The arms of Pharaoh are wickedness in the practice of sin, and the mind of the flesh in the doctrines of impiety; which arms God, as good, shatters; Pharaoh is a symbol of the devil, the ruler of sin among men. —The Lord shatters the arm of sinners, so that they may not be able to lay hold of a sword.

Notes

  1. 30.25εῖαι — A scribal error in the codex. Based on the context and agreement with the plural subject (the two singular nouns ἡ κακία and τὸ φρόνημα connected by καί), it is interpreted as the third-person plural present indicative copula εἰσί (or εἰσίν).
  2. 30.25οὓς βραχίονας — A relative adjective construction where the relative pronoun οὕς incorporates the noun βραχίονας into the relative clause (antecedent attraction).
  3. 30.25ἐπιλαβέσθαι μαχαίρας — The middle infinitive ἐπιλαβέσθαι (aorist of ἐπιλαμβάνομαι, meaning 'to grasp' or 'to lay hold of') takes its object in the genitive case (μαχαίρας).
