything that is on the earth beneath, and anything that is in the waters under the earth.
Οὐ προσκυνήσεις αὐτοῖς, οὐδὲ μὴ λατρεύσεις αὐτοῖς. Ἄλλο προσκυνεῖν, καὶ ἄλλο λατρεύειν.
You shall not bow down to them, nor shall you serve them." To bow down is one thing, and to serve is another.
Ὁ μὲν γὰρ ἐξ ὅλης ψυχῆς δουλεύων τούτοις οὐ μόνον προσκυνεῖ. ἀλλὰ καὶ λατρεύει· ὁ δὲ καθυποκρινόμενος, καὶ δια τὰ ἔθη ποιῶν, οὐ λατρεύει μὲν, προσκυνεῖ δέ.
For he who serves these from his whole soul not only bows down, but also serves; but he who plays a hypocritical part, and does so on account of customs, does not indeed serve, but bows down.
Εὑρήσεις δὲ τοιούτους ἐν τοῖς Ἀριθμοῖς χαριζομένους γυναιξὶ, καὶ εἴδωλα προσκυνοῦντας.
And you will find such people in Numbers, ingratiating themselves with women, and bowing down to idols.
