§27#3Ἔδοξεν οὖν σφιν, τεσσάρων ἐόντων τειχέων ἐν τῇ νήσῳ, πάντ’ ἐκλείπειν καὶ ἐς τὰ ὄρεα καταφυγοῦσιν ἀτέχεσθαι σωτηρίης.
Therefore, it seemed good to them, since there were four fortified cities on the island, to abandon everything and, having fled to the mountains, to cling to their survival.
Ὅθεν δὴ τί κακὸν οὐκ ἀπήντησε, χώρης λεηλατευομένης καὶ σωμάτων ἐλευθέρων ἀνδραποδιζομένων καὶ κτεινομένων ἐχθρῷ νόμῳ, τῆς δὲ πόλιος καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἐρυμάτων καὶ ἱερῶν καταιθαλουμένων, ἔτι δὲ καὶ τῇ θυγατρὶ τοῦ Λυγδάμιος Ἀρτεμισίῃ κατὰ πατρῶον νεῖκος δοθέντων ἐκσαγηνεῦσαι πάντα ὅσα λοιπὰ ᾖν;
From this indeed, what evil did not meet them, while the land was plundered, free bodies enslaved and killed by the law of the enemy, the city and the other strongholds and temples burned to ashes, and moreover, Lygdamis' daughter Artemisia, in accordance with her father's enmity, was authorized to sweep clean everything that remained?
ἀλλὰ γὰρ, ὡς ἔοικε, θεοῖς οὐκ ἠμελεύμεθα· χειμώνων δὲ γενομένων ἐξαισίων, αἵ τε νῆες τῆς Ἀρτεμισίης ἐκινδύνευσαν ἅπασι ἀπολέσθαι, πολλαὶ δὲ καὶ ἀπώλοντο, ἔς τε τὸ στράτευμα αὐτέης πολλοὶ κεραυνοὶ ἐνέπεσον, σπάνιόν τι τῆς νήσου κεραυνουμένης·
But in fact, as it seems, we were not neglected by the gods; for when extraordinary storms arose, the ships of Artemisia were all in danger of being destroyed, and many indeed perished, and many thunderbolts fell upon her army, though the island is rarely struck by lightning.
λέγεται δὲ καὶ φάσματα ἡρώων τῇ γυναικὶ ὀφθῆναι· ἃ δὴ πάντα φοβηθεῖσα ἀπέστη ἔργων ἀνηκέστων, ὁμολογίην πικρὴν ποιησαμένη, καὶ λίην πικρὴν λέγεσθαι, ὥστε ἀφείσθω.
It is also said that phantoms of heroes appeared to the woman; fearing all these things, she withdrew from irreparable deeds, having made a harsh agreement—and indeed said to be too harsh, so let it be passed over.
Ἀποδώσω δὲ καὶ ἐνταῦθα προγόνοις τοῖς ἐμοϊς κυριότητα οὐ ψευδέα τοῦ μήτ’ ἐφ’ ὑμέας μήτ’ ἐπὶ Αακεδαιμονίους ἢ ἑτέρους ἄλλους Ἑλλήνων Κώους ἑκούσια ὅπλα λαβεῖν, καίπερ πολλῶν τῶν ὁμοῦ νήσους τε καὶ Ἀσίην οἰκεόντων συναψαμένων τοῖς βαρβάροις τοῦ πολέμου οὐ βίῃ·
And here also, I will attribute to my ancestors the true credit for the fact that the Coans did not voluntarily take up arms either against you or against the Lacedaemonians or any other of the Greeks, even though many of those who lived in the neighboring islands and Asia joined the barbarians in the war, and not by force.
οἱ γὰρ προεστῶτες τότε τῆς πόλεως ἦσαν Κάδμος τε καὶ Ἱππόλοχος· ἐπ’ ἀληθεῖ δὲ κεῖται προγόνους ἐμοὺς εἶναι τόν τε Κάδμον καὶ τὸν Ἱππόλοχον·
For the leaders of the city at that time were Cadmus and Hippolochus; and it is established as a truth that Cadmus and Hippolochus are my ancestors.
ὁ μὲν γὰρ Κάδμος, ὃς τὴν βουλὴν αὐτὴν ἤρτυσεν, ἔστι τῆς ἐμῆς μητρὸς, ὁ δ’ Ἱππόλοχος ἐξ Ἀσκληπιαδέων τέταρτος ἀπὸ Νέβρου τοῦ Κρισαίους συγκαθελόντος, ἡμεῖς δ’ Ἀσκληπιάδαι κατ’ ἀνδρογένειαν· ὥστε καὶ τοῦτο τὸ καλὸν τῶν ἡμετέρων προγόνων προελέσθαι.
For Cadmus, who arranged the plan itself, belongs to my mother's family, while Hippolochus was fourth from Nebros, who helped overthrow the Crisaeans, among the Asclepiads, and we are Asclepiads by male descent; so that we may also claim this noble choice of our ancestors.
Ἐπάνειμι δ’ ἐπὶ τὸν Κάδμον· οὗτος γὰρ δὴ ὁ ἀνὴρ οὕτως ἔσπευδε τὰ τῶν Ἑλλήνων καλὰ, ὥστε, ὁκότε ἔληξεν ἡ χώρη πολιορκεομένη ὑπὸ Ἀρτεμισίης, αὐτοῦ καταλιπὼν τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ γενεὴν, ᾤχετο ξὺν τοῖς τὰ αὐτὰ αἱρεομένοις ἐπὶ Σικελίης, ὅπως Γέλωνα καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς κωλύσει φιλίην ξυνθέσθαι κατὰ Ἑλλήνων πρὸς τοὺς βαρβάρους·
But I will return to Cadmus: for this man was so eager for the common good of the Greeks that, when the siege of the land by Artemisia ended, leaving his wife and family here, he departed with those who chose the same course to Sicily, so that he might prevent Gelon and his brothers from concluding a friendship with the barbarians against the Greeks.
διεπρήξατο δὲ καὶ ἄλλα πολλὰ καλὰ ἔργα, ἃ μηκύνειν οὐ πρόσκαιρον.
He also accomplished many other noble deeds, which it is not timely to prolong.
Αἱ μὲν δὴ δημόσιαι καὶ ἡμέων προγόνων ὑπουργίαι ἐς ὑμέας καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους Ἕλληνας, αὗται καὶ τοιαῦται πολλαί· καὶ γὰρ ἐκλείπει ἡ δύναμις τοῦ λόγου.
Indeed, the public services and those of our ancestors toward you and the other Greeks are these and many such; for indeed the power of speech fails.
Ἔρχομαι δ’ ἤδη οὐκ εἰδόσιν εὐεργεσίην Ἱπποκράτους πατρὸς ἐμέο προσέχεσθαι· λέγων δ’ ἂν ἀληθεύοιμι οὕτως· ὁκότε λοιμοῦ ῥέοντος διὰ τῆς βαρβάρου, ἢ ὑπέρκειται Ἰλλυριῶν καὶ Παιόνων, ὁκότε δὴ ἐπὶ ταύτην τὴν χώρην ἧκε τὸ κακὸν, οἱ τούτων τῶν ἐθνέων βασιλῆες κατὰ δόξαν ἰητρικὴν, ἣ ἀληθὴς ἐοῦσα πανταχόθι ἴσχυεν ἔρχεσθαι, κατὰ πατρὸς τοῦ ἐμέο πέμπουσιν ἐπὶ· Θεσσαλίης (ἐκεῖ γὰρ δὴ ὁ ἐμὸς πατὴρ καὶ πρότερον καὶ νῦν οἴκησιν εἶχε), καλέοντες αὐτὸν ἐς ἐπικουρίην, χρυσοῦ τε καὶ ἀργύρου καὶ ἄλλων κτεάνων οὐ μόνον ἔφασαν πέμψειν ἔχειν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀποίσασθαι ὁκόσα ἂν αὐτὸς ἐθέλῃ ἐπαμύναντα.
And I come now to direct your attention to the benefaction of my father Hippocrates, which you do not know; and in speaking, I should speak the truth in this way: when a plague was flowing through the barbarian territory which lies above the Illyrians and Paeonians, and when this evil came upon that land, the kings of these nations, on account of the reputation of his medical art, which being true was powerful enough to go everywhere, sent to my father in Thessaly (for there my father had his dwelling both formerly and now), calling him for assistance, and said they were prepared not only to send gold and silver and other possessions, but also that he could take away as much as he wished if he helped them.
Ὁ δὲ ἐρώτησιν ποιησάμενος ὁκοῖαί τινες ἐν μέρει κινήσιες γίνονται κατά τε καύματα καὶ ἀνέμους καὶ ἀχλύας καὶ τἄλλα ἃ πέφυκε τὰς ἕξιας κινεῖν παρὰ τὸ καθεστηκός· ὁκότε δὴ πάντων μαθήσιας ἀνείλετο, τοὺς μὲν χωρεῖν ἐκέλευσεν ὀπίσω, ἀποφηνάμενος μὴ οἷός τε εἶναι ἐς χώρην τὴν ἐκείνων ἰέναι·
But he made inquiry as to what sort of changes occurred in turn with respect to heats, winds, mists, and other things which are of a nature to disturb bodily constitutions from their established state; when indeed he received information on all these things, he ordered them to go back, declaring that he was not able to go to their land.
ὅκως δὲ εἶχε ταχέως, αὐτὸς μὲν Θεσσαλοῖς ἠρτύετο παραγγέλλειν ὁκοίοις χρὴ τρόποις κακοῦ τοῦ προσιόντος εὐλαβείην ποιέεσθαι, καὶ ξυγγράφων θεραπείην ἐξετίθει περὶ τὰς πόλιας ἐμὲ δὲ ἐπὶ Μακεδονίης ἐξαπέστειλε, βασιλεῦσι γὰρ Ἡρακλειδέων, οἳ ἐκεῖ κατέχουσι, πατρικὴ ξενίὴ ὑπῆρχεν ἡμῖν.
But as quickly as possible, he prepared himself to instruct the Thessalians in what ways they must take precautions against the approaching evil, and published written treatments for the cities, while he dispatched me to Macedonia, since a paternal ties of hospitality existed for us with the kings of the Heraclidae who rule there.
Κᾀγὼ μὲν ᾔειν ἵνα με ὁ πατὴρ ἐκέλευσεν, ἀπὸ Θεσσαλίας, ἀρήξων τοῖς ἐκεῖ· συνετέτακτο δέ μοι ξυμβαλεῖν ἐς πόλιν τὴν ὑμετέρην.
And I went where my father ordered me, from Thessaly, to assist those there; and it had been directed to me to join your city.
Ἀδελφεὸν δὲ τὸν ἐμὸν Δράκοντα ἐκ Παγασέων ὁρμηθέντα πλοῦν ποιέεσθαι ἐφ’ Ἑλλησπόντου ἐκέλευσε, [οὐ] παραπλησίην δοὺς ὑποθήκην ᾗ αὐτὸς ἔπρησσεν· οὐ γὰρ πάντες τόποι τὰ αὐτὰ φέρουσι βοηθήματα, διὰ τὸ μὴ πάντῃ τὰ περιέχοντα ἐξ ἀέρος ὅμοια εἶναι.
But to my brother Dracon, setting out from Pagasae, he ordered to make a voyage to the Hellespont, giving a not similar instruction to that which he himself practiced; for not all places admit the same remedies, due to the fact that the surrounding atmosphere is not everywhere alike.
